Re: The Man of Steel

For the most part Brits are better actors, hands down. There are some fine American actors just like there are good actors all over the world but the British have definitely refined it.
I don't think this is true. Instead, I think you are rewarded for an actor in the U.S. for different reasons than you are rewarded in the UK. There are probably thousands of great dramatic actors here that will never get exposure because no one in this country cares about seeing plays or watching a 3 hour long drama, unless it contains explosions or a cameo by comedian/action star X. Also, I've heard John Cleese say that the British appreciate witty, clever actors in a way that U.S. audiences don't seem to, and that probably plays some role (showing wit and intelligence often translates to range and ability as an actor, IMO). Even a meat head action star like Jason Statham has some depth to him and can pass as a reasonably intelligent character. Can the same be said for Vin Diesel?

Just my observation.

Re: The Man of Steel

As long as they don't ____ up the costume. I actually love the Superman Returns suit, so if it's something similar, I'll be okay. As long as he has the shield, blue suit red cape, yellow belt, red briefs, and boots, I'm good. You can change certain details like the buckle or size of the shield (artists have done it since 1938) but it has to be immediately recognizable. Some of that Tim Burton/Abrams concept art was awful. Burtons was okay for an alternate black suit, but there'd be rioting in the streets with the Abrams designs. I just hope they don't veer off into that direction.

Kind of like how every Batman from Adam West to Bale have the basics that make them recognizable as the same character.

Re: The Man of Steel

Never heard of him -- but I had also never heard of Routh before Returns. Looks the part, I guess. Time will tell.

Whom Did Cavill Beat To Play Superman
By Garth Franklin Sunday January 30th 2011 11:15PM
With Henry Cavill now locked for the role of Superman in the upcoming Zack Snyder-directed and Christopher Nolan-produced reboot, details have begun to emerge about the casting process that lead to that decision.

Heat Vision reports that the British actor was in the top three or four contenders since the first day says one insider. His closest competitor was Matthew Goode ("Watchmen," "Leap Year").

Warners and Nolan auditioned actors in Los Angeles, New York, and London in November and December. The final half dozen candidates included those two along with "White Collar" star Matthew Bomer, "The Social Network" actor Armie Hammer, "True Blood" actor Joe Manganiello, and "The Rite" actor Colin O’Donoghue.

The final decision came down last week with only a handful of executives knowing the ultimate choice. Cavill himself found out mere hours before the press release was issued.

Two of the names have had dealings with Superman before - Bomer and Cavill. When Warners was developing "Superman Returns" it went through several directors including McG and Brett Ratner before ultimately Bryan Singer was set to direct. When McG was to helm, Cavill was his favourite choice while when Ratner was to direct, Bomer was his top choice. Cavill went as far as doing costume tests for the McG version before that incarnation of the project fell apart.

Cavill of course famously just missed out on several key roles aside from that first time as Superman. These include being one of three finalists for James Bond in "Casino Royale" (he was considered too young), he was author Stephenie Meyer's personal favorite to play Edward Cullen in "Twilight" before Robert Pattinson was cast (Cavill was considered too old by the time filming began), fans pushed hard for him to play Cedric Diggory in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (which Robert Pattinson ultimately won), and he was a rumored contender for "Batman Begins" though has since claimed he never screen tested for the part.

Re: The Man of Steel

Bomer has the face but he's not big enough to play Supes. Still bummed that Routh wasn't cast again. Let's hope Cavill can pull it off.

You know...Routh had such a likeness ( in my opinion so dont kill me) to CR..that I am a bit sad that he won't be returning. I wonder what did it to kill him off.

Now the new guy...I just don't know..its sort of the same feeling as when Christian bale first played BAtman...in Begins...it took me a while to like him. I guess only time will tell.

Watch the Tudor! You'll like him! Though he's got only a seconday role in comparison to J Rhys Meyer, and he doesn't talk that much, being more of an 'acting in the shadow" kind of guy, he literally exsudes charisma!

I love Smallville, so I would have liked Welling as Superman (though it was unlikely from the start), and I'm among those (few) who've actually liked Returns very much. Still, I'd have chosen Cavill before Routh!

Re: The Man of Steel

Interesting choice-- but we've already seen that casting is meaningless if the story/writing isn't up to par....

Re: The Man of Steel

some one hot and smart at the same time... oh god not kate bosworth... she had a 5 head and just didnt fit the role what so ever.

i think we all agree someone better than kate bosworth, im just wondering if theres a favorite out there among the fans

Re: The Man of Steel

I hope they change up the suit like the way every superhero movie in the last decade has changed. Design it for the new generation.

I hope they don't. Superman's costume is about as iconic as the character himself. It should never change. I hope they go the similar route as in Superman Returns.

Re: The Man of Steel

Kate Bosworth in Superman Returns was the biggest mistake, she was absolutely horrible, anything better than her is fine with me.

Hire an actor that not everyone has heard of or seen on screen before like Henry Cavill, that way...a Huge project like this would feel fresh and don't know what to expect.
