Whom Did Cavill Beat To Play Superman

With Henry Cavill now locked for the role of Superman in the upcoming Zack Snyder-directed and Christopher Nolan-produced reboot, details have begun to emerge about the casting process that lead to that decision.
Heat Vision reports that the British actor was in the top three or four contenders since the first day says one insider. His closest competitor was Matthew Goode ("Watchmen," "Leap Year").
Warners and Nolan auditioned actors in Los Angeles, New York, and London in November and December. The final half dozen candidates included those two along with "White Collar" star Matthew Bomer, "The Social Network" actor Armie Hammer, "True Blood" actor Joe Manganiello, and "The Rite" actor Colin O’Donoghue.
The final decision came down last week with only a handful of executives knowing the ultimate choice. Cavill himself found out mere hours before the press release was issued.
Two of the names have had dealings with Superman before - Bomer and Cavill. When Warners was developing "Superman Returns" it went through several directors including McG and Brett Ratner before ultimately Bryan Singer was set to direct. When McG was to helm, Cavill was his favourite choice while when Ratner was to direct, Bomer was his top choice. Cavill went as far as doing costume tests for the McG version before that incarnation of the project fell apart.
Cavill of course famously just missed out on several key roles aside from that first time as Superman. These include being one of three finalists for James Bond in "Casino Royale" (he was considered too young), he was author Stephenie Meyer's personal favorite to play Edward Cullen in "Twilight" before Robert Pattinson was cast (Cavill was considered too old by the time filming began), fans pushed hard for him to play Cedric Diggory in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (which Robert Pattinson ultimately won), and he was a rumored contender for "Batman Begins" though has since claimed he never screen tested for the part.
