While the Zod news was already broken, I found this take from SlashFilm interesting

Michael Shannon Is Zod in ‘Superman’, Now Titled ‘Man of Steel’
Posted on Sunday, April 10th, 2011 by Peter Sciretta

Last month, it was rumored that Michael Shannon was in talks to play a villain role in Zack Snyder‘s new Superman: Man of Steel. Today Warner Bros has officially announced that Shannon has signed on to star in the film, as Kryptonian villain Zod.

This is just a couple weeks after Zack Snyder said that Viggo Mortensen is definitely not cast in the film. Latino Review‘s report about Edgar Martinez didn’t know specifically what role he was a possible contender for, so there’s a chance that he could be playing (or in the running) one of Zod’s crew.

We were the first ones to report that Zod was the villain in the new Superman movie, yet a month later Snyder denied that Zod would be the villain saying that “the internet has no idea whats going on.” Looks like we had some idea Zack… We usually avoid the annoying “I toldja so” statements, but it really annoys me when producers and directors try to debunk real information, making us look stupid. The fact of the matter is we had real information on the project.

Shannon joins a cast which includes Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent.

David Goyer has supposedly found an idea to address the character of Superman in modern context. Vulture had previously reported an unconfirmed report that the story will follow Clark Kent, a journalist traveling the world “trying to decide if he should, in fact, even become Superman.”

Official Press Release:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder’s new Superman film, titled “Man of Steel.”

Snyder stated, “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

As General Zod, Shannon will go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Michael Shannon was honored with an Academy Award® nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road,” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Shannon was most recently seen in the award-winning HBO drama series “Boardwalk Empire,” from executive producer Martin Scorsese. He will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics’, “Take Shelter,” from director/writer Jeff Nichols.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

“Man of Steel” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company

They have to do it. It's so hard to keep a movie a secret nowadays, so you cant fault any directors, producers...ect, trying to keep information low key.

This. Though you're being a bit kind to the filmmakers by keeping your list of potentials short.

F Zod right in his stupid face. Awful choice for villain.

Zod will not be pleased with your reply. I suggest you kneel now before it's too late.

Re: The Man of Steel

Why the lack of faith in Zod?

I didn't hear too many people complain when Nolan decided to make the Joker a main player in the Dark Knight and yet when Snyder and friends decides to "resurrect" Zod, everyone goes a little overboard with the Hater-Aid. The list of Bats villains is just as long (if not longer,) and of all of the villains to chose, the Joker still won the writers over. There were plenty of villains with just as much potential and much less showtime.

We all know how that turned out. I think most will agree that TDK will be one of the most talked about superhero movies for years to come, as proof by Ledger's Oscar win.

Zod has always worked (ie. Superman II, Smallville, Supes:TAS, etc.) and will always work, no matter how many times he's reinvented.

So why not Zod?

I'm sure we'll all have a difference of opinion and some won't see eye-to-eye on this, but I think I'm making a valid point here. I'd love to see Brainiac personally, but no way will I scoff at Zod.

So kneel...NOW. :lol

Yes but Batman's other villains have seen screen time as well though. Yes Superman doesn't have as vast as rogues gallery as Batsy, but he does have some heavy hitters. Showcase some of the others before going straight back to ground that's already been covered.
I'm not devaluing Zod's cred as a baddie just saying let's see something new.

But I guess if you're trying to bring Supes back into the film spotlight recreate one of the greatest on screen fight of all time, just take it up a notch. These two are sons of Krypton, there is no need for them to hold back on each other.

I can definitely respect that and appreciate the desire to see something new. :rock As you said, I'm hoping they take it up a notch should we see a Supes/Zod showdown.

Re: The Man of Steel

at the end of the fight if at least one building hasn't been leveled I'm gonna be p***ed

Agreed.

Buildings must fall. Or game over, Snyder. I don't think someone could mess that up as long as they keep in mind the potential of the Yellow Sun and a Kryptonian, BUT....I've been wrong before. :lol

Re: The Man of Steel

People want an action film with fights - who better to fight him than Zod? I welcome the choice - Zod has been done well on the Small screen, but never in a big budget movie. And please no expanding plastic "S"s Mr. Snyder!

Perfect choice for a villain - I wanted a Kryptonian connection and besides the new Brainiac - that leaves Zod. Also ties into Superman's history. If Clark is ignorant of his origins, we can get a semi-origin story but told in retrospect through Zod's distorted glass. Great choice all around.

:exactly:

I think Zod is a great villian for Superman to face off against. I love the casting of Michael Shannon in the role too. We may actually get a decent story and acting to go along with some kick @ss action! :rock

Zod for President!
