Re: OFFICIAL: Marvel Studios Spider-Man

Actually, I'm not sure you couldn't have a black Peter Parker.
He could keep the key elements that make him who he is, just a different race.
That's not possible. You'll end up having some very goofy characters.

Re: OFFICIAL: Marvel Studios Spider-Man

While we're on the subject of race last night's Oscars was certainly an evening of absolutely stunning black women: Zoe Saldana, Kerry Washington, Lupita Nyong'o.

All three very beautiful women indeed. :goodpost: :lecture

Re: OFFICIAL: Marvel Studios Spider-Man

Reading these responses there is an interesting waves from people misunderstanding that using Miles would be somehow race changing Peter Parker to people wanting Peter regardless of race.

Would it bother people more if they used Peter Parker but made him black (ala Johnny Storm) or simply used Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker and just negated Peter altogether?

The divide seems to be strange on this one.

Me personally, I would prefer both used, there is a practical way of them using both not to mention they've already begun space and powers, alternate dimensions is right up Doctor Strange and other characters cosmic but that probably isn't really being weighed out.

You can't have a geeky black kid raised by his aunt, who gets Peter's powers, becomes Spidey, has similar relationships with girls, etc.? We no longer live in a time where someone with X ethnicity would necessarily be any different than someone with Y ethnicity. He doesn't need to be "urban" or whatever to be black.

Re: OFFICIAL: Marvel Studios Spider-Man

I don't get the point of changing Peter's race. If they don't want a European American Spider-Man, then use Miles. Its stupid otherwise.

Re: OFFICIAL: Marvel Studios Spider-Man

Using Miles is "stupid" to my eyes, because that's a nu-Spidey that I don't care anything about, and wasn't the Spidey that everyone liked for 50 years. If they have to make a racial change, it would be better not to create a new character and personality in the process.

And really, if the civil rights movement had been further along by 1963, we would have had several more black, and probably Latino and Asian characters in the Avengers, X-Men, FF, etc. I can't get too hung up on superficial stuff like skin tone, which doesn't need to have any real impact on the character or stories.

If he's going to be exactly the same, then what's the point of changing his color then? The result would be the same "boring character" people are complaining about, except his skin is darker than usual. If you're going to change a character's race or ethnicity, shouldn't that play a role to make it fresh? Otherwise, it's just another Nick Fury. I'm not saying that they should go for a stereotype either.

I think that's part of the issue here, is that when people hear that the character would be a different race they automatically assume that the studios would overlay some sort of stereotypical reach (which Hollywood does a lot actually) but if you take Peter Parker and make him ANY other race, nationality or whatever you'd like to call it but kept the story the exact same it would virtually make no difference. The problem is people are expecting Marvel Studios to not do that, but to try and change the take altogether.

Of all the actors they are looking at for the role, what if a black actor channels Peter Parker the most?

Getting the best actor possible for the movie is always ideal in my opinion.

I think that guy is assuming it will happen because Sony is trying to avoid being labeled as racist. So, I don't think there is any real concern over making something fresh or appealing to a new demographic. But who knows? If they want to make a role fresh, then I'm all for it, but don't do it with Peter ****ing Parker and Spider-Man. We saw how well that worked out with WB and Hopeman. No more, please. There are about 10,000 other Marvel characters to choose from, don't go with the poster boy!

That is possible, and of course, I wouldn't support that at all. Though my impression is that this would be Sony's decision and not Marvel Studios, correct?

Re: OFFICIAL: Marvel Studios Spider-Man

It'd be a combined decision because the character would first appear and lay the groundwork in a Marvel Studios film to be fully fleshed out in a Sony Pictures film.

I agree though best actor, who cares to the race. Give me the awkward, wise-cracking and charming Spidey, the rest will fall into place.

You'd prefer that black Peter Parker AND Miles appear in the same movie? That's weird.

For some reason I immediately thought of Cap in Avengers saying his spiel that ends with "Hulk....smash!" But including him saying "Miles and Black Peter Parker....." :lol

Which is a ridiculous notion. It's not racist to cast white actors as fictional and beloved characters who have always been white. Preaching to the choir I know.

"Sure Cap we'll join The Avengers but first....guess which one is black...hint it's a trick question"
