DC deals in icons that go back millenia and are embedded in the zeitgeist. These archetypes will survive many incarnations, and last many millenia more.

Marvel deals in angst-ridden cry babies. They are but a passing phase.

But Dr. Strange is cool.

Okay, but who would win in a fight? :lol

The funny thing though is whenever you have a "Batman vs. ___someone___" topic, most everyone says that Batman would win because of his gadgets. :lol

Hell, he even died and came back life. NO ONE can beat him for good.
Please, Jean Grey had died and come back so many times she has a corner booth in the afterlife.

From what I'm hearing it kinda sounds like people see DC as the mythos like Dave said about archetypes and someone else compared them to the pantheon of gods; and Marvel as the real life heroes like your Julius Caeser, Alexander the Great, etc.

MARVEL ALL THE FREAKING WAY.
DC comic characters are at alot of times way to 1 deminsional, batman being the only true exception, and you say agnst crybabies well i guess batman would go under that to, or any character that truely is confilicted between his double life and struggles and occasionaly wines about how hard it is, i love the marvel emotion and the grit. Im a huge batman fan, but as a all together company i got to give it up to marvel. The punisher, wolverine, hulk what else could you need.

Ok seriously this is so ridiculous. Were in a marvel section of the forum, so its blooming obvious whose going to win. Besides that all this is turning into is a 'mine bigger than yours' contest with posts stating, DC sucks. There have been some very interesting posts but on a whole, its really one sided. This post was created to stir trouble not disscussion...Shai:lol
"Lets get all the Marvel fans together and beat up the DC fans!"

But anyway, my opinion. DC for me. While Marvel have alot more going on atm, the quality just does compare to the work DC has done of the years. Batman is THE best comic book character ever written, the complexity of the character, the dark and human nature to Gotham and the villains that delves in the deep and dark nature of the human psyche, Rather than just a huge array of baddies with huge crazy powers, the relationships and dynamics between the characters are so well formed. Thats why the dynamic between Batman and the Joker is so beautiful and poetic. The mythology DC uses if brilliant too. Far more believable and compelling in my opinion
Also just look at what all the greatest comic book writers choose to write for, DC & Vertigo. Most of the greatest comics ever created are DC collaborations.
Kingdom Come, Watchmen, Sandman, Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One, The Long Halloween, Blankets, The Killing Joke, V for Vendetta, New Frontier, Hush, We3, It’s a Bird, Superman for All Seasons, Arkham Asylum, When in Rome, Fables, Black and White, Swamp Thing, Crisis of Infinite Earths, Miracleman, The Invisibles, Y: The Last Man to name a afew.

But really when you think of it, people who love a certain comics company love it because they've read more of those comics, or grew up with those characters all their life. There really is no definitive answer as to who is better. Even if its looked at rationally, you cant pick it. Everyone likes things for different reasons and tastes. Just how it goes.

I was about to say it's an "age" thing, but BD is probably 25years younger than me and he makes some fantastic points about DC that I have to agree with.

I grew up with both - I bought DC and Marvel comics with the $3.00 I earned from my paper route (could get 12 comics with that). But Superman, Batman and the Justice League clicked with me in ways that Spiderman, Hulk and the Avengers didn't.

Perhaps I was too young to understand the girlfriend problems of Peter Parker and the more simplisitc moralism of Superman was more comprehensible to my infantile mind.

But now that I only read trades and see large story arcs all at once it seems that currently DC is the one that is more sophisticated. House of M was unbearable, whereas Infinite Crisis raised questions of evil vs. good and larger philosophical questions.

And they share writers between the companies so it's not just the writing that makes the difference, but the history of the characters. Does "Marvels" really compare to "Kingdom Come"? Sure the 2nd Kingdom thingie was pretty contrived and boring in the same way as Earth X was boring. But does Marvel have anything that compares to Watchmen? The Dark Knight Returns? Sandman? New Frontier? If they do please point me the way - I'd love to discover new greatness.

Most of the DC Characters are to smooth and perfect for my taste. I like the edges and problems of the Marvel characters.

Another thing for me is, that the DC guys are too strong. Its ridicolous how strong and mighty they are. Makes it all boring to me. The only interesting guy is Batman. The rest is b0ring.

Marvel definitely has the greater selection of interesting heroes to choose from so if that were my criteria for choosing it would definitely be them. If my choice were based on a single character it would most definitely be DC and Batman, hands down.

My favourite male super hero is Spider-man but my favourite female is Wonder Woman. In general i do prefer Marvel though.

Im more of a vintage Marvel guy.. But the Civil War story line is pretty good as is the Planet Hulk series.

DC has my favorite in Superman, but this picture says it all.

Grew up with DC (and that probably determines what someone likes today 90% of the time).

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Green Lantern(s), Flash, Martian Manhunter, yeah, there'd be a lot o' whoop-ass laid down on some Marvel folks.

I'm not a big comic book reader. Until Civil War this past year I hadn't read a comic book since I was a kid.

Marvel is better to me simply because I like the characters themselves better. Nothing to do with depth of character, integrity or background. The characters themselves visually are just cooler.

As a kid I read Spiderman, Superman and Batman comics. I watched the Batman and Superman TV shows as well as the Spiderman cartoon. Spiderman was always my favorite character. I don't know why and there's no magic reason I can think of. I just liked the character and the villains. I also watched the Justice League and enjoyed it but the Wonder Twins just threw the whole thing off for me. So in reality since I watched more DC than Marvel as a kid you'd think I'd like that series better. But I don't.

Honestly guys, you can't go wrong with either side! The thing I hate about DC is that with Supes, Bat, and the Flash, they should give the license to Sideshow to produce premium format figures like Marvel. I mean they have these iconic heroes and yet the statues that I have seen thus far are horrendous!! I know Sideshow would give these icons there just due if they were allowed to sculpt them. How about a poll or petition to DC to give Sideshow the license to do these heroes??:D

DC believes that the sun rises and sets over at DC Direct since that's their inhouse operation. So far most of their stuff is mediocre or "alright". I hope that Andy and Ray can bring some much needed creativity. That's what's lacking. It does make you appreciate the Gore Group and Sideshow even more when you see the Marvel stuff we get here.
