When did T'Challa even originally become the Black Panther? Did he just carry that flower and suit with him at all times just incase his dad died on the trip?

And if Killmonger had put his plan into action a couple years earlier, does that mean he would have been fighting an old man for the right to rule? Who decided a fistfight was the best method to select a leader for a supposedly modern country?

He was already Black Panther before his father died, since he mentioned already having that role during Civil War. I’m assuming once the king reaches a certain age, he can pass the mantle down.
