Saw it last night as well but this thread has been so much about the reactions to this film or it's place in American society these days that it didn't even seem like this was the place to talk about the movie. I won't speak on what this film means to anyone or any of the propaganda surrounding it, but the film itself was a very good entry into the MCU.
I am thrilled to say that they treated this material seriously. It stands alone just fine on its own and it isn't bogged down by cameos or the Avengers in any way. They knew they had an opportunity here to make a impactful film that actually has a message, which isn't very common in the mcu. Moreover, while a tad preachy at times, the movie isn't very preachy in alienating ways. Black excellence isn't shoved down everyone's throats but you also understand why these people don't want anyone else in. It's more about who we are on the inside and T'Challa's struggle with his new role against tradition. It's more like Lion King in that sense and the theme talks to everyone.
It's a beautifully shot film. It's a magical looking world Coogler and team created. Stunning, and yes the cgi is a little blotchy at times but that really doesn't bother me.
We did get some quality villains this go around. I really loved Michael B Jordan Killmonger and Serkis' Klaw. While I do wish both had more time on the screen, I truly like both of them more in this film than they have been in the comics. Klaw is entertaining, fun and charismatic. Killmonger has such a strong presence on screen. You can tell he enjoyed being the villain.
Boseman delivers again. He's such a likeable addition to the franchise. He is regal himself in his portrayal. I also thought michonne from walking dead, T'Challa's sister Shuri, and M'baku were other standouts.
Now the film isn't perfect but it's top 3-4 MCU for sure imo. I love that it wasn't a jokefest. And when there is humor it's more low-key and grounded, like sibling bickering. Not at the expense of the character like Thor begging someone not to cut his hair or hitting himself with a ball off the glass. The material was taken seriously and this film feels important--but in a personal, soulful way, not in a infinity gauntlet kind of way. There were a couple things I wish they did a little different, I wish the final fight was a little more investing and clearer (it felt like it never felt as personal as it did the first time the cgaracters encountered each other), but I do wish this film was longer because I wasn't ready for it to end--which I haven't said about a movie in a long time.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved what was on screen and want more, I can acknowledge it wasn't a perfect film so I'll give it a 8.5/10
