Re: NECA 1/4 Predator

yup, looks like neca went with the cheap route yet again and molded the plastic in color instead of painting it. i've said this again and again, and i'm sure kyle heard me when i also said to him:

paint the damn figure!

molded color gives the impression of C-H-E-A-P. and i hate that in a collectible. if i can see that, i'm pretty damn sure kyle can see it too. so why would you take all the effort to sculpt something cool and yet cheap out on the last process. why not go all the way? who would mind paying $10-20 more for this, if they can be assured that the paint app is first rate?

molded color looks like crap even on my 7" preds, and now they want to blow it up to 18". good thinking, neca.

I don't think molded color necessarily has to look cheap, it depends on how good the paint apps on top look.

Re: NECA 1/4 Predator

That figure came out in 2008 and is 6" tall and from a different factory.

It's stupid to use it as a comparison to what the 18"+ Predator could look like.

THIS is the sample from the factory:

Heres that pic BTW...

Yeah.. The last thing I thought of when I saw that was "cheap"...

hush! lest you want hot toys and other high end makers to start changing their way of doing things as well.

there's a reason why the best companies paint their pieces and not just mold them in color(except for the parts that are covered and your eyes cant see them). the difference is quite significant. might not look cheap to you, but to me that shiny translucent texture always gives away cheap plasticy feel.

look, i dont care if neca use cheap plastic, which they do, always... but just dont show it so blatantly like it's something to be proud of. just cover it with paint, pretty please. this sculpt deserves it. if you want to cheap out, go cheap out on something else.

Re: NECA 1/4 Predator

:lecture
Exactly.

Besides, the point is, NECA is molding the figure in a base color that is suitable to the character and then they paint over it.
You want simple, molded colors? How about HT's Aliens alien... black plastic with a couple of blue highlights...

Re: NECA 1/4 Predator

But doesn't Hot Toys mold their figure heads, that looks great by the way, in a skin color?
r u sure about that? i seem to remember pic of rows of unpainted hot toys heads in grey, not in skin color. but then again, they could also be unpainted proto heads. i currently have a dozen of ht figs and they never come across to me like the colors are molded in. if they are, then ht certainly fooled me, and i stand corrected.

i guess it depends on the quality of the plastic used then. ht's looks good(if indeed their sculpts are molded in color) while neca always comes across shiny and plasticky whenever they do that. i see it in the neca figs in my collection and i see it in the pic of the 18" pred above.

So when you look at the factory pics of this 14 P1, do you think it looks cheap?

Re: NECA 1/4 Predator

Damn good for $80, and if you're thinking to yourself "well yeah, but..." then that's all there is to it.

Yup, I'm pretty sure HT's sculpts (and DiD's also for that matter) are molded in skin color and then are painted to emphasize details and nuances. Of course, I'm not saying NECA does as good a job as HT or DiD... but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
And I actually like the translucent/shiny quality in the classic pred 7" figure and the pics I've seen of the 18" figure, it reminds me more of the "sheen" the preds have, rather than the dull grey of Berserker, for instance.

At any rate, we'll just have to wait and see.

Re: NECA 1/4 Predator

I typically prefer all surfaces to be painted, however with skin, the plastic has a slight translucency that can make it appear more realistic. Based on the 7" figure, and knowing that the paint apps are supposed to be improved, I'm not expecting to have to do a lot of repainting.

Yeah, I'm hoping a repainting isn't necessary.
Looks good at this point.
I am, however, debating whether or not to put quills on him. Hmmmm......

That's a great idea, I might steal that. What would you use to make the quills?

HT molds all their human heads in "skin" color. Just look inside one of them where the neck socket connects and you'll see the raw color. No gray. The prototype is gray because of the sculpting material. But the finished products are all molded in whatever "skin" color is closest in tone to the subject. They just have great paint aps so it's never an issue of the finished product looking cheap or too plastic/toy-like.
