This whole thing was Blomkamp's idea, no? His idea, he should get to make it. Its the one thing that actually gives me hope about this movie. It wasn't just the studio arbitrarily demanding a new Alien film and hiring anyone whose just looking for a payday.

Really? I find that hard to believe. I'm sure Blomkamp is a fan of the franchise, and I'm sure he wants to direct a great Alien movie, but the idea that he twisted arms to do an Alien movie doesn't make sense (regardless of what's released thru the press). Especially when he's already carved out a sci-fi niche for himself and could easily do his own, unique alien movie?

Well the decision to make the film was only made public after Blomkamp's ideas and artwork were released. The impression I got was that this was a "bottom-up" decision based on what the studio saw from Blomkamp rather than the other way around.

Peter Jackson could have done anything he wanted after LOTR but decided to indulge his inner fanboy and remake his favorite childhood film. Blomkamp could have had a similar thought.

I'm sure he was asked, long ago, and he came up with an idea which, coupled with his 'heat' at the moment, got the studio's attention. The fact that his films haven't done so well AND the Alien franchise immediately gets big press is likely the reason Blomkamp is pursuing this project. What's he going to do to jump to the next level? With Alien, he maintains his newer budget preferences and gets a chnace to make the next great aliens movie. But even if it fails, he's moved up in pay and budget and will likely have his next two pictures greenlit before this Aliens movie even has first cut. It's a smart move for him.

Due to practical effects being a thing of the past and Blomkamp's CGI fillled movies I'm guessing any alien we see in this movie will be full CGI...

There seems to be a generation that doesn't know how to shoot practical effects... or believes them to be too limiting.

Great CGI is simply a matter of money. But directors often just put too many FX shots into their storyboards. If they went more with the suggested or unseen, then they'd have more cash for the money shots.

But not sure if audiences have the patience for the slowburn of suspense these days. I can see a theater lighting up with cellphones if there's too much silence on the screen.

Yeah. I wonder how many of the next generation of movie fans would react to watching the first Alien movie for the first time in cinemas now...

I'm no longer a fan of Blomkamp. I can already see his tech design for this new Alien, and I fully expect a "robot" to look more like Chappie than Ash. Blomkamp has yet to impress me since District 9.

Ditto.

Love D9, and Loved Chappie despite it being a terrible movie :lol

But he's a one trick pony, hopefully this franchise brings out the best in him, it can't be worse than AvP, so there's at least that.

I'd still root for him; I just doubt have faith.

I'd actually like to see Fincher take another crack now. He's become such a better filmmaker since Alien 3.

Nah, the hate bandwagon can't be stopped for him at this point in time.

Alien 3 was a fantastic movie, more so if you take into consideration it was Fincher's 1st big budget film and all the production problems, it's a visual feast, the story is great and the characters are awesome.

He worked wonders with what he was given, in his first big movie, he would kill it now, I have no doubt he would return Alien to its rightful place where Scott failed.

I have no doubt I would be utterly disgusted by them. LOLing at everything.

I don't know, they may be pleasently surprised with a genuine horror movie like Alien. Plenty of kids have short attention spans which is why the gaming industry is dying with the likes of COD and other "press X to win" console games ruling the roost. But I'm sure there are still plenty out there who can appreciate a decent movie when they see it. I watch movies like Alien and Predator regularly because despite their age, they are a breath of fresh air in todays in your face, no subtlety or pacing cgi fests. All that said, there does appear to be more appreciation for practical effects from more and more people these days, it is even a selling point for some movies such as the new Star Wars which is nice, lets see how that goes though, early shots of the Falcon don't quite back it up.

That wasn't his fault though. He actually ended up making a very decent movie despite the odds. Alien 3, the directors cut especially is one of the most underated movies ever made imo.

I'm sure Alien 3 shines now when compared to 20 years of ... well, like you said, in-your-face-stuff. That's one of the reasons I'd love to see Fincher back. Can guarantee that won't happen though. Too bad.
