Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Best CO head paint to date?

I picked my S18 Tom up from FPI Leicester earlier, plenty of them in stock.

It really is an amazing head sculpt! The paint jobs all seem to be excellent too.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

It appears to have the best paint apps of the various Tom Baker heads but I also rate the following as being of similar quality,

1st Doctor ( "An Unearthly Child" version )
2nd Doctor
5th Doctor
The Master ( Anthony Ainley )
The Master ( Roger Delgado )

I should be able to compare them properly soon as I got my dispatch e-mail from FPI today :yess:

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Agreed those are all great sculpts. But check out the tiny flecks of gray in Tom's hair. Superb.

First thing I noticed were the eyebrows which are considerably better than the "Pyramids of Mars" & "Seeds of Doom" versions.

The hair is damn good as well and was possibly the trickiest area to sculpt/paint as by season 18 Tom's hair was nothing like it was in his earlier seasons.

Apparently Forbidden Planet and Character Options are the official sponsors for the Doctor Who Live tour which raises the possibility of some kind of exclusive figure set.

If this happens I forsee a great chance to make a bit of extra cash for Christmas :wink1:

Backstage during season 18,

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Its a great looking figure, glad they hid those horrible question mark 'wings' he had flapping about as collars.
bcm how far away is the live tour? or has it already been?

Oddly enough the question marks are sculpted underneath the stuck down jacket, I saw a pic someone had taken of one they took apart for a custom so they are there, just hidden.

I think the Live tour starts around the 15th, I go on the 26th so I'll be avoiding any news about it. Should be fun :)

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

It looks like a good laugh, i'd would of loved to go to the Prom's they did because despite some of RTD's flaws during his run i think hiring Murray Gold was one of his best descisions.

I'm not a fan of the whole question mark thing, it didnt really make any sense what so-ever. It is a brilliant looking head sculpt though and im looking forward to picking up my Anthony Ainley master soon but im not a lover of the body reuse from the John Simm figure.

When used sparingly I can tolerate Gold's incidental music on the show but the trend with Nu-Who and many modern TV shows is to severely overuse such music or play it too loud so the dialogue can't be heard properly which is annoying.

Should be fun in a live environment though.

That said I think the man should be shot for his butchery of the Who theme in recent years because there's been so much added in terms of background instruments that the main theme is barely recognisable.......the main "diddly dum, diddly dum" bit has been drowned out especially in the series 5 version with that bloody awful intro.

As for the question marks that was JNT's attempt at creating a brand logo which was a decent idea for marketing purposes but not very well executed because it looked bloody stupid though I did like Sly's umbrella.

That was JNT though, the same guy that wanted to update Tom's look by ditching the iconic scarf for series 18 :cuckoo:

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Im in the seemingly minority who enjoys the new series 5 theme, its a big departure from the themes of old but it has a 'bouncy' energy to it that i think somehow suits the 11th doctor and the faster paced episodes.

I have the 11's tardis console on order because i like something to vary my displays with, hoping to find a cheapish 09/10 console to go alongside it. What are the chances of CO doing a classic console room? i have been working on a custom plastic mould to make my own but i think an official one would be awesome.

At the beginning the year I'd have said zero but we've since got 3 different Classic police boxes and figures of Roger Delgado & Anthony Ainley and the line is now firmly targeted towards collectors so I think the chances have improved somewhat.

The first Nu-Who console room playset wasn't a big seller which is likely the reason for the series 5 version lacking all the electronics as CO won't have wanted to risk as much of their budget on something that wasn't guaranteed to sell so if we do get a Classic one it may well be done with a similarly stripped down approach.

Which would be slightly crappy but even one without electronics would be better than nothing..............I can always make the TARDIS noise myself like 11 did in the last series :)

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

I can see CO only making the consoles with a cardboard backdrop for the walls. It could happen.

11's theme has actually grown on me. I like it now. :)

Yeah, that's definitely the likeliest option.

11's theme is another example of what I hate about the modern era in general, it's changed too much from what worked for so long and seems to have been done just for the sake of it.

I do at least like some of what follows that theme though :)

FP/FPI now have the "Rememberance" Daleks on their shelves so I should recieve mine shortly. I might keep the extra Imperial Dalek but I'll resell the others as Classic Daleks usually do well on ebay.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Apparently the Imperial Dalek in the 4-pack has a resculpted plunger so it doesn't match with the one that came with Sly.

Gotta wonder why CO have such a strange attitude to army building.
