Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

I would love to know where I can find free hosting for a massive site with commercial grade monthly traffic. Perhaps you can share a link?

If it were a dead site (as I was implying) it would be quite east. Google maybe? Curious that you edited out the second half of my post though.

But it wouldn't be a dead site. It would be a major reference site with considerable traffic. Why would he be obliged to pay for that?

Yes, because it's based on a false premise. Lyon wanted out, which meant taking contributions to pay for hosting and maintenance would still have been a burden on his time and attention. The option was handing the site off to someone else, but I think it's ridiculous to expect anyone to do something like that after having invested years (and dollars) creating it - especially when it would have continued being associated with him by many people even once it was out of his control. I wouldn't do that. So then we get to the next option, which is to actually sell the thing. You can imagine how that would have gone down with the critics.

Because I am nice: www.archive.org

This doesn't do what you think it does. And can't you just use the Wayback Machine anyway?

It would seem with your right you want to smack S.L. and with your left would bless him. Which is it then? :lol

Lyon came across as a pompous egomaniac in my dealings with him. He seemed underwhelmed by the new series, but I suspect at least part of the reason for his exit was due to feeling less important now that his role as fan shepherd during the wilderness years was unnecessary. There are enough valid reasons to dislike him without fabricating new excuses like the ones in this thread. OG was not as CB described and Lyon is hardly a villain for declining to invest further time or money in his site.

I'm not sure why you're often so keen to have people pick sides.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

All sites have their pros and cons. The OG forum was moderated, which is good or bad depending on your perspective. Personally I don't have a problem with fair moderation as it tends to keep the maniacs at bay. It was heavily biased toward the new series and had a tendency to root out false spoilers, which means if you vocalized your dislike of the new series or enjoyed spreading false rumors you probably wouldn't enjoy your stay.

But on balance it was probably the fairest and sanest Doctor Who community around. I say this despite disliking Lyon and many of his moderators.

It's worth remembering the official BBC forum was shut down because the British fans it attracted - many of them new to fandom at the time - were far more egregious than anything that came out of OG.

The bias towards Nu-Who was what I was wondering about. There seems to be a lot of that at Outpost Who as well and naturally I've burst a few bubbles for people who seem content to believe that everyone loves the current era :D

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Because in a discussion its nice to know where people stand on the issue at hand (though this is a thread about the toys, so I am not so sure how we got on this ultimately useless tangent)....

Take a gander at this: https://web.archive.org/web/20040610030255/p078.ezboard.com/bsideshowfreaks

The old freaks site. Nice and archived. Available to all. Free of charge. It does exactly what I want it to. Some threads aren't there, but that is because they were imported here.

Looks nicely done and something like that would have been a nice thank you to all the people that supported OG over the years.

Back on topic if Character Options do decide to expand their character choices what would be the top 5 you'd like for each Doctor?

Here's mine from my favorite eras

2nd Doctor
1.Jamie
2.Zoe
3.Yeti
4.Ice Warrior
5.Ice Lord

3rd Doctor
1.The Master
2.The Brigadier
3.Jo Grant
4.Silurian
5.Omega

4th Doctor
1.Sarah Jane Smith
2.Davros
3.Morbius Monster
4.The Master from "The Deadly Assassin"
5.Romana II from "Destiny of the Daleks"

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

Nice choices and it's actually made me realise there's more 5th Doctor figures I'd be into beyond "Earthshock" Cybermen.

Does the Hartnell story with the Sensorites still exist in any form?

But my opinion of Lyon as a person isn't germane to the question of whether the claims about him made here are fair or true. I know the "sides" mentality afflicts forums everywhere (for example there was little middle ground on the DWF for people like me who thought the new series was just okay) but I can dislike someone while still defending them from unfair accusations.

I know this is the Internet, but it's ridiculous how much the "sides" thing has seeped into the discussion of basic factual issues. The production team didn't claim Doctor Who was a huge hit at the SDCC panel. Eddie has a notorious reputation for making things up and pretending to be an insider. Arnold Blumberg is not evil. It's impossible to highlight the facts without getting into whether grown men have to choose between siding with Lyon or against him. That's absurd.

The old freaks site. Nice and archived. Available to all. Free of charge.

Did the owner of SSF create that or is it part of the Archive.org mission to independently archive the Web?

Might be worth looking into then as I've seen precisely 2 Hartnell stories so far ( "Dalek Invasion of Earth" & "The Time Meddler" ) and thought they were OK.

Hopefully my 2nd Doctor will materialise in the next day or so then I can take some pics over the weekend.

There's a bit of wasteground a few minutes from my house that would pass for a Classic Who "Alien planet that looks suspiciously like a quarry" :lol

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

You might wanna add The Aztecs to that list too... This is the first story I felt William Hartnell started to really get into the character.

Not evil, just nasty. A pompous, conceited bully. And no, I've never been banned by him, although I've answered back a few times.

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

The latest rumor is that there will be an 11 Doctors TARDIS box set which will be released early in 2010. Seven will be based on Ghost light (sans hat and umbrella) and Eight will be based on the TV movie (of course) with a carded Seven being released later with cream colored jacket, hat and umbrella.

Anyone biting this?

If that's true, I will hold off getting any of the classic Doctor figures till then. That would be great...:banana

Re: New Doctor Who Figures?

I would only get it for McGann since I would prefer the Seven with hat and umbrella.

Due to not wanting figures of 10 or 11 and being fairly indifferent about McGann I wouldn't buy the box set unless the 4th Doctor included was an all new version but I'd buy the single carded 7th Doctor without question.

I've also heard a rumor suggesting another 3rd Doctor set will include a giant maggot from "The Green Death" which would be a decent addition to the lineup of monsters.
