Thanks, guys! Yeah, I'm definately very happy with this one. Here's an interesting (or maybe boring?) story...
I've noticed that most of my sculpts, while fairly solid in the likeness, seem a bit cartoon-ish. I recently sent a few of my heads and the skull I had been using as an armature to a friend, a doctor who's working his way into a cosmetic surgery practice. He pointed out that the skull I had (took it from some model kit) was really off in its proportions. The entire face from the eyes down stuck out way too far. He compared it to a chipm skull
He said this was causing everyones' eyes to be set way too far back into the face and that's where I was getting that cartoon/chimp factor. I modified the skull to his specs, and bingo. I've only done a handfull of heads on the new skull, but the difference is immediate and obvious. I think that's why I almost scrapped the head. I've done nearly two dozen Ford sculpts, trying to get the one I wanted. After doing that many cartoon chimp versions, a head done correctly didn't look right to me at first
It turns out I'm not a bad sculptor, I'm just a terrible judge of skulls. Boring info probably, but maybe useful to aspiring sculptors.
I'm glad you guys like this head. I certainly do. Yes, the eyes are a bit smaller. You'll notice that ford has that pronounced brow that actually extends down and overlaps the outside corner of the lower eyelid. I lowered his brow a bit and brought that corner in tighter, hence the smaller eyes. It actually looks better in person. I couldn't get rid of those harsh shadows in his eyes. Kinda looks like someone wearing a Harrison Ford mask
That's what I get for holding it directly under a desk lamp AND using the flash, I guess. The last photo (with half the face in shadow) is the best representation of the how the eyes really look.
