I think the number of bible-thumping, redneck NFL fans plays a role (please note that I'm not saying anything negative about bible-thumpers or rednecks here, it's just that those people like Tebow).
I'm sure the fact that college football is so huge in this country, and that he was one of the great all-time college players also plays a significant role.
Personally, I don't know why anyone would expect much out of him, but to each their own.
As for Ricky, maybe I come off as insensitive about mental illness, but I used to work at an in-patient adult psychiatric unit. I started with the best of intentions--wanted to learn hands-on on the way to becoming a clinical psychologist. But ultimately, I just got bitter about the whole thing. A bunch of whiny, needy people constantly going out and coming back in when they stopped taking their meds. Too many people are just too lazy and needy to deal with their issues on their own, and like to make a big scene of it. I guess I always figured Ricky to be that way. Fairly or unfairly. And I know that some people have genuine psychological issues that make normal functioning difficult if not impossible. But stuff like being afraid of social situations and feeling too emotional? I think those people just need to get over it.
