I LOVED that game. I grew up watching the smashmouth NFC East of the late 80's / early 90's and I loved Parcells' Giants team. The Giants couldn't find the end zone, but they found a way to win. Besides the aforementioned Craig fumble, you had Matt Bahr hitting five FGs, including the game winner, LB Gary Reasons as the upback on a fake punt taking it for a first down and pointing at the Niners' punt returner (that was Craig, too, wasn't it?) and DE Leonard Marshall absolutely CRUSHING Montana on a blindside hit. That game and the subsequent Superbowl victory over the Bills are my indelible childhood football memories.

Sorry it's a bad memory for you. :)

Every team has crushing losses... That one just came at a point where I just thought we couldn't lose... I'm sure Pats fans can relate as winning three SBs in a row would be comparable to going undefeated. Too bad close doesn’t count. :lol

Look up the 1998 Minnesota Vikings. We were 15-1 and scored the most points in NFL history to that point (556) with some rookie called Randy Moss. We were the self-appointed "Chosen Ones."

There were many folks in the Twin Cities who had already booked their hotel reservations in Miami for the Super Bowl prior to the NFC Championship game. It was a foregone conclusion that we would win.

We were beating everyone by at least 20 points except the lone loss to Tampa Bay. The Vikings juggernaut couldn't be stopped and we had a ball hawking defense to boot.

Funny thing happened though. We met something called the Atlanta Falcons and lost 30-27 in OT which is still considered one of the best NFC Championship games ever played. They still play that game every other month on the NFL Network. I've never watched a replay of that game yet the details are still fresh in my memory 13 years later.

~We were double digit favorites to win that game at home.

~Gary Anderson had made all his FG attempts and extra points that season. He was perfect. He then missed a FG late in the game that would have sealed the victory.

~There were grown men leaving that stadium seen blubbering after that loss.

~Me personally, I just went to my bedroom and stared at the ceiling for two hours.....with the lights on.

~The worst part was I had to drop my brother off at the airport a couple hours later and there were Falcon fans dancing the "Dirty Bird" at the baggage claim section.:monkey4

BTW, that 2000 NFC Championship game was absolutely shameful (41-0 loss). I watched it with a good buddy and I left at halftime. We didn't speak again for 8 months.:lol

We lost to the Falcons in the divisional round that year. Garrison Hearst had a horrendous looking broken ankle early in the game... :(

I'm sure the Vikings would have gave the Broncos a run for their money in the SB. The Falcons were easy pickings.

I am looking for the article again now, but I can't find it. A buddy at work who is from San Diego and is a big Chargers fan showed me an article just before we left work that Cowher was talking to the Chargers' owners.

i always heard that Cowher would never go to a team that wouldnt give him full GM powers. so that means A.J. Smith would go too right?

It seems to me that it would be a must.

But since I can't find that article anymore, I am starting to wonder if it wasn't just some embelishment of the rumors the the Post-Gazette is reporting.

Edit - Nobody tell Darth Snoopy.:)
