This may shock you too, but from what I've seen thus far this year I would trade Malkin before Staal. Staal will be one of the top 2 way centers in the league for a long long time. Yes, Malkin is a superstar but he will always be in Crosby's shadow. 8.7M cap hit. You trade Malkin for for a top flight winger, possibly another top 6 forward and/or top 4 dman and some picks and you got yourself a pretty solid club even without Malkin. For me Malkin just hasn't been the same this year. I'm not seeing the same explosiveness, lots of puck management issues and so on.
You have to think both he and Crosby signed 8.7M contracts for 5 years. What happens when they expire? You think they will want a raise? Will they be able to keep both and have some decent talent flanking them?? I trust in Shero, he's done a great job so far, but man we will have some future cap problems that are going to need addressed.
I would like to see what Staal can do with an increased role and see if he can come close to what Geno can do and then make the decision. Id hate to trade away a future Selke winner to be honest.
There are flaws and strengths to your argument.
Strengths: Malkin would give us MUCH more return value than Staal and give us depth in areas where we need help.
Flaws: We give up arguably one of the top 3 hockey players in the world, and while you may think he's having an off year, he's still on pace for 95 points as a 23-year-old. If that's an off year, then I say we're doing very well to have a guy who's off year = 95 points in today's day and age when even 95 point scorers are far and few between. Shadow? Malkin has outscored Crosby from January of 07 to June of 09. Who won the Art Ross last season? Who won the Conn Smyth? I agree, Crosby is better, but it's not far.
There's a song that goes around, "Two out of Three ain't bad." by one Mr. Meat Loaf. The fact we have in our possession two of the three best hockey talents in the world, gets me all giddy inside. So that maybe a ridiculous notion to separate such a tandem. Also, why deal a guy who has been abysmal by his standards, and the standards of the big 3 for what is essentially 40 games of this season, because the other 15, the last 15 he has been exceptional! 40 games does not make a career, a Calder winning rookie season, a 47 goal, 106 point sophomore campaign (good for 2nd behind Ovechkin who only had 6 more points), 113 points good for an Art Ross last season, and a Conn Smyth in the NHL playoffs, and one of the reasons why we won our first Stanley Cup since 92' makes that notion even more ridiculous.
I say we go with dealing Staal over dealing Malkin.
You don't trade away the best player in the deal, you trade for the best player in the deal. Or you get some ridiculous offer like the one Quebec received from Philadelphia when they traded Lindros. At the time they (Quebec/Colorado) traded away the best player, but one of those prospects they got ended up being Peter Forsberg (who ended up being the best player in the deal), amongst the other bevy of solid players they got in that deal.
So unless we get a trade similar to that one with that kind of talent coming back, I say HECK NO to trading Malkin over Staal!
