From what I read, with his pretty low cap hit 1.75M and he's seems to be a decent PK'r we got a good deal for a 2nd rounder. Especially considering it will be the tail end of the 2nd round.

It seems that 2nd rounders are the going rate for young'ish depth dmen right now, as Grebeshkov went for a 2nd to Nashville.

So I guess we got a decent deal. That's going with the idea he plays well for us.

This may shock you, but I actually want Staal to be traded for yes, another winger. I love our strength down the middle. But why stunt a guy's growth who's natural position is at center, where he'll never be anything more than a third liner here, who has good to great upside. You don't take guys 2nd overall to play on your third line. Well, Staal has been a constant on the 3rd line since his rookie year. It's about time that changes! 4 years at 3rd line is putting his development at a stall! Get it? Get it?! We need better scoring wingers and linemates for our two big young superstars.

BLASPHEMY!!! :)

I agree, as much as he is one of my faves, I think we can get alot for him, might be time to go :(

You know what the Habs got for a 2nd rounder...Dominic Moore...

I never understood why we kept J Staal, other then because of his pedigree/namesake. I say trade something you have in spades for a position where you're lacking. The experiment of trying Staal on the wing of Crosby and/or Malkin never seems to get going. Maybe they aren't giving those lines long enough to gel, but either make Staal a permanent winger on the top six, or trade him for a solid winger that is close to his age. Someone who can feed off a Crosby or Malkin, and even elevate their games. Right now our wingers are holding back our big guns.

This may shock you too, but from what I've seen thus far this year I would trade Malkin before Staal. Staal will be one of the top 2 way centers in the league for a long long time. Yes, Malkin is a superstar but he will always be in Crosby's shadow. 8.7M cap hit. You trade Malkin for for a top flight winger, possibly another top 6 forward and/or top 4 dman and some picks and you got yourself a pretty solid club even without Malkin. For me Malkin just hasn't been the same this year. I'm not seeing the same explosiveness, lots of puck management issues and so on.

You have to think both he and Crosby signed 8.7M contracts for 5 years. What happens when they expire? You think they will want a raise? Will they be able to keep both and have some decent talent flanking them?? I trust in Shero, he's done a great job so far, but man we will have some future cap problems that are going to need addressed.

I would like to see what Staal can do with an increased role and see if he can come close to what Geno can do and then make the decision. Id hate to trade away a future Selke winner to be honest.

There are flaws and strengths to your argument.

Strengths: Malkin would give us MUCH more return value than Staal and give us depth in areas where we need help.

Flaws: We give up arguably one of the top 3 hockey players in the world, and while you may think he's having an off year, he's still on pace for 95 points as a 23-year-old. If that's an off year, then I say we're doing very well to have a guy who's off year = 95 points in today's day and age when even 95 point scorers are far and few between. Shadow? Malkin has outscored Crosby from January of 07 to June of 09. Who won the Art Ross last season? Who won the Conn Smyth? I agree, Crosby is better, but it's not far.

There's a song that goes around, "Two out of Three ain't bad." by one Mr. Meat Loaf. The fact we have in our possession two of the three best hockey talents in the world, gets me all giddy inside. So that maybe a ridiculous notion to separate such a tandem. Also, why deal a guy who has been abysmal by his standards, and the standards of the big 3 for what is essentially 40 games of this season, because the other 15, the last 15 he has been exceptional! 40 games does not make a career, a Calder winning rookie season, a 47 goal, 106 point sophomore campaign (good for 2nd behind Ovechkin who only had 6 more points), 113 points good for an Art Ross last season, and a Conn Smyth in the NHL playoffs, and one of the reasons why we won our first Stanley Cup since 92' makes that notion even more ridiculous.

I say we go with dealing Staal over dealing Malkin.

You don't trade away the best player in the deal, you trade for the best player in the deal. Or you get some ridiculous offer like the one Quebec received from Philadelphia when they traded Lindros. At the time they (Quebec/Colorado) traded away the best player, but one of those prospects they got ended up being Peter Forsberg (who ended up being the best player in the deal), amongst the other bevy of solid players they got in that deal.

So unless we get a trade similar to that one with that kind of talent coming back, I say HECK NO to trading Malkin over Staal!

That's what I was trying to say providing we got a top flight winger ala Nash + rape the rest of their lineup or like doughty + kopitar + a 1st. You do it. Your addressing needs and saving cap space in the process.

Don't get me wrong I see what your saying too. I just don't know what we would get in return for someone that really hasn't been able to prove how good he can be.

Toronto is looking to move Kaberle, thought he would be a nice replacement for Gonchar, if we cant keep him

I would love a Nathan Horton for a Jordan Staal type of trade. But would Florida do it? Would we even do it? I think Horton is close to being a top NHL producer, on an other wise average NHL team. But Staal has been an iron man, where as Horton has a history of injuries. I wouldn't say he's necessarily injury prone, as the guy has played back-to-back 82 game seasons, but you would be moving a safe bet (Staal) for a low-high risk for high reward player. I just love Horton's game and think he would compliment Sid's game accordingly.

But I suppose that is all wishful thinking for now, and something that may not seem as good on paper as I may envision.

Point is we need some solid wingers if we want to win another Cup. Yes we won a Cup with what we had, but with teams like Chicago and Washington only getting better, I think it will be quite difficult to repeat as Champs if we don't shore up our problem areas. Our problem areas have actually been a problem to our strength, our star studded cast down the middle.

Chris Chelios has to be the best American born hockey player ever.

Most games played by an American. Most playoff appearances by any player in the NHL. NHL record 24 Stanley Cup appearances over a hockey career that has spanned 25 seasons.

Multiple Stanley Cups

3 Norris Trophies

Multiple All-Star selections

Active leader in career PIMs.

Second oldest player (48) to Gordie Howe's 52 to play in the NHL.

4th overall in SHGs among NHL dmen, trailing only Paul Coffey, Bobby Orr, and Mark Howe.

Simply you can not dispute this! He is Mr. USA Hockey!

You know who the Leafs should trade.. Ron Wilson

I hate that smug prick, he goes on in his pre game interview today saying how Canada through Martin Brodeur under the bus, man STFU. Stop trying to take the focus off the fact the Leafs suck so bad.

Then he starts whining about the referee interfering in the play, get this douche bag a kleenex. This is why Leafs fans get beat up in Mtl :)

Leafs are ____..i miss Team Canada now..badly. lol!

I kept it on the Philly vs Tampa game for most of the time, its the better game on.
