Really glad to see that Bieksa will remain with the Canucks the next several years, less excited that Ehrhoff and Salo will still be with the club. I'm sure Luongo remain the man between the pipes, no way he's going anywhere with the contract he has... but what a shame. Too bad they couldn't buy out his deal or something and send him packing elsewhere.

On the bright side though, the Canucks should be able to get something worthwhile for Schneider when the time comes.

Off-season and now after the celebrating I've gotten to reading a few hockey books.

Deceptions and Doublecross: How the NHL Conquered Hockey - 6/10 - This would seem like it'd be pretty interesting and it was at times, but the authors' styles were very dry. At times it seemed like I was reading a text book.

The Great Expansion: The Ultimate Risk that Changed the NHL Forever 8/10 - Fun, quick read that took only a few hours. Some of the stories are pretty funny. I had never heard about the Penguins buying a live penguin to teach it how to skate only for the poor thing to die of pneumonia.

Next up is The Boys of Winter about the 1980 US hockey team. Are there any other good ones you guys could recommend?

Brooks liach signed for 6 years at 4.5 mill a year, it amazes me how over paid some people are He had 16 goals last year wow!!! Its getting sad!
You think that's bad? Take a look at Chris freakin Drury's contract and output! :monkey4

5 years, $35.25millon and he scored ONE ******* GOAL the entire year! And he had a whopping 5 assists! The year before he netted 14 goals, and 18 assists! :monkey4

Get this bum outta New York PLEASE! :monkey4

It was a good move by the Caps, they overpaid but thats the nature of the market. The fact is they need him and other players like him if they wanna win. Brooks is a solid character guy.

You should also read Rebel League about the WHA

You really think Steve Yzerman will let go of his best franchise player? He's only 20, turning 21 this year, and he's already a top goal scorer in this league.

Keep dreaming Flyer fans.

It's happened and get over his lack of production. Chris Drury is not the first or last to be signed to a ridiculous contract. It happens a lot. I can bring up examples, but I don't have all week. That's how long it would take to mention all the players who were signed to very insane deals. Chris Gratton was front loaded with a 13 million season salary. Alexandre Daigle made 3 million per season before he even stepped on the ice. Stephane Quintal made 4 million being a No. 6-7 dman. Heck, look no further than Rick DiPietro's contract of 15 years at 65 million. Guy plays 5-15 games per season and still collects 5 million US annually. Or Ilya Kovalchuk's big honking 102 million US deal over 15 years or 17.. forget what it is. How did he respond? Well for starters, the Devils didn't make the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. He responded with 32 goals, 56 points, and a -26 rating. So yeah, boohoo to Chris Drury's contract. It happens!

Kovalchuk had I believe 62 points and came alive during the second half and the Devils almost got into the playoffs and had a stretch run of like 24-3 in the second half. It's not all Kovy's fault we missed the playoffs, we were without the services of arguably our best player(Parise), had almost an entirely different defensive core(Tallinder, Volchenkov, Fayne) and a new rookie coach who had no idea what was going on. So there's a number of things.
I mean if you want to talk contracts how about paying out 9.8 million on two players each.

Most recent new on Stamkos/Philly rumors:

PHI OFFER SHEET UPDATE:

NHL LIVE and multiple Twitter Sources reporting Flyers Organization has announced that they will not be making an OFFER SHEET for Stamkos.

Flyers will NOT submit an offer sheet on Stamkos. It's over. More coming...

Stephane Quintal made 4 million being a No. 6-7 dman.

Quintal is a reminder about Harry Sinden and his growing incompetence as a GM going into the late 80s. Quintal was drafted #14 overall, followed by #15 future HOF Joe Sakic.:doh

He did prove sort of valuable in being a part of the Adam Oates (who should've been voted into the HOF this year) deal further down the line.
