Yeah, it's looking that way. We're already mid-way through November. If they don't get things figured out within the next week or two, I don't see the point in leading us, the fans, media, and public on like this. Just scrap the year.

Mark Recchi quoted as saying....

https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=409406

Almost two years removed from a storied playing career, Mark Recchi has some words of wisdom for both the NHL and NHL Players' Association as the lockout approaches Day 60.

"My advice," Recchi told Kevin Paul Dupont of The Boston Globe, "is that the longer it goes, the worse (the offer) is going to get (for the players)."

Recchi, 44, won three Stanley Cups and amassed 1,533 points over 22 NHL seasons - a career that was also marked by a 10-day player strike in 1992 and lockouts in 1994-95 and 2004-05.

"As far as the lockout goes and everything, I'm glad I'm not involved, not playing," he told The Globe.

As part owner of the WHL's Kamloops Blazers - his former junior team in his hometown - Recchi also understands the wants and needs at each side of the bargaining table. "Hey, I'm an owner, too, so I see both sides," he told The Globe. "We lose money on our team, and obviously that's not the same, the money's not nearly as significant as in the NHL, but the business dynamics are similar. We've lost money every year we've owned it."

And with no talks planned between the NHL and NHLPA as of Tuesday morning, Recchi believes the league's offers are going to get worse and that a deal has to be reached now.

"The longer they're out, the revenues are going to go down and down," he told The Boston Globe. "Corporate sponsors aren't going to be lining up...so there goes that money. The schedule isn't going to be 82 games, I don't think, at this point. That's more money lost. So, how are you going to get a better deal? Personally, I think the best time is now."

Recchi also told The Globe he believes the elements of a CBA agreement - stemming from the league's offer made in October - are on the table and that the players will come out with the benefits. "There's definitely a deal there," he told Kevin Paul Dupont. "Obviously, it has to be fitted. But okay, get it right, then sign the thing for 10 years, get back to playing and don't worry about it anymore. You don't want to go through this again in five or six years.

"But look what happened, the players always get their money. They're always going to get paid, no matter what. Look at that last deal. We ended up with the cap and everyone thought it was a bad deal. But it ended up great, right? No matter what the system is, or has been, the players get their money. No matter what the contract, the owners always find a way to pay them more. That's why I say, get a deal and get back in there...the money's always there."

Recchi also expressed his shock regarding the news three years ago that the players fired then-executive director Paul Kelly.

"A dark time," Recchi told The Globe. "And it has been frustrating to see how it's played out, obviously. If Paul had stayed on the job, I don't think you would have seen this happen. The two sides would have started talking long before, maybe a year sooner (in 2011), and not with two or three months to go before (the CBA) expired. There would have been something in place, absolutely. And now here they are, trying to get to 50 per cent and also trying to make everyone whole. Well, you know, with the escrow we paid, I know I wasn't made whole over the last few years I played. That's just the way it was and we accepted it."

Files from The Boston Globe were used for this report.

I'm guess I'm glad I was able to see the Bruins win a Stanley Cup before they dug themselves a hole they may never get out of.

Explain that? Taking a year off doesn't exactly help the Bruins either. Their best defenseman and captain (who is arguably their best player) will be one year closer to retirement and will most likely lose a step from missing a year of NHL action. It was important we had an NHL season because the Bruins (IMO) are still a top team. Even without Tim Thomas. They have strong goalie depth. Subban just added to the mix, will make Timmy an after thought, sooner rather than later. Not bad considering TT is a two-time Vezina and Conn Smythe winner.

Exactly, and I know the owners are billionaires, but does the Columbus owner really think no season is going to help his cause??

No one is going to give a **** about at least 8 teams in the NHL if the season is lost

I just dont get it.

The Canadian owners should break apart and start their own league, like the CFL

Speaking of whihc, im heading to loserville next Sunday for the Gray Cup, only live sporting event Ive seen in months :(

I'm saying I'm glad I saw them win it before the league crumbled and faded away. I didn't mean the Bruins dug themselves a hole, I meant the league as a whole. If the season is lost, and it's looking that way, I don't see how they recover.

it took the MLB years to recover from the strike in '94...and that was just one strike. who knows what 2 recent strikes will do to the NHL

And the only reason MLB recovered was due to the Sosa/McGwire HR duel of '98.

I'm banking on the Seguin/Stamkos duel to 93 goals to save hockey in '13.:lol

Recchi was right when he said this wouldn't be happening if they hadn't ousted Kelly. The players had to know what they were getting into when Fehr was hired.

Yep, Recchi is right on so many levels. If they give in next year this was all a waste.

Ian White didn't do the players any favors today... The players are looking far more desperate than the owners all the time. My thinking is that the Owners will ultiumately get everything they want. I imagine the top 10% paid players (which is what this strike is entirelly about IMO) will soon have bullseyes on their foreheads.

LINK! I want to read what Ian White said... now I have to search for it! Damn you half assing this **** risingstar! Should be called partially rising star... not even that really! :nana: hehe

Edit: Found! I especially love the last (bolded part) of the article. Touché! Nicely done writer. :)

No, seriously Detroit Red Wings defenseman Ian White, tell us how you really feel about NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
Via MLive.com:
"I got to be honest, I personally think he's an idiot,'' White said of Bettman. "Since he's come in I think he's done nothing but damage the game."
Well that'll increase the candor and good vibes that have led to negotiations potentially reaching a two-week freeze.
More White, from the Freep:
"If you think of all the moves he's made," White said, "teams that are all struggling seem to be the teams that he put in places where there's not viable markets for hockey. Three work stoppages -- I don't know if he's in control of the owners or what he's saying, but I think it's only seven of the owners that have to agree on something to have something pass. You'd think it'd be at least 50%. It just doesn't seem like they're running a democratic process, if you will."
White has been candid critic of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman during the lockout.
When the Winter Classic was canceled, White felt it was a harbinger of doom that could lead to the cancellation of the full season. Via the Windsor Star:
"So if he's willing to throw away that game, then the balance of the season, I would think, is definitely on the line. So it's terrible if that's what's going through his mind."
Expect White to receive mega-kudos from NHLPA backers in the media and Bettman bashers among hockey fans. Maybe even some high-fives from his NHLPA peers who don't have the stomach to be this candid with their thoughts.
Our question: If Bettman's an idiot, what does that say about the man who helped hire him? You know, the one that cuts Ian White and the Red Wings a check? That pizza guy?

I just went to TSN.ca and there it was. This sort of news wasn't tough to find!
It's not like anything else is going on in the NHL... lol.

I wonder if Ian White will be fined or something once the new CBA kicks in....

This is a brilliant article by Bill Simmons on why Gary Bettman needs to step down for wrecking this league. Here's a sample....

"Wasn't the league supposed to be regaining control of its broken salary structure? How are we back here seven years later battling the exact same problem?"

"For that and that alone, Gary Bettman needs to step down. No, we can't impeach him. Yes, we can continue to excoriate him. He's the worst commissioner in sports history, and really, it's going to remain that way unless Roger Goodell extends the NFL's season to 20 games, adds Wednesday- and Friday-night football to the schedule, pays a hitman to murder Jonathan Vilma, and gets outed for having a heated affair with his biographer, Peter King … and even then, I'd probably still give the edge to Bettman." :lol
