Sadly the two men who are now are responsible for this mess continuing are a former NBA and MLB employee. lol Two guys who messed up those leagues are now messing up our sport... dammit, almost makes you think that NHL people (owners and players) are stupid. lol

Oh wait, we're in this car****le because of the owners and players. lol

Players will table a offer tomorrow, then the season will be cancelled when teh players wont make concessions on getting this years full salary, bye NHL

The players will cave before the NHL is cancelled. Both owners and players are to be blame for this. I actually think Fehr is also a major problem here. I don't know what kind a message he is telling the players to stay united but it will not work. They have more to lose then the owners.

From Patrick Reusse of Star Tribune sports....

"Craig Leipold, the Wild owner committed $197 million to give 13-year contracts to free agents Ryan Suter and Zach Parise on July 4. A couple of days later he was sitting at a table to set the stage for negotiations, insisting there had to be a limit on the number of years in these ridiculous NHL contracts."

:lol:lol

LOL That is funny! It shows the ridiculous nature of the league and its current state. Having said that, I also sympathize with an owner like Craig Liepold. He is an owner that felt forced to make those signings, because of what the market had become. To be a big player and set up your team as one, you have to do what's necessary. I get that it's a contradiction, but he has a surplus of high-end prospects that are NHL-ready in a year or two in your Grandlunds, Coles, Phillips', Dumbas', and Brodins. With the talent they have now, locking those two up (Suter and Parise), whom are key pieces to a puzzle of building a top contender, he couldn't sign them to 3-to-4 year contracts at any less than what he signed them for. It was Summer and the UFA market has become the biggest UFA goes to the highest bidder. There is common knowledge that one has to overpay severely to win the bigger UFA sweepstakes. It's part of that game unfortunately. You can either be a small fish in the pond, and sit back and watch as the big players bid up said players or make a big splash and become a big player. They were the two biggest UFAs available this past Summer, and Liepold clearly wants to build a winner, so he did what he had to do. I am not surprised, however, that he wants things fixed. They have to be. He along with everyone else knows, for the NHL to be successful, the market and the contracts has to change to allow for a more level playing field for all 30 teams. To not only ensure that teams are less in the red (which is about half of the league), feeling forced to sign these players to ridiculous terms, but so a team isn't stuck with a player who plays like **** the next 7-10 years of his existing 15 year contract.

The only thing I don't get is how the owners can get off suggesting salary rollbacks. Not honouring current existing contracts. Isn't that illegal or breaching? You signed your name to a deal along with the player. You expect the player to full fill their end, so why not yours? This part confuses me and I can understand any frustration this would cause to those players who signed their deals pre-lockout.

If two parties agree to changing the term of a contract, they can pay a player in hotdogs if they agreed to it. Ther question I have is how are they going to figure out how to turn an existing 13 year deal into a 5 year deal? What if that player already played 3 years into that deal? Incidentally, will the player also be given the option to become a free agent too?

This CBA is nowhere near ready to be signed...

They should honour the contracts that were made. I mean look how much hoopla Alexander Radulov jumping town made... he didn't honour his contract with Nashville, thus the Predators along with the NHL made a big stink about it. As did the IIHF. I agree with the owners side, the new contracts should be no longer than 5 years. This allows teams a chance to sign talents that otherwise are pretty much a pipe dream once signed to those ridiculous long term contracts, and gives the player options. Teams aren't stuck with a rotting talent. In many cases you'll see a player working his ass off in his 5th year (contract year) rather than coasting, to make a big splash on his next contract. Teams may get a better player out of the 5 year contract term vs. 10-15 ones, were players tend to get comfortable knowing they are set for the rest of their professional hockey career, and thus regress. With shortened contract lengths, more players will feel the pressure to perform. This also gives the players more options. If they are bored of an environment or feel saddled down to a team with no immediate bright future, they can sign with a team of their choosing once their contract ends. As long as those teams want them. I like it for both sides. Really, these long term contracts help out no one... even those players with those kind of contracts. How many buy outs have we seen? How many player's names have been tarnished or their legend a skewed because they couldn't live up to such a contract? I don't think one single player has lived up to a ridiculous long term deal. It started with guys like Alexei Yashin and Rick DiPietro. It will continue with guys like Marian Hossa and Ilya Kovalchuk.

Edited the above.

btw Best thing about this lockout... Gomez doesn't get 7.5 mill USD for being a bench warmer. Basically a glorified fan on the player's bench is where he is at this point in his contract term. And to think he doesn't get the moola! Hope for his sake, he has been investing smart. :nana:

The NHL cancels games through Dec. 14, as well as the All-Star Game in Columbus on Jan. 27.

Some players want to decertify union and allow the players to file an antitrust lawsuit against the NHL.

At this rate, I think that's they way things will go. Cleary no one is going to give up anything and if we want hockey back it's the best route to go or we might as well cancel the season. Anything less then 60 games in a season shouldn't even be legitimate anymore IMO.

It worked in 94/95. We had a 48 game season.

there will be no 2012-2013 season & if both sides keep this up, there won't be an NHL

Lets not go that far. There will always be an NHL as long as there is a great following behind the game. Kids will always dream playing for the best league of their respective sport. For hockey, it's the NHL. It just hurts the sport, which has seen growth in other areas of the US and parts of the world. Thus you're seeing kids being drafted out of places like Texas like your Tyler Myers, Stefan Noesens, and your Seth Jones, or your California-born variety in the likes of your Brett Sterlings and Beau Bennetts.

They need to get this **** fixed.. and make certain it doesn't happen again.

No hockey, but the Grey Cup is tonight. Another chance to get a laugh at Toronto's expense. Their mayor is ready.:lol

Stemming from Hamrik & Neuvirth comments, I do think a large part of this halt is coming from players like Crosby & Ovechkin who still have over a decade or more on left on there contracts. These dozen or so players with huge contracts are the real problem here.
