Re: 2013 NHL Season
Florida and Phoenix get that a lot. Lots of retired Canadians have ventured and made those two cities their home. Not to exclude the good amount of retired Americans who migrate south into those areas as well due to the climate and cost. I remember when the Pens played the Panthers, there were almost as many Pens jerseys to the Panthers'. Not surprising, the cheapest seat in their building goes for 170 dollars for 24 home games ( that's season tickets for a shortened 2012/13 campaign), which also includes parking and a Panthers home jersey... which pays for the tickets right there. It's an amazing promo when you consider 170 gives you two nose bleeds seats at one Jets game in Winnipeg.
The Florida Panthers haven't strung together enough successful seasons, nor had the right golden boy to lead the team, to build its fan base up. Playing in that part of the world doesn't help either. Take away the 1996 Stanley Cup Final appearance and the few years that Pavel Bure laced up his skates there, and there hasn't really been much to build on. Every time that team looks like they were on the cusp of building a decent future outlook, they traded their big chips (Jay Bouwmeester, Nathan Horton, and Roberto Luongo), but of course, it's not that easy. All three wanted out of there. Not much one can do when your top guys force your hand. For the longest time the face of the team was Stephen Weiss. Yuck!
The only bright spot now for that franchise is the next 10 years may look a wee bit brighter with the solid prospect offering which is led by Justin Huberdeau and Jacob Markstrom. Having said that, how long does the team have to be mediocre-to-borderline decent, before the new faces give up and force Florida's hand to trade them?
