Not a stats only junkie. Although stats do tell a great deal about a player. I love me some stats, but I am also an observer, player, and a collector. I have seen Martin Brodeur play more times than any other player outside Mario Lemieux. I have followed him closely since 1999 when I picked him up in my keeper fantasy league. When you assume, you make an ASS out of U... and well... YOU!
Patrick Roy didn't have good defence in Montreal and Colorado? Please. That's lame.
Brodeur was a product of great D? 07/08 he played in front a very poor defence, yet still played some of his best hockey capturing his fourth Vezina. The guy is the most durable goalie ever. He's the only goalie to play in 11 seasons of 70 or more starts. He's insane. It was a shock to the hockey world that he actually sustained a near season ending injury since he has been one of the most durable players in the game...
EVER!
He handles the puck better than any goaltender I have seen, and I have seen some of the best in that respect. Ron Hextall comes to mind. I saw him a lot, and once in person. I would say Marty was a smidge better. But not by much. Brodeur is one of the most relaxed, reserved, and classiest players in the game, so that is another surprise when he flipped out in the Canes series.
Either way you count it, Brodeur has had no Scott Stevens, no Scott Niedermayer, no Ken Daneyko, and no Brian Rafalski, yet he's still putting up Vezina numbers.
07/08 was a great testiment to the value that Brodeur had to that Devils team. If anything it showed New Jersey was a product of great goaltending. He stole so many games for them. They weren't even the team this year which saw their offensive game upped and their team discipline and defensive system improve vastly. 07/08 was a year the Devils wouldn't have made the playoffs if it wasn't for Marty's brilliant goaltending.
Ask anyone who the best goalie of all-time. More often than not, people will say it's Marty. btw You also want a model of consistency. Look again to Brodeur. How many 40 win seasons has he had? I am not one to ignore the team in front of him, but you can't dispute his greatness.
You also can't ignore the great teams that Patrick Roy played for as well.
If any goalie deserves a "C" it's Brodeur. He's the true leader of that team.
Stats aren't everything. That's why my all-time favorite dman is Vladimir Konstantinov. Read up on one of the many posts I made of this guy. One is in this thread. It explains why I loved his game. He wasn't a big scoring guy. So quit assuming guy and play again.
I also love Rick Rypien, Guillaume Desbiens, and P.C. Labrie. Probably haven't heard of those guys and may never. They bring a lot of excitement and passion to the games. They are great hitters, fighters, skaters, and can change the tempo of a game on a dime.
