If your child is very young (5-6 years or under), it's probably not the best idea to get her a 3DS unless you can be sure you can monitor her use. Eye strain is a concern for all 3D devices, but it is only damaging for young children due to their eyes not being as fully developed as an adolescent's or an adult's. Nintendo has recommended a rest every 30 minutes of play using 3D mode. It's possible that all the hub-bub over eye strain from 3D is overblown, but you can never be too careful.

Some people have adverse reactions to 3D. They get headaches, dizziness, nausea and sometimes seizures. On the other hand most people don't encounter these problems. It's really a case-by-case situation. Some eye experts believe that there isn't an issue at all. If you daughter doesn't have problems in the past with existing 3D devices (or movies), then I suppose it won't be a problem but I'm hardly qualified to say so.

Proceed with caution.

EDIT: I just read that the 3DS has parental controls that allow you to restrict access to 3D mode. So it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks, man. I wish I could've been in Japan during a new hardware launch. I'm going this spring, but I wish I could've been there to try out the 3DS.

Oh well. Only 30 more days until we get it stateside.

First unboxing videos of the final retail product and a couple of games (in Japan, at least). The guys in the vid speak in Chinese, but I think it's pretty easy to understand what's happening. it's in 720p also:

Correction, he's speaking cantoneses :lol

Thanks for posting all the links & updates though.Appreciate it!

NP, kaz. Are you getting one?

(p.s. I know it's Cantonese, but I just typed Chinese because it's not like most here would notice the difference. And plus, Cantonese is a regional form of Chinese so I'm not that incorrect. :lol)

haha, on that point you are correct and yeah, most ppl can't tell the difference.

I'm definitely getting one but being in Singapore means getting it slower than the rest of the world unless I get an import set. And import set prices can go crazy in my country.

Guess I gotta wait out a little, in the mean time...it's time to finish all my unfinished games on my DS Lite.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I'm feeling alone here, guys. The hype train hasn't arrived at SSF, I guess.

With every Nintendo console from the N64 and up, I always had a "meh" attitude for every piece of hardware leading up to it's release.

Once it gets released, I turn into this guy: :panic: And scramble to dig up the money to buy one and begin running around from store to store hoping to find one.

With Genesis and Dreamcast, I was so unbelievably pumped leading up to the release, I counded the days.. I don't know why that is. It's just a me thing. :dunno What's everybody else's excuse?

Man these get better and better, but I wish we too can see the 3D :monkey2 Kotaku also released some vids as well, and the wait continues...:impatient:

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Man, I really like the deep blue color on the cover, but why didn't nintendo make the whole system like that. I'm really not digging the three toned effect of the system, not to mention the black inner casing.

But I don't want to buy ANOTHER black portable system. lol.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Anyone know if the 3DS is region-free with original DS games? I know 3DS software will be region-specific but I've got a fair few imported DS titles and (ideally) want to be able to play them on a (European) 3DS.

Oh, and sorry if this has been covered already. :D

Yeah I'm visiting all the nerd-centric spots. Looking forward to it.

I've been reading from other boards that people are trying to figure out a way to capture 3DS game footage encoded in 3D so that it could be viewed on Youtube's 3D mode. So then you can see actual 3DS footage using red/cyan glasses or cross-eyed (or if you have a real 3D pc monitor) I'll update if it happens.

Actually, some folks have already figured out how to take the 3D photos shot with the 3DS and convert them into stereoscopic (cross-eye) jpegs:
Cross your eyes and you can get a pretty good representation of how 3D will look on the system itself.

Yeah I think the top cover of the blue 3DS is so awesome, it's too bad the rest of the unit isn't like that. The day-glo teal bottom plate really kills it for me. It totally breaks up the scheme.

I'm going with the black because it looks uniform, though I wish the red one was available at launch.

DS games are region-free and can be played on any 3DS, but DSi specific games are region locked. :)

3DS is sold out in Japan in its first day. Nintendo shipped 400,000 units for launch, they are all gone. Undoubtedly they withheld a large amount as a precaution, but it's still amazing.

First day sales comparisons:
DS: 500,000 shipped. 230,000 sold on first day.
DSi: 200,000 shipped. 170,779 sold in two days.
Wii: 400,000 shipped. 370,000 sold in two days.

PSP: 200,000 shipped. 200,000 sold in two days.
PS3: 81,639 sold in one day.

Good news, you can use the 3DS's circle stick in DS games.

From Kotaku:

For the Aqua Blue 3DS, it gives the handheld a candy-type feeling that is reminiscent of the "Bondi blue" Macs from the late 1990s. The 3DS's middle layer is a different color and edges in ever so slightly. The bottom layer, once again a different color, juts out but not as far as the top layer. The layer cake look is not only striking, but does make it easier to open the 3DS. What's more, the different layers help separate various input switches and slots, both tangibly and psychologically. It all works very well.

But... it's NOT PRETTY :monkey2

Re: Nintendo 3DS

A word on the supply: I'm a manager at a major retail store, and we've been pushing the pre-sells on this hard, having regional contest etc. to get our pre-sell numbers up. I think supply will be there for the launch, but perhaps not long after.

The launch of the 3DS does feel different than the Wii launch, where our pre-sell numbers were strickly limited (for my store that is).

Still getting one. Looks incredibly novel and fun.

Good to know. I think this might end up selling faster than the Wii right out the door, but won't have quite the legs in the long run.

That video review worries me about the highly reflective surface or the screen and the flimsy flip case.

I'm waiting for version 2.0 now.

Yeah I'm worried about the hinge too.

DAmn these vids are great! And I figured it would sell out right away. Those numbers are pretty nice too...
