well, I've had 2 and a half weeks playing this thing now... time for my thoughts I guess.
I LOVE IT
ok... now for my more comprehensive thoughts....
I've had consoles from most manufacturers over the years... so I'm no fanboy to any company, which I'm always kinda proud of (never understood blind fanboyism) atari 2600.... intellivision... commodore 64.... panasonic 3DO.... PS1.... N64..... Gamecube
.....and now the Wii
i was waiting with everyone else for Ninty to release images of their new controller, with all the speculation about what it would be ....things like no buttons, just a touch sensitive screen being rumoured
Then nintendo showed the wiimote... and me... along with the rest of the world... went "huh....?" It was just a stick... a remote control.... how are you supposed to play games with THAT thing??
Once I'd heard about HOW it was supposed to work... the movement... the pointing... the nunchuk.... that was it, I was sold.
Finally... something
different. Not just another controller with yet more buttons.... not just another console with the same games with shinier graphics.
I was aware that most things we took for granted nowadays in gaming, came from nintendo originally.... the gamepad itself... ****ogue stick.... rumble...... wireless controllers..... all these things nintendo did... and straight away everyone else copied, and are now part of 'gaming' .... so i trusted that this new 'motion gimick' would work
and boy did it work.
Wii Sports..... a
free game with the console. is just the most ridiculous amount of fun I've EVER had gaming.
Even though you can play tennis (or anything) by sitting down and just waving it like a remote control... it's just SO much more fun standing up and really swinging as you would for real... you automatically do it. I can't sit down and play... and I can't just do small gentle movements, i HAVE to put everything into it as if I was on a court..... and it's just phenominally entertaining.
I'd seen the images and videos, and read about people saying it was fun... so i assumed it would be, but with it's simple graphics and simple gameplay (the players run automatically... you just control the swinging) I thought it would get boring... fast.
It's not boring at all... it's probably the game i play the most Wii Sports.
Tennis is great..... baseball is fun.... bowling is really good..... boxing is exhausting! lol.... but great fun if you can master the controls... my girlfriend cant aim anywhere... cant do any accurate punches (shes lousy at the training games)... yet she beats my arse every single game just by punching madly at the screen, lol.... but its GREAT fun.... we love golf probably more than the others. Its so relaxing... and strangely seems so comprehensive for such a simple game
the action of 'doing' what you are supposed to be doing on screen, and not pressing buttons... makes it more real. transports you into the game, gives you a connection to what's going on, that other games with standard gamepads jjust don't have. If you played these wiisports games with a gamepad... they would be fun for a bit, but WOULD get boring.... but actually DOING the actions yourself (and the fact that you hear the sound of the ball hitting the raquet/bat/club through the speaker.. and feel the remote 'thud') really makes you feel like you're doing it for real
it's just spectacularly entertaining. It's what they promised..... fun (and my gf can play... and she cant do games like resident evil or tomb raider, cause she has NO finger co-ordination on a gamepad, so nintendo's promise of getting other people to play... certainly works)
I got WiiPlay mainly for the extra remote (well Jane did... it was part of my birthday present... she gave me WiiPlay first.. and then tried to pretend that she couldnt afford a Wii... and that we'd get it in a few months, lol) and the games are ok as an example of how the remote can work. But not really long lasting games. I've played the space hockey game a few times.... I kinda like that game in arcades anyway, with the big tables and the floating on air puck.... so this was good. I like the tanks game... reminds me of older games.... and the shooting is fun, if basic and short
I was looking for Resident Evil 4... as I missed out on that on the Gamecube, but everywhere is sold out here lately.... so (after reading all Wii reviews furiously) I bought my first Zelda game.... ever (yes, yes, i know) Twilight Princess
I'm only up to the first dungeon, but man do I love this game.
At the beginning, when the game really is just teaching you the controls... all the going through your small village part... doing chores for people to learn the controls... and talking to everyone, the music... the lighting.... it gives you a real feeling of being there... of belonging.... to the point that when one of the women said "I hope Darren my son grows up to be you" I pulled a face and said out loud "awww... that's so sweet"
.....I'm 35 years old
anyway.... I just realised how much I've been talking (I think I'm gonna have to edit this post down, lol) I love these games, I love this console... and I love this control system
