Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Was this an April Fool's joke? (Note, I'm not trying to mock you, I'm seriously asking if you were joking.)
No, why would it be? Almost all of the action/fighting scenes were very entertaining and well made whether you like the movie or not.

Celtic vs Grid, Scar doing the combi-stick stab flip, Scar slicing the facehugger in half along with the alien's head, Chopper's death scene, Scar pretending to be a statue and throwing the combi-stick into the guy, Scar leaping from ledge to ledge while at the same time cloaking in slow motion while tons of bullets are flying in the air towards him..yeah, badass.

Even the lesser stuff was awesome.. Like Celtic's epic roar after being shot and decloaked, Scar snapping the chestburster's neck, Celtic and Chopper leaving Scar to slash Quinn's (I think it was Quinn..) face...etc.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Meh. It was just too stylized. AvP-R, if it had a bit better chorgraphy, it would've been alright in the fight department.

The fights need to be something like a man vs. a Cheetah, or Lion.

Not rubber suits.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

I think Aliens is potentially the best scifi movie ever made BUT it suffers with a bit of formula stealing from Alien. At first glance they are total different movies. but the end 20 minutes are essentially the same. Mad maze running whilst there is a destruction countdown going on and then thinking you are safe and away from the alien to only have it pop up and then have to send it into space. That is essentially Alien:R too. Which also again makes Alien 3 the stand out movie. And to me the best.

Looking at it from just a story point of view, which is what I assume you're doing, Alien 3 is by far the worst. That film is riddled with potholes.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Preparation is the key to every job. They were arrogant enough to go ahead with it too.

Not arrogant, just money hungry.

The producer, The beard, The Bay, the writers, all had to be forced into writing a story in a few weeks. It didn't work. It was a horrible, horrible misshap. But it did create a perfect way to show someone why you should never make a film without a script.

Seriously. ROTF should be shown in film schools for a what not to do.

Even the commentary isn't that positive. They aren't outright saying it, but you can tell they're not pleased.

Alien 3 is amazing. The special edition eliminates most of them.

Fincher did a great job. That's how you make a movie without a script.

Completely disagree. But I respect your opinions.

Agree!:goodpost:

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

To those who own a Blu-Ray player, I highly recommend getting ahold of Alien 3 for it (either from the Anthology set or an individual copy). It's got the far-superior special edition of the film, but unlike on the collectors' edition DVD, the crappy sound in the restored scenes has been re-recorded (which means excellent clarity and no mandatory subtitles). Really brings it all together, giving you the best possible A3 experience.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Sure, it's cool. But it's so very un Predator.

They don't jump around go in slow motion. They either stalk their Prey, or face it head on because they can.

If P1 or P2 did this, it wouldn't work. But I think it does in this case.

The story and characters were different, they weren't just the traditional hunters that we're used to seeing..they were arrogant teenage warrior-like predators on their trial "hunt". That was the whole point in the film, the unbloodeds going down to prove themselves, blood themselves, become warriors..it wasn't supposed to be the same as P1/P2, but it wasn't bad.

And Scar did stalk his prey. Hid in the shadows, blended in with the statues as he picked a few of them off to get the casters...in this Queen fight, there wouldn't be point in sneaking around and "stalking" her. He probably wasn't going to win the fight, so he gave it his all. Used everything he had, wanted to fight to the death, etc.

I get what you're saying, about it being so "unpredator"..but I think it just worked specifically for this movie, these predators, their story, their goal, etc.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

LOL I remember watching that in the theater with the rest of my friends (we're all AVP fans from the comic days in the early 90's)...and we all started cracking up cause of that ridiculous behind-the-back-flip-stab. I remember thinking they pulled the move straight out the NBA Jam video game.

Sorry, I just don't like the fight sequences in the film.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

There is even a debate as to whether AVP is a good movie or not?

Predators stay in hot climates - IGNORE (I'm sure it was for training blah blah blah...)

The preds were so ugly I'm not even sure if their mother's loved them...

And what's with the steroid preds? Kept waiting for one to snap into a SlimJim

Street Fighter fight choreography.

Goofy shifting maze set.

T-Rex dressed as a queen alien.

How they could have something as cool and simple as the AVP comic and end up with that train wreck is beyond me.

As many crapy things AVP:R had going I at least thought the skinny pred was a little more in character. Even if everything else was nuts.

Don't get me started on the 8' gauntlet blades.

No it didn't, if anything it created more. The Alien comes from a Bison and yet it still moves like a dog? The special edition also never clears up the biggest plot hole in sci fi history. Some how an egg not only gets on the Sulaco, but ends up on the ceiling inside the cryo room?

And you DON'T make a movie without a script, if that's what he did then I understand why that film was a mess. Fincher did the best he could with what he had to work with. And besides, everyone knows that movie was in development hell for years.

Right, it was a good movie. As a movie alone, it's great. As a cannon part of the A/P universe, not so much.

Predators stay in hot climates - IGNORE (I'm sure it was for training blah blah blah...)

The heat thing isn't a big enough deal to even mention..but yeah.

The pyramid was built BEFORE it was all icey and ____. Plus, the whole extra weight thing could have been because of the cold climate.

The preds were so ugly I'm not even sure if their mother's loved them...
Yep..absolutely horrible predator face design. Especially the eyes and mandibles. When the mandibles are stretching up to his eyes..you have a problem.

Street Fighter fight choreography.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Whatever you wanna call it, it was blended well to fit them..and worked great.

Goofy shifting maze set.
Never saw a problem with the inside design of the pyramid... :dunno

T-Rex dressed as a queen alien.
Yeah, I get that..never saw it as a big problem though. Never really was a fan of the way the Queen in Aliens moved..but that's fine because it was a puppet/pulled by a crane...

How they could have something as cool and simple as the AVP comic and end up with that train wreck is beyond me.
Yep...

As many crapy things AVP:R had going I at least thought the skinny pred was a little more in character. Even if everything else was nuts.
Meh, Wolf was ruined for me the minute he skinned the guy and threw him into the tree. Doing exactly the opposite of what he was sent there to do.
Ridiculous

You should do some research before you say things.

There's plot holes, but Fox screwed everyone over. You don't DO a movie without a script, but sometimes you HAVE too. You have no choice. They give you a deadline, and you have to make it. It's why Fincher left, it's why he hates Alien 3, it's why the movie isn't that great.

But the fact he did that movie, with all that ____ is mighty impressive.

And the little details like the OX/Dog thing? Get over it. It's an Alien. It can do whatever the ____ it wants too.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

I don't see the ox alien not looking/acting enough like the ox being an issue at all..and the beginning was always a mess..didn't make much sense..but it doesn't take anything away from the rest of the film imo.

How did it create more plot holes? Other than the SMALL ox issue..if you can even call it an issue..what is there?

In the theatrical version, they go on about how they're going to trap the alien. Then it never happens. :lol

I find that to be a MUCH bigger issue than the alien not looking/moving enough like an ox ffs..

I'm not the kind of guy who talks out of his ass. I don't talk about things without doing research. Yes, I know all about Fox.

So first the movie is great and now it's not that great? Which is it?

I agree that Fincher did a great job with what he had. I never said it was his fault. I know who's to blame.

I don't even care about the OX/Dog thing, but you brought the special edition so I pointed out yet another plot hole. I like special edition even less then the theatrical.
