Well they did go out of their way to create breathable air inside their ship so I'd think that implies that they have lung capacities similar to our own as far as what is toxic. I'm assuming holding their breath is a different story. It isn't a stretch at all for me to assume that's what the engineer did, I was just curious if other people made the same deduction.
