My best suggestion: check out the movie. From what I was seeing - the chain is visible up threw the infamous Antilles choking scene - but its right at the neck line - after that, its pretty much hidden. I'll let you use your best judgement.......!
Lemme look for some pics
I lightened the pic up to see the chain more - its right at the base of the mask - going across the throat area. Once he was on the Death Star, the chain was under the neck and then hidden.

Yup, the chain seems to be more visible in ROTS, but I think it's usually hidden in all other movies.

Did both, the water treatment to no effect & the wire
the wire trick would work really well for Empire Darth but didn't suit the ANH look I was after
