I agree with Valfar. Saw HT Connor in person and the paint apps are great. SS Old Ben on the other hand...I never really saw why people regarded this one so highly. The paint is still a little too glossy and sloppy in some parts. I guess when compared to the rest of the SS SW line, the paint apps on old ben make him look that much better. But impeccable for factory mass production? Not even close.

Bingo, the figures before him were so glossy or painted unevenly that when Ben came it was like the heavens opened up and gave us a figure. Looking at him now, he is better than most other Star Wars figures but then lacks compared to a Hot Toys for example.

OMG Sideshow are you kidding? What's with the sloppy Hasbro paint on a $120 figure? Hot Toys is charging a hundred dollars more and their stuff looks real!

Sideshows refusal to improve in this department boggles the mind. They seem to be more than happen pumping out mediocre paint apps and destroying the hard work of talented sculptors. Makes no sense. Same story year after year with Sideshow :duh

I know the Hot Toys stuff isn't cheap, but when you see sculpts and paint apps that look almost real like that, you have to wonder why we pay $300+ for a PF that even if the sculpt is much the same, the paint work leaves a lot to be desired in comparison.

I've got figures from Sideshow that are seven years old and look like they came from Sideshow last week. Seven years, no noticable paint improvements, thats pathetic.

This really is an embarrassment. I too can't understand why they don't do everything possible to bridge this gargantuan quality gap. It's kind of a disgrace, really. There is real potential there.

And the price different between Sideshow's Flint and Hot Toys' Barney Ross isn't 100 bucks, it's 40.

There is no excuse for this lack of quality and attention to detail.

They're certainly not the only production company who can be accused of lackluster paint jobs.
Thankfully, we're not at a point where they're ALL bad,

Poor paint apps are the #1 reason I stopped buying Sideshow 1/6th and if they keep having issues like the Ironman maquette, I will only preorder things that I am 90% sure I won't be able to get easily after release. It is sad, but I don't trust Sideshow with my business until I actually see the product in hand.

Sabertooth, Wolverine, and Gambit PFs are examples of excellence, but the paint apps on Sideshow's 1/6th lines are crap and remind me of the old 21st century ultimate solderi 1/6th that Toys R Us sold for $20.

As far as the HT John Connor goes, my HT John Connor's paint apps are freaking amazing.

I've come to assume that they can't do better. I don't know if it has to do with being an American based company while HT, Enterbay and the like are Asian based, but for whatever reason they seem to have little to no control over the paintwork. I imagine this is why they do very little 1/6 product these days. If they didn't still have the Star Wars license, I don't think they would be doing 1/6 at all anymore.

This is the reason why Sideshow needs to merge with Hot Toys and let them handle ALL 1:6 manufacturing while they concentrate on PF's and their polystone junk. They obviously can't improve the production paint after how many years now? There is just no excuse when they keep raising prices and the quality hasn't improved. They still can't get over their "Doll Dot" fetish.

This is flawed thinking. HT can't even handle all of the licenses they have now. This is abundantly obvious with all the QC issues they're having with their figures. And at HT's pricepoints, it's even less forgiving. Besides, I'd rather have ____ty paint apps on a good sculpt, then awesome paint apps on a botched likeness (T-1000 as Sarah). Bad paint apps can be fixed. Botched likenesses can't.
