I never purchased anything from hot toys...do they do anything besides 1/6? I like the look of that expendables piece but dont collect 1/6

This shouldnt be a HT vs. SS thread. What HT does has nothing to do with Sideshows lag in quality paint apps. This is a issue with Sideshow and their apparent lack of motivation to improve. Keep the HT vs. SS stuff in one of the other 500 threads its currently in.

Lets all focus on Sideshow and their lazy "phoned in" paint apps :lecture

Its a joke to others, and I get accused of killing SSC's business for it :)lol), but I vote with my wallet. If an item isn't worth it to me, I'm not going to pay it just to encourage the SSC suits to continue to make subpar product.

At $60 I could take the occassional crap paint app, but not at $100+.

SSC doesn't need to get as good as Hot Toys (I don't want to see $160 figures), but SSC has no excuse for making paint apps this bad at the current pricing. Flint should have been priced closer to the Cobra troops to begin with because he doesn't have lots of accessories...so to follow up the high price with low quality paint it just makes the slap in the face even worse.

This is why I will not preorder any more items from Sideshow. I want to see inhand pics of the actual piece before I spend my money.

I have only 2 remaining preorders with SSC and they are on the verge of being cancelled.

I'm one of the very few that actually likes the exclusive headsculpt of Beach Head..but if the paint apps come out like this, I'm sending it back.

Funny thing is SS has the licences that I really dig, SW, GI Joe, Indy, yet I find myself passing on their offerings lately due to the low overall quality. Flint, for example, looked cool but I thought I'd just play the waiting game and see how he turned out prior to committing. Well, he's got one super crappy looking head and to me the character just isn't important enough to justify spending 120 bucks on a figure that needs either a repaint or a completely new head, meaning I'm out yet another 30-60 bucks.

To my elite friends, much love but ordering through SS just to secure an exclusive version might seem like a great idea; you get the figure first and you get the EX item, win-win, at least on the surface.... The one thing you don't get is the chance to see in hand pics before pulling the trigger on a purchase. Sure, you can send whatever it is back, but once it's in your hands you're far more likely to keep it.

Something's not right here.

:thud: Wow. That is shockingly bad. I had no idea what that Flint was initially and I would have sworn it was an old old Sideshow figure, not something they put out this year! I daresay Bespin Han is a little better!

I can fully admit that Hot Toys does put out a better product, but they are charging anywhere from $40 to $90 more than Sideshow does. I'm perfectly happy with the sculpts and clothing/accessories on Sideshow figures even if they are slightly inferior to HT. The only thing that ever bothers me about SS figures is the paints. How much more $ per figure would it take to get the paint apps to Hot Toys quality?

The thing is, Sideshow's prices are creeping close to HT range, and the paint just doesn't justify that kind of price.

Let's take a look at SS's Flint vs. HT's Barney Ross. At Alter Ego, Flint is listed at $110, and Barney is $152. I think they seem comparable in terms of accessories. The difference is with Barney, you get an infinitely better paint job (and a better base body, IMHO).

I've seen $15 toys on the shelf at Target that have paint jobs like Flint's. If you're going to charge $110 for a figure, every aspect of the figure should be worth the price. I for one would feel very ripped off paying $110 for a figure with paint that can't top a cheap mass-produced Hasbro toy.

the preorder pic just looked light years better. bait and crap. same will be said for beach head I fear.

Anyone who thinks Beachhead will come out of the factory with anything close to that small studios prototype paintjob is living in a dream world.

i don't have any delusions of it looking small studios quality. the question is will it come out looking better than a Hasbro figure, and thats in doubt right now.

Actually ur response is more Fanboy response than mine. Its always obvious what side of the fence you're gonna fall on so that would put u squarely in fanboy territory.

Even in the face of the obvious, u seem to have a need to even defend their grossly haphazard offerings.

I agree with some of ur examples...neither company is perfect. But ill repeat this is an issue SSCs has been grappling with for years and it doesn't seem like they are capable of correcting it.

U point out some of HTs shortcomings and that is ur opinion but it is a more widely held opinion that SSCs paint apps have and are sub-par to what they're capable of...and this Flint is the essence of that shortcoming.

Dude, you took my initial post out of context. I was responding to another freak who said to just let Hot Toys take over the 1:6 licenses as his "cureall" for this topic. Then you got all butthurt thinking I was merely bashing HT, or decided to derail the thread with a SSC vs. HT flamewar. My money's on the first guess. I was merely explaining why that's not such a simple solution. So put away the HT Underoos and stop derailing the thread. :lol

I will still preorder premium formats that I am REALLY interested in and think might be hard to get on the secondary market; but I cancelled all of my Joes after Duke (I just couldn't get over the Small Soldiers paint job, sorry, I tried). I sold off all of my other Joes and am currently selling my Storm Shadow EX and probably my Firefly EX. Storm Shadow is great, but it seems silly to just have two in my collection.

One thing I WILL say is that those of you that frequently complain about price should not be the same people comparing Sideshow's paint apps to Hot Toys paint apps...just saying.

At this point, the only thing I have on preorder with them still is Ms. Marvel EX PF and the Clone Trooper EX PF and Ms. Marvel may get axed.

When I think about the poor QC issues lately and crap paint apps, I rethink Sideshow's commitment to quality and I am hesitant to preorder anything without seeing production pictures in hand. :(

These topics are always interesting because there is almost always someone in them that thinks criticizing Sideshow makes them less of a fan or that because they love the company they have to settle for paint apps that are subpar. The reality is that nothing has changed or will change because its not fiscally necessary to do so. While we would all like to think that Sideshow would do so on the word of their fans but realistically its a company at the end of the day and they'll do only what they have to. People keep buying their figures and posting issues with them, people keep selling their things out without much hassle, what motivation does Sideshow have to change anything? Its the old "If it ain't broke" model and they seem to be doing just fine. Sideshow has to know that they've punted quite a few production pieces and that at times the factory seems to be painting the figures with the same care as you paint a doghouse of a pet you don't like but really there isn't a need to do anything but status quo.

Let's all welcome thenammagazine to the thread :clap
