Re: New PC

Then it could make sense. Only you know what you need in the end :duff

:hi5: Forgot how much I love Newegg for PC parts. Ordered monday night before I went to bed with normal shipping. Came in today :yess: To make things even better the Steam Winter Sale starts up tommorow! So many games I have passed on during the last few sales, because my computer couldn't handle them.

:exactly:
It's not like there's any half decent PC part retail store in the US though :/

Re: New PC

Fry's is the closest you get to a Newegg brick and mortar store

and I don't have a Fry's close to me :( I usually find pretty good deals on parts from Tigerdirect, but I haven't this time around. I'm only ordering a power supply from them since they have decent sales on them right now.

Re: New PC

I have a Fry's 10 minutes from my house and I still prefer to order from NewEgg. Particularly with computer parts, I find their shelf/price tag layout to be particularly confusing. Often times there are more items on the shelf than there are price tags and it's hard to tell which tag goes with which item.

:dunno

Re: New PC

Puppy>games any day! :hi5:

Re: New PC

Got this built. Loving it so far. Had to use my tv for now as my computer monitor since I haven't bought a 1080p monitor yet. Can't wait to load up some Farcry 3!

Re: New PC

Just plugged in my new GTX 560 Ti tonight. For whatever reason the driver installation was failing immediately, so after a call with EVGA tech support (which was a pleasant surprise, because I was not even on hold at all and spoke with an American immediately) he just told me to try an older driver, which worked out fine. It was funny though, because my power supply is pretty old, about 5 years or so, and he wanted me to check to make sure I had enough power and I was reading off the amperage to him and he thought I was reading the numbers wrong because they were so good. I have an Antec Basiq 550 Plus, and he looked it up on his end, and he was like "Yup, that's right, wow"

But I have to say, I guess my expectations were unusually high and I was expecting it to crush Skyrim, but I used Nvidia's tweak guide to adjust a few things, and it auto-detected at "High" . . . I wanted "Ultra" dammit!! :p The graphics didn't really blow me away. I was getting some pretty nasty pop-in with the tree detail, and some of the shrubs on the ground looked like they had a smokey haze around them. I was only getting 30 FPS too

Tomorrow I'll just try to reset the prefs.ini to default and start from scratch and see where that takes me.

Re: New PC

The smokey haze is probably the ambient occlusion, it tries to make some shadows in the corners of things but it's a post-process effect and so things can end up with a sort of shadow around them.

I have an i5 2500K and a GTX 560ti and Skyrim runs like a dream.

Cool, it's good to know I've got the right card. My CPU is a Core 2 Duo 8400, it's 3 GHz. I know the recommended spec on Skyrim is a Quad Core, but, watev. . .

Re: New PC

Putting together a new system myself. I was going to rock a 3TB HD, but a buddy (who's opinion I always value) is insisting I get a solid state drive. Are these things worth the extra coin? Especially with how small they are?

Apparently they are the ****. I didn't have enough money to buy one, but I will be getting one asap.

Re: New PC

SSD's are definitely worth the money, they are best for boot drives... you can get a Crucial M4 120GB for only $89 on sale or a 258GB for $130 to $179 on sale.

Re: New PC

Thanks for the thoughts. I'll probably end up going with one. I guess I'll have to just uninstall games when I don't plan to play them for a while or something. 256 is going to fill up pretty fast.

Re: New PC

Well usually people just use SSD's for operating systems and programs, then use a seperate drive for everything else... they do load games a bit faster though.

Re: New PC

My next PC will most likely have a ~100G SSD for the Windows partition. Depending on price.

Re: New PC

I can't remember where I read it, but there was an article talking about how SSDs were reaching a point where they couldn't go any faster or get any bigger without slowing down.

The gist of the article was that SSDs weren't all they were cracked up to be. It was more of an editorial than an article, but it was an interesting thought, but me being ignorant to SSDs in general, I couldn't make a judgment on it.
