As long as Depp is Jack in these, I can't see not liking them. The storyline can be crap but as long as Jack is fun to watch that is all I ask.

So where's Irish with the word? Makes me nervous.
If Depp doing the Sparrow ___ick is all you seek or ask for, then you'll probably enjoy this... because he's in it more than in any of the others.
But it is NOT a good movie. In fact, it may be the weakest of the 4 (and I hated the last one).

Just one man's opinion. Remember, I love BLACK PEARL but thought DEAD MAN's CHEST was a letdown and I absolutely hated AT WORLD'S END. And lots of folks liked those 2, so...
It sounds like you and a lot of reviewers look at pirates like Indy, first was lightning in a bottle and then progressing worse with each sequel.
I thinks 2 and 3 have issues but I still like the whole series and expect I'll really like this one.

I'm in the same boat as you regarding DMC and AWE...not sure I'll even see this in the theater anymore.

Not sure If I'm going to go for Midnight tommorow or just noon friday, but I'm still really looking forward to seeing this for myself. The insanely mixed reviews for 2 and 3 make it almost impossible to nail down a good comparison for this film to the others but I still think I'll enjoy the simplicity and smaller scale of it all, and I refuse to believe I won't be entertained by at least Ian, Depp, and Rush.

I plan to see Thor this weekend as I was delayed so far in getting to the theaters so I'll be happily avoiding the crowds for this, I'm willing to see it because I love Captain Jack but the reviews so far aren't filling me with the best amounts of hope. I didn't hate AWE but thought it was a meh ending and both paled in comparison to CotBP. So I'm sure I'll like the signature Jack portions but not expecting to love much else.
It's getting pretty ugly on Rotten Tomatoes already. Currently scoring lower than AT WORLD'S END, which actually surprises me.

How's the pirates book?
It's just a good barometer of how a film is critically received. Nothing more, nothing less. I just find it interesting to compare the data sometimes.
