I thought it was great...as has been said, not as good as the first, but better than 2 & 3. Ian McShane was a brilliant "Mr. Beard", and Geoffrey Rush was awesome as always.

Saw this yesterday. God, what a terribly boring movie. As a big fan of the Pirates franchise I was really looking forward to seeing more. I've always liked the sense of adventure and the fantasy world that was constructed in the first trilogy.

But this one... yuck...

I mean, the messy story went nowhere, all characters just kinda 'went along' on some race to the Fountain of Youth which ultimately kinda died out by the end. And those Spanish, trying soooo hard to get there first... just to destroy it? Really?! And that retarted missionary dude, WTF was he doing there? And... ugh, never mind. Worst movie I've seen this year. Only good thing out of this is the DX...

I don't think it's awful but it could deffo have been improved a lot - there was something on the previous page about Depp being the focus of every scene which is not how his character should be - if you watch COTBP he's always in the background giving a scene stealing look or throwing in one liners. I think the start of the film in London was so over the top and unexciting (is that a word) and Blackbeard was DULL. Barbossa was the best - espescially the ending

Love the twist with Barbossa really being a pirate all along, the back story to his leg and how he take's the Queen Anne's Revenge at the end

haven't seen it, but from the reviews l heard sound like it comes down to bad writing and bad directing. not suprising from a rookie director. why the hell didn't they get Gore back.

It was okay, but 90% of the film is at night which was really annoying. Blackbeard was such an anti-climactic villain.

Nice to see Stephen Graham re-teaming with Depp after Public Enemies.

The 3D didn't bring much to the table.

Depp brought his usual Sparrow-ness...and I actually missed Bloom and Knightley.

I'm planning on going during the weekend, but this isn't a "purchase your tickets in advance" for me.

Rookie director? Rob Marshall has been directing crappy movies for over a decade now. They had to know exactly what they were getting with him. More evidence that they didn't really care and that it was a cash grab.

Verbinski left the franchise on his own accord in order to do something much more fresh and creative. And he apparently made the right decision. RANGO alone was a better choice than this.

by rookie l ment never did anything good or big. as in action, adventure. if Gore was apart of this l bet it would of been much better. a good experienced director makes a huge difference.

The directing, action and pacing would surely have been more competent with Verbinski. But one big problem is that the script itself is pretty terrible. The whole film should have been blown up and re-done from the ground up. Of course, I also feel that way about Part 3 and half of Part 2... but at least they were not nearly as dull and plodding as this one is at times.

Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha aren't crappy films... not for everyone though... but yeah, he isn't exactly a great director...
and an odd choice for a franchise like Pirates...

My favorite movie of the year so far!!!
:yess:

I'm going to see this at some point this weekend but I'm no longer rushing.

I have a feeling given my expectations now that I'll like it more than expect, so don't be surprised when I crawl back in here and say "it wasn't as bad as I expected"...

Expectations have everything to do with initial enjoyment.

CHICAGO was decent (but a pale of its source material). Still can't believe it won Oscars. GEISHA was crap.

Let's put it this way... he's made enough films by now for me to call him a hack if CHICAGO is his high-water mark as a director. This PIRATES film seals that deal. McG or Brett Ratner would have done a better job, and that is not hyperbole.

l really like 1 and 2. 1 the best of course. but l really like 2 aswell. those were about the caribbean, and the beauty of it and nice scenery. then the 3rd one was more dark and in unflattering locations. l hear this one is in the dark for much of it, if that's the case then it loses the essence of the "caribbean" for me.

I guess he'll have to go back to big Broadway musicals now. It's about time to reboot "Annie" again don't ya think?

Well Will Smith just bought the rights to put his daughter in as Annie so that joke isn't really as farfetched as you think.

McG or Brett Ratner would have done a better job, and that is not hyperbole.

To me that is damning. What is strange though is that I just read an article that Disney is happy with it and looking to film 5 & 6 similar to 2& 3 so somewhere there is a disconnect from the studio's thought to product?

Sorry. But as a director of anything other than people standing around and singing Marshall brings absolutely nothing to the table. There are huge action set pieces and sequences in this film, and they're all about as dull as they could have been translated to the screen.
