Hey, I tore part 3 to smitherines, the fact is, this movie is not bad. Not great artful cinema but a terrific summer blockbuster that dwarfed Dr. Jones latest try. Not deserving of the fountain of maggots retarded review fest its getting.

Your criteria in the comparison is completely skewed... unless you're making the relative argument that KOTCS was a bigger disappointment because it's from a superior series of films.

ON STRANGER TIDES is not a good movie. And if it's over-hated, then so is KOTCS.

Enjoy, I'll likely go and watch it again later this week. My only letdown was they could have pulled further back when showing wide shots of the Queen Anne. Get all her in the frame and show it off.

So we're comparing this to kotcs? While I like both kotcs is a better movie. Not that POTC 4 is bad but even several hours after I still feel the same in my review. This movie just missed the mark.

Hey, selective criteria is okay... as long as you can own up to it.

I'll remember your retort here the next time someone tells you in the INDY forum that KOTCS wasn't that bad. :lol

You still like KOTCS? I don't think you should be allowed to go on one of your SW prequel tirades anymore. :lol

There's a difference between not hating something and liking it. I'm just one of the few people who can discuss KOTCS rationally and without resorting to hyperbole. It has major issues (particularly the fact that it starts to all apart once it gets to Peru), but is not nearly as awful a film as its geek reputation precedes. It's also not a huge step down in overall quality from LAST CRUSADE (a film I'd still put at a tie with KOTCS as the weakest in the series). KOTCS has problems. But it has its merits, too. And overall it's still a better movie than PIRATES 4. Not too hard to grasp, really. The biggest difference is that an INDY film probably has much bigger shoes to film than a POTC film.

Overall, I liked this movie, I thought it was good and liked it enough to watch it in repeat viewings. I didn't see it in 3D, I felt like this film didn't need it and the glasses from Avatar left me with a headache for hours after the movie so I wasn't going through that again on a movie I didn't think would benefit much from the technology.

As far as a lot of the criticisms in reviews that I've read, I don't get a lot of it and disagree with a bit, and I think a lot of the comments reflect likes from Verbinski's films and had those not existed, the points wouldn't have come up in the reviews. I don't hold it against Marshall to not make a movie exactly like Gore's, you want to keep the general tone but I think it's important to tell it through your own eyes.

That said, this was a VERY unique Pirates movie. I felt this was a very serious film. There was humor, but even the shooting and music of some of the humorous sequences was more serious than similar ones in the first 3 would have been. There is a lighthearted quality to the first 3 that was lacking in this one, I would like to see it found again in future Pirates movies. It didn't make me dislike this one, just made me feel OST very unique. I'm surprised how serious it feels, because so many seemed to voice that AWE was too dark and serious at times, and this is almost a whole movie like that.

Fortunately, I know nothing about Blackbeard beyond this movie besides his name, so I had no expectations, but, I still think they could have developed him more. Blackbeard is Davy Jones in AWE, without a DMC story to build him up first.

Some reviews have ripped the Sparrow-Barbossa relationship saying it's old, but I rather enjoy it and think it still works. I like when a good matching of foes like this is crafted and is exactly why I hoped Barbossa would be back for POTC 4 back when the story wasn't even known, hoping and thinking it'd be the pursuit of the fountain as 3 left off.

Dude read about the real Blackbeard, he is awesome! Glad you enjoyed it, and yes it was much more serious and lacked as much humor but I liked the darker tone.

BTW Best/funniest part is Barbossa's Peg Leg with the rum. "I want one of those.."

I don't know, I also enjoyed....

Sparrow marooning Angelica, I didn't see that coming at all. The judge disguise was good too.

An example of a very serious take on a humorous sequence I think was the palm tree escape, no goofy yells from Jack, his actions totally in control, the music pretty serious in tone, in a Verbinski Pirates that would have been quite funny, much like his escape in Curse.

And if it helps people to get an idea of what this movie is like, I would describe it as Pirates of the Caribbean characters thrown into National Treasure 2, and given both are Bruckheimer films, not much of a coincidence.
