Ah yea, the music just stopping dead was a nice touch when he bolted. :lol And she took a shot at him, that was great too.

How did you feel about the presenation of the ships, I really wish they pulled back further for the Queen Anne, and really didn't care for the flyover of the Providence. Wanted some wider, grander shots of them, that is really my biggest complaint.

I thought their presentation was different, but again, I feel it more a difference between Gore and Rob, and sure those shots were a signature of the first 3, but that's Gore's mark. There's a lot of pressure I'm sure for any filmmaker to take on a franchise where another direct has set standards in the audiences. I wish the best for whatever unlucky soul takes on Batman after Nolan because they'll be ripped to pieces for not being just like Nolan.

However, I will also say, I think the lack of wide shots of landscapes is part of the seriousness of the movie, those shots in the first 3 often gave a feeling and sense of magic and wonder and were often very lighthearted moments, but they approached this one much more serious, I think those shots might feel out of place in this movie.

Yea I can see that. We did get some wider shots
like when the Providence fell to the mermaids and when the Queen Anne was docked up, just none in motion.

I also thought it was sort of funny how Barbossa got defensive about collecting the frogs. Like it was not only did he want the poison, but was trying to fill the void left by Little Jack being stuck.

Looking forward to seeing what of these elements will play into 5, like the voodoo doll, and Gibb's with a bag of full of ships. Also it seems with the Queen Anne, Barbossa and Jack don't have much a reason to be enemies anymore. I just wonder if Mr. Cotton, Pintel etc, died when the Pearl got taken.

From the story, it sounds like Barbossa is the soul survivor of the Pearl, and that's how you write off characters you can't get actors back for or don't want to bring back.

I like how it sets up for more, but there's no specific quest, much like Curse, it's open to more adventures but if there's a 5, the pursuit will be unknown.

Yea I suppose you can write it off to they weren't onboard or were, and leave it to the 5th script as to if they'll return. It left a good bit open ended, like Phillip's fate, although that doesn't bother me.

One thing I'd like to see in a 5th is the EITC take the backseat to the Spanish.

That highlights one weak point for me, my only knowledge of what was taking place in the movie is what was explained in the movie, it didn't make sense why the Spanish were so bent on religion being the only path to everlasting life and destroying the temple. There was no explanation why they took that stance.

Yea that was an interesting twist, not something you really even get time to question when it happens, it all unfolds rather hecticly. The only thing that makes me question is why they bothered even getting the chalices. Seems like it'd take them out of the way. But it also seemed like they followed the others in and maybe didn't know exactly where they were going.

Well, it seemed clear to me, Jack was the only one who knew everything, so the Spanish and Barbossa and company wouldn't have been there if it weren't for Jack.

Overall, I liked this movie, I thought it was good and liked it enough to watch it in repeat viewings. I didn't see it in 3D, I felt like this film didn't need it and the glasses from Avatar left me with a headache for hours after the movie so I wasn't going through that again on a movie I didn't think would benefit much from the technology.

As far as a lot of the criticisms in reviews that I've read, I don't get a lot of it and disagree with a bit, and I think a lot of the comments reflect likes from Verbinski's films and had those not existed, the points wouldn't have come up in the reviews. I don't hold it against Marshall to not make a movie exactly like Gore's, you want to keep the general tone but I think it's important to tell it through your own eyes.

That said, this was a VERY unique Pirates movie. I felt this was a very serious film. There was humor, but even the shooting and music of some of the humorous sequences was more serious than similar ones in the first 3 would have been. There is a lighthearted quality to the first 3 that was lacking in this one, I would like to see it found again in future Pirates movies. It didn't make me dislike this one, just made me feel OST very unique. I'm surprised how serious it feels, because so many seemed to voice that AWE was too dark and serious at times, and this is almost a whole movie like that.

Fortunately, I know nothing about Blackbeard beyond this movie besides his name, so I had no expectations, but, I still think they could have developed him more. Blackbeard is Davy Jones in AWE, without a DMC story to build him up first.

Some reviews have ripped the Sparrow-Barbossa relationship saying it's old, but I rather enjoy it and think it still works. I like when a good matching of foes like this is crafted and is exactly why I hoped Barbossa would be back for POTC 4 back when the story wasn't even known, hoping and thinking it'd be the pursuit of the fountain as 3 left off.

Thanks for the review. Sounds like I'll like it. :)

Your resolve is unshaken. There's hope.

I'm no surprised Sean liked it. I honestly would have been more surprised if he had come out feeling like I did. That is an average film but fun for the most part. As I said for me 6.5 out of 10 and I think it will end up being the weakest of the summer movies for me.

Get a room.

Saw it this evening. I thought it was great. Not the best of the series, but a great addition. I just really love the Jack and Barbossa relationship and I think bringing Barbossa back at the end of DMC was one of the best things the sequels did. So I'm glad we were able to get more of them interacting in this. I even grew to like the Navy look for Barbossa. I just hope we get both versions of him from HT. Hopefully we get the powered face with make up and wig as well with the Navy version :lol

Its not terrible. I still need to see it again. But I was underwelmed. Mostly because of Blackbeard, and the final showdown.

It couldve been the 3D's fault. It was pretty poor. Dispite being filmed in 3D.

I still liked DMC better. But its definatly better then AWE.

that's because 3D sucks.

I didn't realize or had forgotten that this was shot with 3d cameras. It just didn't come out well at all. The one thing I'd actually say might be great actually was the score. I really have enjoyed listening to it.

I would say the cd has about half of it unfortunately. Maybe it was just me but I didn't hear that much of the Rodrigo y Gabriela stuff in the actual movie. It seemed that there was way more on the cd.

We went to a little local theater at for the first midnight showing and saw it in 2D ( which was just fine, never even thought of 3D while viewing ) it was just over half full seating wise so easy to find a seat. There were a few pirate costumers there as well.

My whole " review " is full of spoilers, so fair warning..I don't hold back. ;)

Basically..I loved it. It was great and really pumped up my nostalgic feelings a lot. If I had to number it, it would be better than AWE but not as good CotBP. So it either ties with DMC or is above it. My only real complaint was the few plot holes and the running time ..my butt went numb half way through..but I still wanted MORE. It felt..rushed near the end..like it jumped around..not giant gaps really..but enough if it was a little off-putting. And a few of the sets and such could have been better..after reading the book I imagined swamps, fog, mists, gnarled moss covered trees and such. Even the Fountain wasn't what I had in my mind..it looked to be in our world instead of somewhere else on another plane..the water outside ran up..but the Fountain actually just runs down. in a tiny pool. No geyser of water continually frothing up or anything.

Mermaids were great except for the tiniest of details I noted before like the teeth were a little too vampiric. Jack did not get slapped by Marina or anyone the whole film..that's not right.

The Spanish served a purpose and that was it. There reason for finding the Fountain was pretty much crap though..destroying it and the chalices because only God has the ability to give immortality. :? Plot hole time, if they were going to destroy it and the chalices then why not destroy them when they first had them instead of cleaning them up and giving them the chance to be stolen ?

Blackbeard, pretty cool..nothing like his " younger self " though. Def evil and beyond redemption..Jack switching the chalices at the end doesn't count as redemption since it was a trick and he still dies.

Angelica, she was understood clearly and played a great role..hope to see her again and judging by her finding of the voodoo doll as the last scene we will. She really is Blackbeard's daughter and cared for him..Jack " saving " her by tricking Blackbeard into giving his life for her though..she won't forgive that.

Barbossa is just as clever as ever despite his new hobby which might make you think he's thought a little too much like Jack. Not interested in the Fountain at all he gets his Revenge..literally and figuratively then heads to Tortuga.

Syrena and the missionary..I had no problem with them. They came along fine with a mutual attraction for each other and disappeared together in such a way they will either be back in a sequel, or a book or something. It was left pretty open for them to return...unless she ends up eating him afterall..lol

Zombies were the basically the total disappointment I was afraid they would be..they looked and acted just like ole' Too Long from CotBP...they looked and behaved pretty much like average grumpy pirates.

The ships is bottles was really cool..I'd def like a Pearl like that. I wonder why Gibbs took all of them though ( aside from just being a pirate ) ? and I highly doubt Jack's plan to get her back to ship shape will work.. ;)

It's pretty easy to guess where POTC 5 is going...the Sword of Triton and the jewels that can control the tides and winds that Angelica mentions..all work together.

One thing that bugged me is that both Barbossa and Jack were obsessed with immortality..but they shrug it aside very easily and just move on by the end of the film. Have they forgotten
already what it was like to be dead and that they both said they weren't going back there ?

The CD definitely captures the tone of the movie though, it sounds quite serious and dark compared to the other scores and that's what the movie is.
