On re-watching, I'm definitely bothered by how the end was handled for Barbossa, not that he was killed off, but the circumstances, if you're going to end a character with a sacrifice, make it feel necessary. Salazaar was coming for them, but didn't feel like an unbeatable threat so Barbossa's choice feels unnecessary.

My sentiments exactly. :exactly:

Yeah, the ending was a bit muddled. The parting of the sea -- and how that worked with the ghost crew. The power of the trident -- a little broad; talk about a Mary Sue McGuffin. Wouldn't the Trident have undone absolutely everything magical in the world -- like Davy Jones' own curse or the magic of the compass?

And the 'death' of Salazar was a bit silly -- the action/staging of it was awkward. They (the heroes) should have gotten aboard the Pearl then, while they're hugging, Salazar could have climbed over the side to do something nasty... and then the sacrifice as it played out.

Salazar should have killed Barbossa, instead of his sacrifice. I agree that felt a little forced (almost the last act was like this).

That would have made his daughter even more inclined to live the pirates life, after a cursed navy officer kills him.

Part of the problem is Salazaar is now just a mortal during those last moments, so his threat was even less, they never really sold him as much of a threat as a person, his threat was his ship or being a ghost, he wasn't presented as some cunning fighter or anything like that.

It's got flaws, but not the kind that really hinder the ability to enjoy the film. If you really want to dissect these movies, even Curse has plotholes, but you overlook them for the fun of the ride that is the movie, which many movies rely on. Spielberg said it with JAWS when questioned about things he wanted to happen, if you can get them to accept A, then they'll be open to accepting B.

Speaking of which, has anyone here listened to the audio commentary by Ted Elliot, Terry Rossio, Stuart Beattie and Jay Wolpert for the Curse of the Black Pearl DVD? They actually explain the whole backstory between Jack, Barbossa, and the mutiny during the end credits (I think there are still some plot holes though). The commentary is actually quite interesting.

I actually felt that Salazar was dangerous as both a man and a ghost. He was a zealot. Driven by an almost religious madness to cleanse the seas. And his rage was on full demonstration like when he was just cutting up those victims hanging upside-down.

As a human, Salazar seemed far more dangerous than Davy Jones as a human. But of course its much more fun to keep your villain as a monster -- once he's been 'redeemed' in a fashion, he does seem less threatening. One would assume he'd even be thankful. That would have been a nice betrayal moment in the movie -- if even Salazar looked like he was going to thank Sparrow for releasing him from his curse -- but his hatred makes him lash out anyway. To make it clear there is no saving this madman.

One of the bigger issues I've noticed is the way the curse works. Barbossa is shot, albeit shortly, before will pays his blood sacrifice and Jack's, and once the curse lifts, it affects him and kills him, yet Jack being run through with a sword not much before that, has no impact. However, it's one of the more classic moments in the whole movie and such a pay off moment, it doesn't get questioned much.

I guess it's a good thing that I went to see this for a second time a while ago - because my local theatre just pulled it. :gah:

Anyone know where that Asian bootleg can be streamed?

On a related, sad note, Diamond Select just cancelled production of their Jack Sparrow and Barbossa figures out of the blue, perhaps the reception in the US is being felt insufficient, seems overseas is carrying it.

Thanks! :)

What really bums me out is that we didn't even get to see Diamond Select's prototype of Salazar. With the lack of good Pirates 5 merchandise, I guess I'll be buying that LEGO Silent Mary set later in the year.

Yeah, they Walmart/Toys R Us level toys are extremely kid focused this time around, DST was an affordable option for adults. What's weird is they fairly recently announced Jack and Barbossa including pieces to build a Black Pearl wheel diorama, I added Barbossa on preorder just for that so I could display a Jack at the wheel since I don't have DX06 and DX15 doesn't include a wheel.

I fear this may be the final voyage of Captain Sparrow and the Pirates franchise as we know it, with maybe something new in 10 years when they think Pirates may be popular again.

I had the original Jack Sparrow PF on order originally but unfortunately had to cancel and I passed on the DX06. I'm not going to miss the DX15 as it very well could be the last chance at a high end Capt Jack - I love the base and the mix of real hair works well on this IMO.

I really wanted Jack at the wheel as well so I picked up a Hallmark ornament that's the perfect size for my Pirate's display behind my bar.

Hopefully Dead Men Tell No Tales wasn't the end - I thought it was a fun movie and brought me right back to what I enjoyed about Curse Of The Black Pearl.

I both love and hate that post credits scene in Dead Men Tell No Tales - love it because you-know-who is back, but at the same time hate it because it will really bum me out if they don't do a sixth installment.

I have almost all the Hallmark ornaments, including the wheel one, so I guess I am covered that way. I'm disappointed that the ornament this year is a 3D Dead Men Tell No Tales skull logo and not a character piece.

Yeah I think this one petered out as they say in the US- not good. Overall the franchise is done I believe- too bad but they went out on a good last film!

there plenty of rumors already about a 6, I wouldn't rule it out. Bloom says he's thinks DMTNT is the beginning of a new trilogy, and that after credits scene cements it.
