People actually like this movie or am I losing my handle on sarcasm?

Finally. You missed the years best movie.

Wow I almost missed seeing this on the big screen which would have been a crime. My kids saw it with my ex a few weeks back and then begged me to take them so they could see it again. Phew! TLJ will have its work cut out for it to top this.

What did you think of Depps 5th time in the role?

I thought that Depp and basically the entire cast (including newcomers) were a return to the glory days of COTBP. He did great, IMO.

A few random thoughts:

1. I darn near teared up during *both* the prologue and epilogue.
2. POTC probably has the best villains of any series that began in the 21st century.
3. That "bank heist" opening looked like it cost $50 million alone. Did they really build an entire town just to destroy half of it?
4. I absolutely loved the "Young Jack" flashback. Could have watched an entire movie just about him. Jack riding in on the sinking ship might be one of the greatest introductions to a character ever but they somehow got away with sneaking in a little "prequel" story that didn't taint the character. And they did exactly what is NOT happening with Han Solo since they figured out a way to do it with Depp himself and not a brand new actor that looks nothing like him. Actually speaking of Han Solo it's kind of funny that they even showed how Jack became famous and got his "name." I can't imagine that they'll come close to doing it as well with HS. We'll see of course but man POTC5 really nailed it.
5. Loved the visual gags. The spinning guillotine sequence was hilarious.
6. I enjoyed all the other POTC films (I consider COTBP a true classic and enjoy good portions of Part 2 and 3, OST I'm a little "meh" on though) however the fate of the characters at the end of AWE never really sat well with me and was a downer that kind of clouded their entire arc. This movie restored things to the way I always wanted them to end, good closure, a perfect note to end on if they don't do any more.

A couple nitpicks:

1. The escape from the zombie sharks and Salazar's charging men just felt a little too over the top, even for POTC.
2. There was a part before that (which actually escapes me now) that I remember thinking was just a bit too convenient/contrived. If it pops back into my head I'll make mention of it, lol.
3. It was so awesome to see David Wenham back on the big screen that I was bummed that he wasn't used more.

Overall just epic summer entertainment, great thrills, great laughs, one of the most satisfying popcorn films I've seen in quite some time.

@Khev

great review, glad you liked it man!

maybe the convenience you over looked was the witch? she's great but really came out of nowhere then disappeared. makes me wonder if she'll have a bigger part in the (hopeful) sequel.

Agree about Jack, he was perfect in this flick!

Great review:clap. I totally enjoyed this film. Love all the POTCs but this one IMO was brilliant. Jack 1/6 HT is on PO:cool: and can't wait for the home release! (And really glad I saw this twice in theater!)

I'm very happy that I had to time to see it twice as well, I don't get to do that often anymore.

Almost PO'd jack but I have the OST DX, it was a hard pass. :lol

@Khev

great review, glad you liked it man!

Thanks. This really is a movie that people should go out and see for themselves to decide if they like it or not. Can't wait to own the 3D blu at home!

Whatever it was it stuck out to me while watching it but it still escapes me now so I guess it couldn't have been too bad. I want to say it had something to do with one of Henry and Carina's many escapes but I'll probably just have to wait until I see it again to know for sure.

Thanks Sassafras. I know this hasn't been breaking records in the US, have only a few of us gone and seen it? I think people who take RT scores at face value are really going to regret it when they finally see this one.

BEST visual gag in the entire series. First time I've laughed out loud that hard in the theater in a long time.

Yeah, great stuff. And this movie continues Disney's streak of showcasing heroic dads.

I do hope that Disney lets this be the end though (maybe the low domestic box office will cinch that.) One thing I really liked was that it:

restored the proper ending of Curse of the Black Pearl with Barbossa dead and Will and Elizabeth assumedly living happily ever after. Yes I did see the after credit scene but right now I'm just taking it as Will having a dream within a dream.

Khev, Sorry, I want more. :lol

ZaCH....I have all the HT Jacks, plus a PF. I'm trying really hard not to get the new one but.......it's soooooo haaaaaaaaard!

Honestly, I'd be fine with another 2 films. :lol

And it's so difficult! I really want that pearl replica you linked to a few weeks back, it looks awesome.

I opted for the non-3D, how was it khev? better than SM:H?

I saw the movie in 2D but when I watched GotG2 in IMAX 3D they showed that long clip of the zombie shark attack and that scene definitely looked awesome in 3D. So I'll get the 2D/3D combo just to have both options at home. I do have an affinity for the 2D version though just because it matches the look of the first three.

Last night I watched COTBP again on Netflix (first time I've seen it from beginning to end in years) and it really is a solid classic to me. A very well balanced, well paced adventure movie with a ton of great characters and sequences. And I had totally forgotten that Jack cursed himself at the end! The final swordfight in the treasure cave is probably still my favorite finale of the series. I also thought it was funny how often Jack referred to Will as a eunuch and then in POTC5 even after learning he had a son he still referred to Will as a "cursed pirate eunuch" or whatever. :lol

Oh I forgot to mention that I absolutely loved the extra backstory the new movie gave to the compass. Of course a pirate artifact of that power would have a downside. Use it and it takes you to what you want most, discard it and it unleashes what you fear the most. Brilliant!

Good review Khev.

I really enjoyed this movie and it actually had me laughing out loud in the cinema which is so rare for a film these days. Shame it seems to have just been and gone without much of a fuss. Guess kids don't want to be pirates anymore and it's all about those female superheroes now.

Agree with comments about the ending, it was perfect for me.
