Guess kids don't want to be pirates anymore and it's all about those female superheroes now.

That's kinda the sad reality of it. What truly surprises me is that Disney didn't at least pay some critics in advance to say good things about it on Rotten Tomatoes. They do it all the time with some of their Marvel stuff, so why not POTC? :dunno

I guess they either put too much confidence in it or they just didn't care.

This movie, so far, made 171 mill here and another 604 mill overseas. If they don't make another one, it isn't because this one didn't make money.

Yup, you're right on the mark ween.

The director did say this flick was the "beginning of a possible trilogy." so there is hope!

Here's my take, this movie is crafted to be an acceptable end if the series goes on, and sets up sequel potential also. My only issue is that, as a franchise finale, the "acceptable" quality of it as a finale makes me really hope for another.

Agreed, and I think Depp has another one or two in him, he loves it.

How great would it be to get Gore back though? That would be a proper send-off if they find a story he likes.

I'm so sick of these. The first one was good, the rest were terrible.

Hafta agree to disagree...for me these fall right into the "MCU watchability" category. Between Depp and the rest of the cast, the costumes, imagination, sets IMO there's not one of these films that doesn't have a lot to offer. For me same as the MCU - there's some films I like better than others, but not one of them that doesn't have plenty of good stuff.

Like for instance I think that map in At World's End is still one of the coolest things...the mermaids...Davy Jones and Tia Dalma...Jack's crew...the ships...Barbossa!

I feel sorry for folks who blew this off in theaters. Suspect most home viewers even with a great set-up aren't gonna be able to match a theater experience. This was just a d@mn good movie and I can't wait to own it. (Plus was drooling over the SDCC pics of HT Sparrow - so glad I have him on PO, looks like a beautiful fig)

Not saying it sarcastically, but what has Gore done since, you never hear his name promoted with movies.

Rango, The Lone Ranger (real stinker) and a movie called "The Cure For Wellness" that I haven't seen. So, not much. :lol

He's got a great eye on how to shoot these films though.

Gore definitely had a style to the films that is as much a part of their appeal as the characters and everything else. Something sorely missed in OST and something that came back quite a bit in this film, though not 100%, the overuse of CGI for the ship scenes loses some qualities that the first 3 had being shot on location. CGI works in the maelstrom because there's so many weather elements going on as well that it all works, but in this film, there are simple horizon shots that just felt too fake, like sunrise as Barbossa and Salazaar discuss the backstory with Jack.

Yup exactly, DMTNT is almost right on the money except for a few instances that you listed. Gore is a very "on location" director, and same goes for Bruckheimer's philosophy as well, so they will always be the best looking of the pirates IMO. Something the last 2 haven't quite hit. Though, DMTNT is a big change compared to OST.

There's actually a quote from Jerry Bruckheimer, and I'm paraphrasing here, but it goes a long the line of "It's called Pirates of the Caribbean, so we're not going to shoot it in an LA backlot, we're going to shoot it in the Caribbean!"

I wish that philosophy was still adapted for flicks today.

Were any scenes in the new one shot in the Caribbean? I was trying to pay attention to the Locations listed in the credits and all I noticed were the UK, Australia, and a couple other places but nothing that stuck out as an actual Caribbean location.
