Yellow - the picture of your whole gang just begs for some head swapping fun.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I have to say when it first came out I was blown away by it, but in my most humble of oppinions the Yulli sculpts are all better, esp Cannibal Jack.

That's either got to be a different head or the first shots of it by Kojun were very well lit because I agree in these shots, Yulli does come out on top, and outside of Cannibal portrait, even she has a ways to go nailing Captain Jack.

Kojun's Jack is really only good for the portrait to me, the rest looks like he took his own head and hands and slapped them on Medicom Jack.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I love the hair, but not the sculpt.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

The sculpt looks generic and the hair looks trashy. Yulli has been the one to nail the Depp Jack spot on and I think sculpted hair is the only with to go with Jack, since he has so much going on there.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Yeah, I'm not a fan of that sculpt. I think all three of Yulli's sculpts are perfect.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

As much as I love Yulli's skills and most of her portraits, to me she's onlt 1/3 capturing Jack Sparrow. She has Johnny Depp down, but not Sparrow. Too serious on the first one, Cannibal is great, and too smiling on the third head. Kojun nailed the ammount of smirk to give Sparrow in his portrait.

Yes, but if almost everything else is wrong, the smirk doesn't do much, does it?

Yulli's sculpts, no matter how accurately they captured Sparrow's persona, gave us options and variety. And that Cannibal Jack sculpt is just magnificent.

The Kojun sculpt just looks like some random hispanic cosplayer.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I'm not saying Kojun's is better than Yulli's, I'm saying they're all wrong for various reasons. Kojun gets presenting the character but doesn't nail the Depp likeness (though I'd like to see him try now, I believe Sparrow is one of his earliest works and most of his recent stuff has really impressed, Carlito's Way, John Connor), and Yulli has Depp down but not Sparrow's persona outside of the Cannibal head which is too extreme an expression to use as your common Sparrow head.

I'm hoping for a DX Sparrow so we can get:

- Portrait with accurrate Johnny Depp likeness and Sparrow character essence.
- Proper sized baldric
- Correct color and fabric coat
- Portrait with PERS eye technology

Perhaps a step closer to DX Jack Sparrow. The buttons on this coat are much more like the ones on Jack's coat than any previous Sparrow.

I actually rather liked the smiling head. I swapped it with the serious head and think he looks fantastic.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I just find it too much, Jack smiles at times, but if you were to sum up Jack in one head, it'd be wide eyed with a slight, cocky smirk. While the anatomy may not be dead on Depp in Kojun's sculpt, the eyes and smirk are just right. Mix those elements with a good Depp portrait and you've got a perfect representation of Captain Sparrow.

I agree with you, I thought the smiling head looked too cheerful. When Jack flashes that smirk it should look devious.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Yeah, it's almost as if he's going to whisper something out of the corner of his mouth.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

If HT does do a DX Jack, I hope they include not only the moving eye system, but interchangeable heads with different expressions. I think that's the main reason I haven't been really satisfied with any of the Jack Sparrow figures released so far. It's really tough to capture a frenetic character like that in a static figure. Being able to change from serious to devious to bug-eyed would help solve that problem. He also needs soft, flexible boots to achieve the off-balance poses.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I could probably identify a dozen expressions to make a unique head for, but like the Joker, there is a look I'd settle for as all encompassing for Jack, and that'd be this, with PERS of course.

Slight smirk of arrogance, wide eyes. To me, that'd be the "average" look for Jack, which is what figures are about, capturing the average look of a character.
