Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

No, no hasbro figure has that much detail. I'll be curious to see how hard/soft the plastic comesout.

That's a good question. Softer plastic usually looks more toy-like, but harder stuff would be more restrictive.

Don't get me in trouble. :lol I can do that well enough on my own.:duh

Heh. Just trying to bring some Star Wars spirit into the thread. :devil

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Cool, Davy's coming soon. Hopefully I'll have the money by then. Although luckily it's still available for order from Sideshow so hopefully it'll still be like that if I have to cancel and order again later.

Is it just me or do the Davy Jones pics look like someone took a picture of a picture? The one with Jack Sparrow looks like Jack's face is warped.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I don't know what it is, but I do think there's something about the pictures that is off. They seem overexposed and also somehow a bit lacking in detail.

I agree. The image is just washed out.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I think that new smiling head would look much better if the upper lip was repainted slightly to make the lip part less full. Bring the skin colour down to thin the lip and I think it could very well be spot on...

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I guess this question is addressed to Wookster. Looking at the Will Turner pics, it looks like his hair isn't done as a separate piece. Would that be correct?

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Yep, the hair is painted directly onto the head, the only seperate piece is the ponytail. Here are a few detail shots for ya!

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Thanks for that Wookster. Talk about the 'quick reply' feature. That was fast. Bit of an unsightly seam running over the top, hadn't noticed that before.

I wonder why they do some as separate pieces and others like this. Cheers mate.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I'm sitting at work right now (I'm self employed, so don't have to justify wasting half my day on 'toy' correspondence') I'd already uploaded those to my photobucket account so hence the speedy turn around.
The seam is there but the flash photography made it far more prevalent than it is in person and the size of that pic really makes it scream at you.
I think HT, like SST only do the separate piece if the hair hangs down over or around the face.

As I said in the review, my wife anounced she wanted the POTC heroic trio for her shelf (thought I'd indulge her for a while!), poor old Aragorn, her previous favorite has been usurped.

Here's 2 good examples of why not to. There are some types of hair that can work with the rubber "wig" method, with the flat hairline Will probably would have worked. Anything with a part like Elizabeth and Aragorn above, it's unsightly and unrealistic looking because you can always see a good 1/8 inch or so of the rubber sticking out,t here's no smooth flow into the the head and it can be detracting. Elizabeth would probably be a 10 figure if not for her hair but that knocks her down to an 8.5-9 to me. Some hairstyles necessitate the "wig" method, some don't, and I imagine it costs more to do things that way so they avoid doing it if they don't have to, plus there's more room for error if the factory doesn't put the "wig" on right.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

The only figure with separate hair that has truly bothered me is Qui-gon. Aragorn has the loose hair to mute the effect and Elizabeth has the hat. Qui-gon's is glaring. The more that a hairline is exposed, the more reason there is to not use two pieces.

I was looking at a bunch of other figures, and I can't really see the reasoning behind ever using two pieces. A single sculpt is the way to go.

I actually find Qui-Gon's hair subtle and one of the more natural looking pieces that uses the "wig" technique, same with SSC Legolas. The hat does hide Elizabeth's, but the issue for me is I don't care for the hat with her hair down like it is because her hair was up until the hat blew away and her hair is done like when she was fighting. It's just a poor way to do sculpted hair on a 1/6 figure where you have anything other than a smooth transition like Qui-Gon and Legolas, parted hair of any kind like Elizabeth has just can't be done and look good with a "wig".

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

You've said a number of times that you don't like the hair on Elizabeth, but I tend to agree with devilof76 that Qui-gon is far more distracting. Elizabeth's hair doesn't bother me in the slightest, but Qui-gon looks like his hair is literally floating over his head.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I have no problem with Liz' hair, I like it a lot. The only option for sculpted hair would be in my opinion the knotted version when she wore the hat in the movie.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Have to admit Ms Swanns has never really bothered me where as Qui Gon's just screams at me. I guess we all just pick up on different points.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Yeah, Swanns doesn't bother as far as Qui-Gon it does a little just because of the sides. Other than that I don't think about it much.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I can't wrap my head around how Qui-Gon's can look unattached to his head and Elizabeth's not that much :google

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Elizabeth's looks worse to me too, but really neither bothers me much.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

It's probably how I look at Elizabeth and some of the others that it bothers me. Slap her up on a shelf and in most lighting and from a distance it'll be fine, but when you get into photos and stuff like I do, it becomes atrocious, I shot her less because of the way shadows and highlights would catch her part and and the look it had, it was blatant that it wasn't attached.
