It's safe to assume with fair certainty that customers are the ones losing out.

That applies to everything when an option is taken away. In this case the option of buying it cheaper as a used copy.
I don't disagree with that but to act like used games are good for publishers is short sighted. Used games are good for used game retailers and consumers.

Mmmm but Noomi is so right :monkey3

That's true. The Dreamcast was the system that we deserved, but not the one that we needed then. So we didn't buy it, because we thought it could take it. We were wrong.

:lol nice! But sad, too.

For next-gen:

Sony: "Targeting used games won't get their money back. I knew Microsoft wouldn't go down without a fight, but this is different. They crossed the line."

You crossed the line first, Sony. You allowed game sharing and offline play. And in their desperation they turned to a line of gaming restrictions they didn't fully understand. Some companies aren't looking for anything logical. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some companies just want to watch the world cry because they can't play offline.

So your staying you would have NEVER bought Elder Srcolls had you not got 10-20% off due to a trade in?

I agree on the Assasins creed point somewhat, I was in a similar situation, but friends convinced me 2 was good ( I still have 1). I didn't buy it used , I bought it when the price dropped, (the next version had just come out). It wasn't any cheaper used really. So the two situations very similar, but one sernario the publisher made less $ purely based on used games.

i wouldnt say never, but it definitely helped. I did not go into the store with Elder scrolls in mind. The guy at the counter recommended it to me. I get your point though. If i remember correct i was planning on trading AC 1 in for rogue warrior or some crap like that. I loved the Marcinko books.

:lol Well done.

Kudos for both, I just read last 10 pages of this thread, it's a BOMB!

Btw, used games don't affect devs, I thought we had established this :dunno

OMG, I don't think that there's a single situation in life, where it's inappropriate to pull out a Dark Knight quote :lol.

Didn't say it was good for them, but that it isn't bad for them. :wink1:

It can be. I had a perfect example. One person bought a games used and I bought it new(discounted after it had been of for a while). There was little price difference, when I bought it, less than $5. Now the publisher got money from my sale but got nothing from the used sale.

If there were no used games, people would have to buy new copies. So yeah, used games are bad for them.

Or some people wouldnt buy anything at all. I think its a moot point to argue this. Sometimes buying a used game opens up a franchise for more sales in the future. Sometimes it doesnt. I think used games serve a purpose. It both hurts and helps developers.

Or not buy it at all.

That game sold new before it was sold to a retailer to then be sold used later on.

So the publisher got the money from the customer buying the used game (from the original customer back when it sold for new) and from the customer buying it new

True. But if you were to ask a publisher if they preferred the sale of a used game or a new one, they'd say new.

Absolutely. Money makes the world go 'round.

But they would also love to have someone buy every game in their franchise (if applicable) because they were able to start playing due to a used game.
