:lecture I agree with the release date. Seems like an October movie.

Just got home from seeing it. I love the 1920 and 30s, love the mob, love Depp. Overall, I thought the movie was really good. I am not a fan of shakey camras but for some reason the shakey cam did not bother me in this movie.

I watched a 2 hour history channel documentary on Dillengar about a year ago and the movie was spot on with pretty much every detail.

Did Dillengar really walk in the police station though? Or was that done just to show us how cocky he was.

I really love the score from this movie, I can't stop listening to the final Elliot Goldenthal track on the album, it's just so moving.

I thought this was a huge misfire by Mann. Really dissappointed. Acting was good, script was not, the direction was the most dissappointing. Mann needed to hit the zoom out button and quit shaking the camera around. This was closer to Miami Vice Mann than it was Heat Mann. The Road is my last hope for 2009.

I need to pick that up....I absolutely loved the music throughout the entire film.

Definitely worth a buy. Even the songs besides Goldenthal's score are pretty good, both tracks by Otis Taylor are great, you'll easily recognize those, very fun pieces. I also really like the moody sound of Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah which is a mix with Goldenthal, very moody.

Liked the movie, but I thought the film was just a chore to look at. It looked so horrible IMO. I couldnt stand his style in Miami Vice, and I couldnt stand it here. Looked like a bad DTV movie, or a crappy documentary on PBS.

But other then that, it was well acted, and well played.

Yes, the sets and countrysides he choose for the most part were bland. Not much colours. I did love some of the shots, and seeing all the old vehicles.

It was a fantastic flick. I enjoyed it. Would I see it again? Not likely.

***1/2 out of 5.

good ,entertaining movie. but not completely accurate.there were alot of discrepancies... baby face nelson did not die in a shoot out with agent purvis. later 2 of the fbi agents at the biograph would get killed by baby face nelson.something i did not no that i just learned
fact john dillinger was my height. 5ft 7 inch. you can find this info on the fbi website.

Saw it a couple of days ago. I liked it a lot. Reminded me of the old Cagney gangster movies ... hard-nosed villains, and gritty heroes. The characters harkened to a time when men were men, and action was more important than talk -- soft-spoken, straight laced gunslingers.

"Talk low, talk slow, and don't say too much." -- John Wayne

I wouldn't put it in the top tier of crime dramas, with The Departed or The Godfather -- but I'd put right below that, up there with Heat or American Gangster.

I saw the movie yesterday. It was an average movie. The shootout scenes made the movie. I'm not well versed at all with 30's gangsters so I can't tell you how close it was to real life events. The plot was okay and there were a few scene that stuck out. Watching to FBI, or should I say BI, work as a team without radios and preplanning like in today's world was different. I think Bale did a very good job. Depp was wonderful as usual. I'm a big fan of most of his movie role choices. He has a talent that can play anything that is asked of him. Overall my non professional critic opinion, the movie rates a 6/10.

I just got back from seeing it and i thought it was really good. It dragged on a bit at times, like all Mann movies, and the shooting scenes were awesome.

And i couldnt stand that fat cop :emperor

Just saw it too and I liked it a lot. I kept comparing it to The Untouchables, the steps from the first bank even looked just like the Untouchable steps. I thought it suffered a bit in comparison - the stylized look of The Untouchables was one of the things I really liked about it. Considering this was a Michael Mann film, I expected a lot more stylization.

But Depp and Bale were great as was everyone else. It was weird that they had name actors in such tiny roles though - but it helped add gravitas to the proceedings. Channing Tatum as Pretty Boy Floyd was on for about 30 secs, and Leelee Sobieski had maybe 2 lines. I didn't even recognize David Wenham until he'd been on for a few scenes - don't think he had any lines at all.

This was 2 hrs. 23 mins., Mann probably has a much longer cut in mind for the DVD.

Emilie de Ravin (Claire from LOST) also has a small part during the 1st bank robbery.

She was the one that Johnny tied to the tree after the escape

I was wondering about that myself. I'm wondering if they have spinoffs or prequels in mind. The book on which this movie was based tracked the 1933-34 crime wave, and the concurrent rise of J. Edgar Hoover. The Dillinger gang was only a small part of a story that included Bonnie and Clyde, Floyd, Nelson, Machine Gun Kelley, the Barkers, the Karpis Gang, and several other lesser-known criminals.

It would be interesting to make a series of intersecting movies that ran concurrently ... tracking Bonnie and Clyde, for instance. Depp could cameo as Dillinger in a Karpis movie. It'd be nice to see what came of the train robbery Karpis (Geovanni Ribsi) discussed near the end of this movie.
