I do like option #2 that you posted........how difficult do you think it would be to bend that rod? it is pretty sturdy? How hard do you think it would be to cut it as well?

That seems like it might be the better option, rather than risk bending the legs........what do you think?

See my "Success" post for these answers and more! No "leg bending" necessary. ;)

Here's another option - she's jumping. That's story I tell myself and I have no problem enjoying this amazing piece.

Scott

And thats fine too, but I wanted mine "grounded".

I think i'm going to go to a landscaper and find a real stone base. Drill a hole in the right spot and add a shortened rod.

Are the legs strong enough to hold up its own weight Kaijuboy?

I would HIGHLY recommend AGAINST this. The piece is too heavy to support itself on the four contact legs unless they were wire reinforced on the inside, which there is no way to find out, but I highly doubt. Best case scenario, they would bend with time or crack, both of which are bad... :(

it looks like he's flying lol

Not anymore! Oh, and its a "she"... :naughty

SUCCESS!!!!!!

Okay, after a little bit of work, I present to you the way the Queen Facehugger should have looked all along!

I went with my "option 2" but I didnt want to use the existing rod because:
a) I didnt know exactly what metal it was made of, and some metals dont bend well, they BREAK.
b) If my attempts were unsuccessful, I didnt want to attempt to sell mine WITHOUT its original rod.

Sooo... I used some 3/8 copper tubing cut down to exactly 14cm, with a roughly 12 degree bend (with some slight s-curve correction on top). I also did some painting on it to closer match the base (instead of the original rod's solid black). It held the weight just fine, but I'm reinforcing it by filling its insides with epoxy putty just to be safe. Her legs are all now barely off the base (2mm just to be safe), except for the middle 2 (which are supossed to be "up").

I've included pictures of what it looks like with the original rod and the "new" rod.

I think it turned out FANTASTIC, and the new Rod is much less noticeable as well. No "hovering" Aliens for me! But enough of my talk, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves....

CONGRATS!!

This is most excellent news!!!
I do have one question for you though.....where did you buy the copper rod and how did you bend and cut it to the shape you wanted? I noticed you cut the grooves into the top and bottom of it.

Did a store cut and bend it for you? If not, can you think of some place that might do this?

I really want to do this mod but am not sure how or where to start?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

again, excellent work......simply EXCELLENT!! I wish SSC would have made it like this to begin with :(

kaiju-

you officlally rock!!! i am sorry i ever made any jokes about your rod. ;)

Thanks Boochy! ;) Its a shame my work on the clear ones were in vain. But that's what I get for jumping the gun and not taking into consideration the potential weight distribution. :slap

Thanks for the compliments! And that's a whole lot more than "one question"! :D

Copper Tube was $2.50 ft (smallest length I could find) at Lowes/Home Depot (look in the plumbing area). All of it was cut and grooved by hand using a Dremel (for the love of God, dont forget eye gear!) and bent by hand (use sturdy rounded area like a large PVC pipe, to get a smooth curve). As for a place that might do this, I dont know, but a couple of members on the statueforums have inquired about buying them from me, which I might consider doing.

I'm also surprised why SSC didnt do this. I shouldnt be the one coming up with this kind of correction. Sideshow should hire me for QC/QA :naughty :D

Nice!
thanks for the info :) yeah, it was a little more than one question, LOL hahaha

When I get mine I will consider trying to do this mod as well, however, I dont own a dremel so it will be difficult for me to do so :(

with that said..........I would definitely be interested in buying one from you....

Might not be a bad idea to make these for people :) Im sure a lot of us here and on statueforums would greatly appreciate it.

kaiju-

i would not mind getting one from you if you are making them. might save me the cost of a dremel for the job. just keep us up-to-date. thanks! :D

Ok guys & gals, if anyone wants me to make one of these for your QF, just PM me and I'll make a batch of these in the next week. I'm thinking $20 a pop on these shipped anywhere in the US/Canada or $23 worldwide. Each Rod will be filled and painted and include a 1mm "adjustment pad" (see disclaimer). Please inquire about any special needs/demands/etc.

Disclaimer
As you obviously are not sending me your facehugger (unless thats something you want to do :horror), I will be building these to the specifications that fit my facehugger. My facehuggers legs are comfortably about 2mm off the base, and each rod will be tested to comply with this. In the off chance that for whatever reason your QF's legs are slightly different, you may or may not experience a "touching" leg. This is fine and is unlikey to cause or do any damage as 99% of the weight is still being supported by the rod itself), and an adjustment pad will be included to offset some of these discrepencies. But needless to say, Kaiju Customs is not liable for any lose or damages. Void where prohibited. :D

Hey guys I was just watching the back stage pass video taken at the comic-con on the SS site, and the queen face hugger statue
that was on display is also hovering quite high above the base.
Can anyone confirm if it's actually suposed to be like this????
Or is this indeed a QC stuff up???

Just got mine, really nice piece, scared my wife:horror good:D

She says it is ugly, but I think it is beautiful!!

it sits a little high on the rod, but I may make one, or live with it...not sure....I would get one from kaiju, but $20 is a little steep for a rod for me, sorry:peace

Unfortunetly I had to pack it back up and will go into storage next week until I move into my new house....very scary putting it back....I keep saying I will take pics of the packing to repack it safely, but I get so excited I just take it out as fast as I can....wish SS would have an instruction sheet on their website on how to properly put the statues back in the styrofoam.

No, offense taken ;). And for those wondering:

$2.50. Rod
$3.50. Epoxy filler
$3.00+ shipping

So, I'm cutting, bending, scoring, filling, and painting the rod for roughly $10 a piece. Which is FAR less than I get paid per hour at my "real" job. :D

I know, I am contemplating it, cuz I really don't want to bother with it...just money is tight and dropping this much on the statue, I just can't spend much for a rod right now, but maybe in a couple months if the offer is still good, I may do it, the statue is going to be sitting in the box anyways for awhile,

Well, while working on another project, the thought of touching up the base to give it a little more realism and to give it a touch more color seperation from the facehugger entered my mind, so...

Added some shading to the darker areas, cracks, lightened up some ridges/high-areas, and applied some gloss sparingly to certain areas.

Even took a shot with my Dead Space figure for fun. :D

Thanks for the vid Gorilla, i just received my UPS tracking #. I can't wait. Ended up being $105 shipped to NC
