I'd give the first Nightmare a 7.5, and New Nightmare about a 7 or 6.5.

I must say it's really funny to read about how low or high one would rate something without knowing what rating system he uses.
"I liked it because boobs. They were too small tho... 8/10" vs "What the hell did I just watch??? Nice FX tho... 2/10"

:lol

first NOES, HT should include that to their johnny depp line.

I think all NOES, Friday the 13th and Halloween should just be watched and not rated. I rewatched all of them (yes all) and it was the nostalgia of a different time (before internet/smart phones), that appealed to me.

If anything hands down to NOES and its effects before the days of CG. Very impressive!!

Evil Dead 2: 9/10
Army of Darkness (International Cut): 7/10

I hadn't seen Evil Dead 2 in ages and I forgot how amazing it is. The balance of horror and comedy is perfect, the camera work is so unique (still!), the editing gives the perfect pace to the film, and Bruce Campbell's acting is legendary.

Re Army of Darkness, I didn't enjoy the International cut as much as I would have hoped. I'm not sure if it is simply that the the film's comedy was too much (and in my age it doesn't appeal to as much as it did in 1993), or that the editing of the film was just not as tight as the theatrical. I remember specific moments from the theatrical that just cut better together (e.g. arrival of King Henry's men, arrival of the souped up medieval car). I need to see that version again to see if the film just didn't age well with me, or it is indeed a better cut to the international.

The paranormal activity movies look really bad. I've never watched any of them and don't want to but I'm sure there not as bad as the NOES sequels.

The NOE sequels are goofy, but watchable. You're taking it way too seriously

I don't know how you can come to a conclusion that NOE is worse when you've never seen them. All the PAs are dog ****.

I like the first one but the rest are some of the worst movies ever made IMO.

I think I can apply this to the following series:

Friday the 13th
Jaws
Halloween
Saw
Nightmare on Elm Street
Paranormal Activity
Police Academy

How many others are out there?
There are some exceptions within, but usually when you make a bunch of sequels, they get worse and worse.

But all these started with a great first film.

Absolutely, and even the ones that weren't great were a lot better than their sequels. For the record, I don't think that Jaws 2 and Halloween 2 were terrible movies, just nowhere near the originals. But a lot of the sequel quality drops off FAST.

H2 > Jaws 2. Jaws 2 isn't horrible, but I don't seek it out...
