I think it's a solid 8.

I enjoyed it immensely, but I think a few things took away from the experience. I'm not sure I cared for many of the Radagast moments, or Frodo in the beginning. The "That'll do it" line was stupid.

But other than that, I loved it. I think, maybe, that reading the book prior to watching might be necessary. The wife thought the first half or so was boring, and that seems to be a common complaint... I remember reading here that someone described it as feeling like more of an "extended edition", and I think that's probably spot on.

No one has addressed golf. That took me out of the moment too but it was a funny line. As according to the guy I saw it with, from the book?

Things like that don't bother me. Now if they said something like airplane or car or iPod, that's another story.

I like when Orie said he'd "stick it up his jacksie" though I can't remember exactly what the whole line is. I wondered later if they used that slang back then, but you never know.

I liked it quite a bit but it wasn't a perfect movie.

The different more lighthearted tone was for me, more welcome then the heavier somewhat more adult feeling of the LOTR movies. However, I felt that there wasn't really a purpose to the movie other then deciphering the map and getting out of trouble on their travels, if it had more of a goal for the first movie, I would've liked it more.

It doesn't bother me at all. It just surprised me to hear them reference something like that in a high fantasy setting. It worked within the context of this movie.

Don't be surprised its in the book. I quoted it a few posts back.

It was more of a introduction movie as well. I honestly think this will be the weakest of the three movies. I'm sure we're in for bigger surprises in the next one! :yess:

Ween have you read the book? I can't recall if you've said you had or not. If you haven't read it. I think you'll like it.

If this is the weakest then WOW!...the others must be 10's and 11's

Yes, I've read it. But a movie is different from a book in the sense that it comes alive and your imagination is going to be different than someone else's. Like Jackson's. We're seeing how Jackson pictures it. If that makes sense. And there are surprises, at least to me in it.

As much as I love this one, I'm betting the next one will be even better. SMAUG!!! :panic:

Got ya. I couldn't recall but I knew you knew bits and pieces of the end. I was going to strongly urge you to pick up a copy to read. I'm with ya. This one was fantastic but the next two are going to be even better.

We do a Christmas exchange at work and the person who got my name got me a small, leather bound edition of The Hobbit that looks almost like old bible or a prayer book. I've never see one like that and it's just awesome. I've been looking on the web for it to show you but I can't find it anywhere.

I am way too familiar with the source material but I would give it an A+. It was what I was hoping TPM would have been. Yes, it was slow and seemed less important than LOTR, but in context and when viewed in order 1-6, I think it will rise in people's estimation of it.

The 48 FPS 3D I give an F-.

That's awesome! I think I saw something similar the other day at Barnes and Noble. It looked like a neat little version.

So, will Part II end with
Bard killing Smaug or do you think they will extend Smaug's scenes into Part III?

i believe it will end with Smaugs death and a small scen after. Then I think film 3 will start with events of the arkenstone then work it's way into the battle of the five armies.

Yeah I figured as much.
I hope the battle of the five armies equals/ if not betters The Battle of Pelennor Fields and Helm's Deep.
:rock

As said elsewhere, i highly doubt that
Smaug, the main villain of The Hobbit, will be killed off in the middle film.

Also, i hope Azog isn't seen again until BOFA. I just can't see how he can track the dwarves through Mirkwood and Laketown. A little less Azog until BOFA will do the films good, in my opinion. Leave Smaug as the main villain ;)

Yeah, I don't have a problem with chips or golf whatsoever. Chips were referenced in the first movie, and if you didn't know that "chips" mean french fries in England, well, I don't know what to tell ya. :)

But I suppose I can see the golf thing throwing people off. I liked the reference, since I must have read it in the Hobbit or Appendices or whatever - I knew Tolkien came up with it originally.
