Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

MaulFan's poster plus Dave's caption 'IF YOU HAVEN'T BOUGHT GANDALF YET - WHY NOT?' pretty much says it all. Where are all the customers? On the Aliens/Robot boards people are freakin over the She-Pred (a concept character) and the Lost Pred (about 20 secs of screen time).

We have Gandalf who is in all three movies, based on books which have been around for 50+ years and is probably the influential basis for alot of 'old-man wizard' type characters.... and the exclusive is still available for sale!

I've read all the opinions and reasons that everyone has given but I'm still stupefied as to how this line is 'on-hold' where others are going strong...

I don't get it either. The story is so powerful IMO. There are real lessons you can learn from reading the books or watching the movies.

Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

Got my exclusive yesterday! AMAZING! :rock
Must repaint soon. Will. Must de-Santa him some. But otherwise, GREAT WORK SS!
That hat alone rocks.
At long last, I have a SS LOTR figure myself now! :rock

First of all, I agree that it's kind of hard to understand how this line is doing so poorly. But which other lines are you talking about? The only Sideshow line of 12" figures that really seems to be going strong is Star Wars (and maybe the Dead). I'm trying to think of others. Sure, they have new ones like G.I. Joe but I don't think you can call a line that has two figures announced and none released "strong." I think it's possible that the problems that LOTR is experiencing might be symptomatic of larger problems with Sideshow's 12" figure lines.

Now, Hot Toys lines are of course doing pretty well, but it's hard to make a direct comparison there, partially because of the price difference. And with Predator and other lines they're tapping into an existing fan base that's been starved for quality collectibles, while you could argue that LOTR fans have had quite a bit of stuff released in the last few years (although mostly not in 1/6 scale).

I think that sums up why.

I think overall, film-goers and memorabilia collectors favor films of spectacle more than solid story.

LOTR is full of amazing visuals, but at it's heart is a genuine story with strong morality and life lessons. That and a 3 hour run time can be a turn off for some folks. I have friends I think would enjoy LOTR but haven't seen them because they can't commit to watching a movie for 3 hours.

I love Star Wars more than anything, but compared to LOTR, even Star Wars qualifies as mindless fun and spectacle.

Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

It's pretty sad when people can't commit to watching 3 hours of a truly great epic adventure tale, let alone the time it would take to read the books all the way through. Very sad indeed. :(

Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

Just recieved mine at work. Haven't opened it yet cause I don't want my co-workers to see me playing with my doll,,errr posing my collectible.

To be honest, it was only Star Wars and the HT Preds that I was thinking of at that moment. I just find it difficult to believe there is no fan-base for these figures.

LotR sparked off so much in my opinion: elves, orcs, goblins, dragons.... in my mind LotR is the grandaddy of all 'Dungeons & Dragons-esque' fantasy myth type stuff. Gandalf IS the quintessential wizard of old... long beard, staff, pointy hat... the works! I just thought there would be some 'cross-over' interest from fantasy / sword & sorcery fans in general... but I guess not?

Dave made a good point in that LotR is not big in Asia whereas SW is and it sells... but Gandalf not sold out by now is just wrong. Wrong I tell you!

Ok this is the image thread not the 'lotr on-hold' thread, so I'll shut up (for now) and say great photos all... can't wait to get mine! :wacky

Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

I don't know, I really think it goes back to the type of collector attracted to LOTR. Good, high-quality collectibles all started with the WETA statues and the fan-base built-up around that for several years. The interest in that type of collectible carries over into the dios and PFs more readily than the 1:6. A PF GTG would be more popular than the 1:6 GTG, IMO. I think if Sideshow had started out a 1:6 line at the very beginning, things might have been different.
