Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

I love this figure, period. It really is the pinnacle in LOTR 1/6th scale collectibles.

Besides the feet spinning like propellers and the loose joints elsewhere, there's also the hat which while fantastic looking, is rather heavy. Add to that the heaviness of the bearded sculpt and we've got one very top-heavy figure just ready to take a shelf dive. So be careful, everyone, when posing him sans base.

I'm definitely going to work on getting his staff to light up via a simple wired LED. I think it can be done successfully.

Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

I figured I would display him with the hat, but for now I really love how he looks sans hat so its back in the box. But he really is a figure that you can get a lot of great looks out of :lecture Also noticed that the hands (not sure if its the new material) pop on and off a lot easier than previous figures.

And that is a good point about overseas popularity of LOTR being a factor, hadn't thought about that before, but it doesn't seem to have the same appeal as SW or SciFi films in general.

Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

I think that sums up why.

I think overall, film-goers and memorabilia collectors favor films of spectacle more than solid story.

LOTR is full of amazing visuals, but at it's heart is a genuine story with strong morality and life lessons. That and a 3 hour run time can be a turn off for some folks. I have friends I think would enjoy LOTR but haven't seen them because they can't commit to watching a movie for 3 hours.

I love Star Wars more than anything, but compared to LOTR, even Star Wars qualifies as mindless fun and spectacle.

I agree with ya. People for the most part lack the patience enough to want to watch something they might learn something from. Sad really cause IMO they're missing out on a heck of an experience.

Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

I don't understand that argument. It's not that people don't have the patience to sit through the movies -- the movies did incredibly well at the box office and on DVD. It's just that people for whatever reason aren't feeling the need to buy 12" figures based on the movies.

And I think we then go back full circle to the lack of "baddies", which would have attracted others not necessarily HUGE LOTR fans. Throw in the extremely long dryspells between figures and the bump in pricing, and they all-together hurt the line. There were other factors as well, such as the Faramir Fiasco with the paint apps, but those were not as detrimental to the line as the aforementioned reasons.

Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

OK, simply based on the photos and reviews in this thread, I bought the exclusive while I was at lunch today. I think that's a first for me, but seriously I somehow missed out on seeing this before. As in, I didn't even know this figure had been announced, much less released... I am a very, very bad girl geek, that's what I am! :monkey3 :D This figure is awesome and I can't wait to pose him with Frodo and Sam... classic!! :banana

What about Oluf who did the kick ass Palpatine/Sidious figs - - also one of the greats!

Re: Gandalf the Grey 12" in hand pics !!!

They have a very talented group of sculptors... don't leave out Falls, although I don't think he's sculpting as much these days; but ROTJ Luke is still one of my favorites.
