Best classic style RE is either REmake or 2. I couldn't really choose but I think 2 nearly edges out for its time and what it brought to the series so early on, while REmake is simply a celebration of what made the series what it was and reinventing the original game.

Best modern style RE is easily 4, no question.

which Resident Evil is the best? only played the 1st one back in the days.
For a new comer who wants to get in to Resident Evil as a franchise id say Re 2.
For a new comer who just wants a middle ground game id say Re 4 as its a middle ground between tank controls but 3d gameplay.
For a new comer who wants a modern RE game thats actually good id say Revelations 2.

If i was to answer which is the best resident evils in my own opinion and i wasnt trying to think about it on behalf of what the other person may like and think is accessible to them id say Remake, Resident Evil 2 and Code Veronica. I dont think theres any games in the franchise that can be " play either or ".

But honestly, id say consider investing your time in the franchises early games, Remake,2 3 and Code Veronica. All the original games were hits its only when you get later on in the franchise you need to be wary with games like 5,6 and operation racoon city/umbrella corps ect.

Im summary, play every game except 6.

The franchise is badass.

I don't think Code Veronica is as accessible as those games. It's so poorly designed and bloated. I've debated it, but I think it's the worst of the old school games by a big margin. I hate Zero, since it's REmake Part Deux and the monster designs are so incredibly uninspired... but the idea of playing CV is much better than the actual experience of it. They took too many queues from Dino Crisis and stuck them in there. I don't like the idea of not using pre-rendered backgrounds.

Re2/3 are hands down the best.

Re0 and REmake are the best horror resident evils.

RECV has the best story and cast.

I'm in the middle of an RE3 hard run. I showed my gf and she's enjoying watching me play. I'm at the factory with 3 saves. Granted it's been a while since I ran through this. Should finish it up on Friday.

I think Zero is worse cause of the two characters mechanic, the story making little sense even for the series and being a little non-linear at times along with little replay value in my opinion. But Code Veronica is NOT for newcomers, not at all and I think it's the worst place to start with. I think it's actually aged the worst of the series in terms of gameplay. It's the most linear game, has respawning zombies early on which can screw over newcomers, and is way too difficult at times; the campaign structure was not meant for RE at all and it shows, I don't get why they structured one half with Claire, and then second half with Chris among other things. Visually speaking the cutscenes (pre rendered and in game) look outstanding, but the character models and backgrounds don't hold up well at all, and some oddities like no decapitations make it hard to get into. CV also has a story that's pretty funny at times and unintentionally so.

But both games have a great OST imo, and CV's call backs were nice for what was the 5th anniversary and made some sort of sense.

Zero doesn't even have any clear motivation on what the hell the characters are even striving for. In all of RE1-3, you're clearly trying to escape. In Zero? You're on a train with leeches... then a big house... just doing things. There's literally no plot going on in the game at all.

And that defeats the point of a prequel. It doesn't answer anything outside of what Rebecca went through (which even then is debatable) and how some of Bravo Team vanished/died, plus few things on Wesker/Birkin. Besides that, it only causes more questions at points.

Ok, so with my RE: Code V playthrough, just rescued Claire and very much enjoyed seeing the recreation mansion, Right now, taking a break. Have almost no ammo.....tons of grenade shells but no launcher....

So, just as someone new to the franchise, gotta say the Re-make HD was simply AWESOME. Loved every minute. Went right into the PS1 version (standard) then the Director's Cut. Shorter, but just as good. The live action stuff was so much cheese, but a lot of fun to watch. Voice acting in the original was the same. Awful, but kinda made it that much more endearing in a strange way.

RE2 was a very well done game. Simple story. RE3 was decent, but the constant presence of Nemesis definitely helped. Voice acting in these 2 was much improved.

So far, Code V is 'ok.' Like the Umbrella backstory and Wesker, damn, its hard. lol. Missing some of the atmosphere of the first 3 and Re-make. Did play an hour of Origins before deciding to play them in order. Love the look - very much in the spirit of Re-make I'd say, but I can tell the 2 character switchero is gonna get old

I think CV's story is fine, and is better than a good portion of the series. I just think the game playing like Dino Crisis doesn't work at all for RE. Not to mention, the game world is way too large for that style of gameplay.

This game isn't playing fair. I am suddenly playing again as Chris with no prep time allowed for the first Alexia fight. I have no health and 7 bullets.....first 3 did not pull this stunt.

God I've seen that first Alexia fight catch people off guard and screw them over. Hell the Chris switch is bad in its own right since it means whatever Claire had, it's gone until you regain control of her in the end. If you have the Magnum, you should be good.

At least you were not screwed over by the Steve 'boss fight' or the cannon crusher thing. That **** is almost kazio levels of evil design. I almost get the feeling the game was rushed at times when it comes to Chris's section...strange since RE3 didn't really feel that way.

Most people think the game can screw you over in the first Alexia fight because they panic, but even if you go in to the fight with no healing items and no weapons the game gives you a combat knife which it only takes a few swipes of. A big complaint about that part of the game is people thinking it is a progression blocker and badly designed because if you go in with no weapons its unpassable. But its not, Claire is slimed to the wall specifically so you are forced to go to the item box and get your combat knife, or if you left it in the metal detector at the prison it gives you a new one on the stairs. Either way you get a weapon.

I do get alot of salt when i read people who dislike Code Veronica. Especially when people will arm Chris with like 4 weapons after the first time they die to Alexia and then switch back to Claire complaining " the game has never done that before ! " when it happened twice already in the game by this point.
