Re: Ringwraith on Steed PF..Link to buy in 1st Post.

I've never actually sold a piece of ever plan too, but a friend of mine ran into some financial difficulty recently. He had to sell most of his collection which kept him and his family afloat and fed during his difficult period. He was really blessed that his collectibles allowed him to do that, but before that time the thought of selling his beloved collection never crossed his mind. I guess it's just lucky that he invested in something he loved which still held it's value enough for him to get through that tough time. It sure beats putting your money in stuff you don't believe in or are passionate about as some of these other investments are.

Exactly, you just never know. I've been through many hobbies in my adult life, each one begins with a burning passion but often these passions fade and sometimes you move on entirely. I just think people can be money savvy about all this while enjoying the artistry and keeping it fun.

The whole Collecting vs. Investing debate is a really a fundamental one in this hobby, and one that splits the buying community pretty sharply.

That said, for a company producing this kind of stuff, it's gotta be a very difficult tightrope to walk. I have tons of sympathy for them. Reading the tea leaves has got to be crazy-making.

Their first and foremost concern has to be their own financial survival/success. So, once a product is designed and the production facility is set up, it would stand to reason that they should want to sell as many copies of that product as possible. You'd think that would be as straight forward as it comes. Economy of Scale.

But with this hobby, at a certain point ... that actually becomes a negative. When a large portion of your customer base actually values the scarcity of your products. For any manufacturer, that's pretty counter-intuitive. Especially when that magic number seems to change from piece to piece.

It's gotta drive them crazy behind the scenes at companies like Sideshow, trying to walk that line between volume selling and intentional scarcity. It cannot be an easy thing.

I just finished watching an aragorn ex pf finish at 250 on eBay, didn't meet the reserve. I thought it dissapointing because I own him but also concluded its a great pf IMO and I would never sell anyway. Same thing here, may not go up in value, but I love it!

Please note: I would never buy anything collectible without knowing an es. Coins, vases, original art, unless these r made of gold...ss is best served with some sort of es.

Wow this is the first open edition in the PF line isn't it? That's interesting, Sideshow seems to be shifting their focus from a limited collectibles company to a more mass market approach. Maybe they are targeting future Walmart distribution deals.

I am going to be calling anything that is labeled Limited Edition the " WalMart line ". Genius.

Not really. A few open editions doesn't mean not limited. I know of open editions that have had fewer pieces produced than their numbered counterparts later in that same line. They may never announce how many we're made but as I said to start open doesn't mean not limited.

stormtrooper pf is the first, this is the second.

I wouldn't be shocked if the 3PO and R2 is the third. It seems so classic that they would benefit from having it around for a while.

One thought - on these open or limited pieces, what is the point of the NRD? I see Hulk has one and I'm wondering why they would tie up $65 of your money for 6-7 months when there seems to be zero chance of selling out before release. I guess they really want to get rid of "placeholder preorders" but it also doesn't seem like that would be a severe problem with a "Limited Edition" piece.

Good post Bucky!

The reputation of the company is extremely important as well. Historically, having something a limited edition has always driven sales, spurred impulse buying and increasing the number of iterations and sculpts of a single character pumped out.

If you're worried about something selling out versus not selling out for years, then you can just take your time to buy it since there is no risk of it spiralling out of control pricewise in the secondary market if you miss it.

Secondly, if a product is available for years after release at cost price there is no reason for the company to produce another form or sculpt in the same format of the character. I would love another 1/4 sculpt of a Ringwraith to pair with this. Unfortunately, that would directly compete with a product they still sell so why bother?

Sales of the more obscure characters have also been helped by limited availability since and open edition size will just mean some people will just keep holing off and ultimately never get it.

To me Sideshow rep and history as a limited collectibles company is partially what drives it's sales. Having good sculpts, great QC and customer relations no doubt factor in as well. I think the limited edition model has worked well for them in the past, and there shouldn't be a need to deviate from it. Don't fix what's not broke.

But ultimately, if they set an edition size as limited, they can always produce a new sculpture from that licence in a few years and who among us fans would not want more beautiful sculpts of our favorite characters?

That's very true. Sideshow touted that NRD was to stop flippers and short term buyers but when an item is open edition and available for years it defeats this purpose.

It seem the more insidious and less apparent motive for Sideshow's NRD may come to light. The fact that once they NRD is paid, you can't back out of an order even though it's an open edition without a numbered base.

So they are effectively using the NRD on the open editions against their normal non-flipper customers as a means to penalize them in withdrawing their order in advance.

GUYS! WTF i just went to check my order for my dark rider, clicked on it and its not even exclusive now what is going on i just put 80$ down :( when i ordered it, it sayed exclusive with the sword out what the hell

Re: Ringwraith on Steed PF..Link to buy in 1st Post.

I think they are only selling the Exclusive still. As long as your picture in your order has the little red EX banner in the corner and it is SKU 3000841 you should be fine. The text of the item in my order does not spell out Exclusive, but the pic has the banner and I can't even see a reg edition on the site. Call on Monday if you want to verify.

Re: Ringwraith on Steed PF..Link to buy in 1st Post.

I'd call them on Monday, probably a system issue. The Exclusive is still the only product you can bring up, but your SKU is missing the 1 at the end and everything. I even clicked FlexPay and that made no change on the product page.
