I have to admit that I'm slowly losing interest in this game. So far, a lot of the game footage has shown Lara going all Rambo and shooting up enemies all over the place. I think this game might be going a bit overboard with the shooting/killing of enemies.

The first game also had its shoot-out moments but they weren't very common. I felt like Lara only killed if she really needed to. Now, she is almost like Rambo.

Yeah, it seems the essence of what made this series so beloved in the first place, is falling by the wayside pretty fast. All the gratuitous killing is stupid, as you say - it ain't Lara.

As RIDDICK mentioned earlier, they've basically just lumped this series into the rest of the homogenized violence ridden crud that plebs seem to froth over.

It's a shame.

It could be that they are just highlighting he combat system in these trailers/demo. Taking in context with the full game, it might be just like the previous titles.

How is gratuitous killing not Lara Croft? Are we talking about the same series? :huh

How many people go adventuring with uzis, flamethrowers and grenade launchers? I remember laughing hysterically at dudes arms and legs flying off when you shot them with that thing lol. I even remember the first pic I ever saw of her in pc gamer 100 years ago:

:lol ..

There's obviously a clear distinction between the old games (apart from the obvious next / current gen evolutionary aspects), & this new commando style teen warrior character. Before, it was about exploration, periodically encountering hostile animals & monsters, fighting a human enemy or boss at the end of a level etc.

Now - it's about 'gritty & dark' :)lol) violence as a show piece for the 'new & improved' series, & it's not what the original games were about.

That's what made it lost its' appeal for an old fan like myself. It looks like it's trying too hard to be a "mature Uncharted" of sorts when it should have stuck with their winning formula and made Tomb Raider a smart exploration game as it used to be.

Exactly. I'm actually playing through TR1-5 again as we speak, & I'm adoring them all over again.

Another thing I wanted to mention - & you kinda just touched on this Ryan, is that it's becoming more apparent to me, that a lot of these new gen games that want to be as realistic as possible, just aren't my thing really. That said, I really like TR 2013, but as a stand alone game - not because it's supposedly a 'TR' game.

These new action / adventure / survival / horror type games - to me anyway, are just trying way too hard to be mini movies.. that's where I start losing interest. Games should feel like games, not something that you might as well be watching on TV or in a cinema. No doubt my perspective isn't going to gel with everyone else's, but I've really re-embraced retro gaming these days - as well as some of the newer stuff, but no matter what style or genre the older games are, I genuinely enjoy playing them, & that sense of immersive fun is a big part of that. As much as I love to be challenged, the newer gen games employ the trauma factor, put you through the ringer, & want you to feel like you've been there. That ain't fun to me.

I've always been a Playstation fan, but I don't think I even want a PS4.

That's a spot on assessment and why I haven't been gaming too much these past few years. So many games are gritty third person shooters with hyper realistic graphics and a story where the world's fate hangs in the balance and my God, whatever happened to the simple joy of rescuing the princess or discovering gold? :lol

I think TR2013 if a fine game, and an excellent third person shooter but calling it the best Tomb Raider game (as most people do based on the online polls) is outlandish. I know the old games are hard to get back into but the heart was at the right place. Gimme TR2, Legend, Anniversary and Underworld anyday over the reboot.

True man. Since 2006 or so, the gaming world hasn't quite been the same. Sure, there's been lots of attempts at realistic / dramatic / violent / scary games prior to that, but not at the pace & level that we're seeing become the norm.. it's kinda unsettling in way.

I love the original TR games - love'em. I wouldn't say they're hard to get back into at all, & I'd even go so far as to say that the mechanics & controls are much more free flowing in some ways than the newer ones. I just started TR1 again the other night, & was pleasantly surprised at how great a game it STILL is, never mind Anniversary (which of course is also great).

I guess it's about what you're used to as well. I bought a PS3 in 2013 & it stayed in the box for two years. Finally got it out, & after experiencing some 'next gen'.. went back to my PS1. :lol One of the first things I bought for my PS3 was that Sega Megadrive compilation, & got into that before anything else on that system.

Oh joy, more forced echolocation and QTE! Cannot wait to spend $8 at Steam.
Are you referring to key objectives that magically glow when gritty teen Lara uses her 'intuition' power? :lol

That was actually jarring to me when I saw that the first time.

Have you played the Uncharted games, VintijDroidGutzz? The sad irony is that it started off as a Tomb Raider ripoff but now TR has become an Uncharted clone, only without the charm and humor. :slap

Ughh. I play games on surround sound theater setup and I can't tell you how annoying Lara's Detective Vision sounds. Want to find and object? FHOOOOMMBB!!! My whole living room rumbles. Good lord.

I haven't played any of them yet, but I've seen a bunch of in game footage - & I do own Uncharted 2 on PS3.

I want to get U3 too, but I'm in no hurry. Yeah, I see the parallels for sure. It's interesting, they've just remastered that series, & the 2nd & 3rd are still pretty recent(ish). :monkey1

Somehow it became mandatory to shove such feature in pretty much every modern TP action-adventure VG.
At least in most cases it makes sense, but sometimes you get Lora Cropft or Agent For Tyse Ven.

I'm a headphone user, imagine how I felt after an hour of that FHOOOOMMB. :lol

To be fair though it is an option and doesn't have to be used if we don't want to use it. :)

To be fair Lara goes through more **** then drake does in the first game since she's like 19 and not experienced enough.

I'll agree somewhat there, these new games are darker, but Lara was always a commando and the games were always violent even if the old tech made them somewhat hilarious. Lara is still every bit Lara... cept for those pointy triangles in her shirt lol.

As far as the old games go, they were fun at the time but got old fast. It wasnt exploration so much as it was a clunky platformer puzzle game with killing in between. Tomb Raider was linear and never attempted to be very much about open world exploration even when games like Ocarina of Time were showing everyone how to do it right. Move the block, find the button to the next room, rinse and repeat a couple hundred times is not what I'd call exploration. I enjoyed them for a while but then they just became work. Legend is the last one I played and I could barely get through it. I play games for fun, not to work- I get enough of that in the real world lol

I havent played a lot of Uncharted, the controls felt similar to The Last of Us which I enjoyed. IMO Tomb Raider's controls are much more fluid and responsive. For instance I never had Lara perform a sneak attack and instead stand up to take a bottle off the counter and die while putting every baddy on alert even on restart(thanks Joel). The reboot is still mostly linear but it improves upon the originals making each area much larger and full of things to do- its sort of a series of mini open worlds. Overall the game is much more fluid, moving you along through the plot and giving you incentives to continue. All dark and gritty artistic direction aside and with due respect to the original it is just the better game. I'm happy not to go back :)

Uncharted was really a mix of Tomb Raider, and apparently Gears of War (never really played but I dunno) with a good story, and some great charm/humor. Uncharted held my attention far longer than TR ever did honestly, and I tried both around the same time.
