I'll agree somewhat there, these new games are darker, but Lara was always a commando and the games were always violent even if the old tech made them somewhat hilarious. Lara is still every bit Lara... cept for those pointy triangles in her shirt lol.

As far as the old games go, they were fun at the time but got old fast. It wasnt exploration so much as it was a clunky platformer puzzle game with killing in between. Tomb Raider was linear and never attempted to be very much about open world exploration even when games like Ocarina of Time were showing everyone how to do it right. Move the block, find the button to the next room, rinse and repeat a couple hundred times is not what I'd call exploration. I enjoyed them for a while but then they just became work. Legend is the last one I played and I could barely get through it. I play games for fun, not to work- I get enough of that in the real world lol

I havent played a lot of Uncharted, the controls felt similar to The Last of Us which I enjoyed. IMO Tomb Raider's controls are much more fluid and responsive. For instance I never had Lara perform a sneak attack and instead stand up to take a bottle off the counter and die while putting every baddy on alert even on restart(thanks Joel). The reboot is still mostly linear but it improves upon the originals making each area much larger and full of things to do- its sort of a series of mini open worlds. Overall the game is much more fluid, moving you along through the plot and giving you incentives to continue. All dark and gritty artistic direction aside and with due respect to the original it is just the better game. I'm happy not to go back :)
I think it's fair to say that we agree on some things.

The old games had moments of 'violence', sure.. but in a comic book-y kind of way, not in an 'in your face' blood sweat & tears, painfully grueling kind of way. I concede that yes, OG Lara was armed to the teeth, & that qualifies a certain 'Rambo'-ism correlation to her, but we're talking different ball games here.

The 2013 game isn't really continuing the tradition of what the fans love about the classic games. For starters, they've ****ed with the back story, & given her a make over that really didn't need making over. What I think is funny though is how they really plug the 'realism' thing for the new ones, yet she's managing to endure **** that not even Arnold Schwarzenegger could on a good day. Come on. :lol Current gen demands that the envelope be pushed - fine, of course, but the direction is far more shock & trauma than anything else. THAT.. gets old pretty fast.

As far as your overall assessment of the old games go though, you're obviously not into them.. & that's fine, & oversimplifying / dismissing their content & playability. They're as fun NOW, as they ever were, as far as I'm concerned. :)

The old tomb raider games are awful. That grid based movement was a chore and the shooting was really bad. I'm grateful for the reboot and glad its dark and gritty. If you want light and funny, play uncharted.

LOL yes Lara gets the crap beat out of her. I think for most girls, my male self included, it would have been game over after I fell two stories and impaled myself on a piece of rebar :lol Its hard to say how hardcore they would've gone back in the day if the tech had been better. I do have a vague recollection of code browning myself when a certain TRex came charging at me in the dark out of nowhere... speaking for maybe just myself, I was definitely shocked and traumatized lol

I was into the old games for a time, even got my friends into them. I didn't have a console back then and was jealous of all the 3d titles like Mario 64 so when I saw TR and my family had a pc that would run it I was stoked. TR2 blew me away again, you could actually ride on vehicles! Problem was they were releasing a new game every time you blinked, pushing the innovation with braided flowing ponytails and rounder and rounder ****s. Majora's Mask was a turning point for me, it soured me toward platformers and I realized these games were becoming too much like work. I tried to jump back in with Legend but it was just so tedious. TR pretty much died to me after that, it just never changed. I'm just glad its back, its fun, and its a contender.

Fair enough man. :lol

That's the beauty & charm of the older games though - they're not easy, & I love that! Folks that say lame 'rinse repeat' puzzles & token thrills / action.. either aren't appreciating them as they were intended - & dismissing the value of the actual content, or just aren't their target market. These types of games SHOULD be challenging, not a bunch action sequences with button prompts thrown in - strung together by bloated cut scenes.

New / current gen has a lot to answer for in that regard. :monkey4

naw thats cool. I don't mind a little challenge now and then, just have to watch myself from turning into the german kid on youtube lol. I didn't know I could actually speak German till I played Battletoads :lol My favorite games are the ones that make you have to think- strategy, rpg, open world etc. I can't take mindless repetition, like Gears of War for instance. By work I mean basically either grinding or being forced to use a guide. Still like some old school stuff though, Hard Corps: Uprising was one of my favorite games last gen.

Yeah, it's all about what you're into, & there are lots of popular game series that I have zero interest in. I personally have no time for FPS games, & I don't do the multi player / online thing either. I've got a few RPG type games that I've tried out, but either I'm not grasping the concept of what those games are about properly, or I just can't get into them.. I don't know. :lol

@ VintijDroidGutzz, you really should try out the Uncharted series, more so that all 3 games are now on PS4. It's everything Tomb Raider wants and aspires to be.

I put the classic TR games above Uncharted and I hold Uncharted in higher regard than the new TR games.

As for classic TR games, I wish they'll make a comeback someday as there are way too many me-too generic third person shooters out there and they're all similar one way or another. I'd still long for a sequel to Underworld, the ending was left me wondering what Lara's perceptive on her life would be after the events of that game.

I'll get around to playing the Uncharted series, for sure.

I won't be getting a PS4 anytime soon though (or ever), so I don't think I'll be worrying about the remastered ones. Although that's a great option, it isn't that important to me really.

If anything, I'd LOVE them to remake TR: Angel Of Darkness. I'm playing it on my PS2 at the moment, & it has such potential - & after being out of the loop for ages, I finally see what folks have been saying about all the bugs it has - CRIKEY!! :lol

Yeah, they're amazing regardless of the platform you choose. I'd take them over the TR reboot any day.

I never beat Angle of Darkness because it was too frustrating, but I loved the story that I saw. Wasn't it the conclusion to the PS1 Lara?

It's funny how every "last" Lara Croft game in each incarnation has been overly dark. :lol

Apparently the first Uncharted game on the PS3 shows it's age the most.. but that's cool, I'll probably dig that. :lol

Yeah, AoD is supposed to be a direct sequel to TR4 & 5. The premise is pretty cool, but all the bugs in the game & frustrating mechanics really pull it down. I'm still enjoying it though, & it's a shame that Core was pressed to release it as an unfinished game, ah well.

My PS2.

The controls probably would be better on a PC, but mine's a dinosaur & it would choke on any 'proper' game adding to it's processing load. :lol

Mine should arrive tomorrow. I am looking forward to it since I enjoyed the last game so much.

I do need to give Uncharted a try. I bought a used PS3 earlier this year and picked up the first 3 Uncharted games, but haven't played them yet.
