Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

If it weren't for what came before, TFA would probably rate higher, just that its unoriginality lets it down.
By that you mean OT or PT?

If it wasn't for PT TFA would rate a lot lower, because PT basically lowered down expectations like what 1st Power Rangers movie did for Power Ranger fans. Just look at how well received that ****** trailer is among PR fans.

If it wasn't for OT.... Well, we would not have TFA but we'd probably have better Dune movies, so I don't know what's better.

None of the Star Wars movies are good.

Cool toys tho.

A series of good DUNE films? For that I'd be first in line to burn original Star Wars negatives!

It's the head and neck movement. Legs are about to spring out from underneath.

Dang, I just got done building lego Krennics imperial shuttle, a star destroyer, and was contemplating building a Millenium falcon and afterwards the new Death Star just because OT, but now I'm not so sure, you kills all the hype there is left in me

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

This obsession with tearing specific SW movies apart is foolish.

They're all good. They're all one story and like every story some parts are better than others. You don't read The Grapes of Wrath and say "Pages 37 - 59 are horse****."

TFA is a great film. ROTJ is a great film. ROTS is a great film. SW in its entirety is great.
If grapes of wrath had as many poorly written lines as what's in some of these star wars films, it wouldn't be considered a great book.

The Godfather is a great film...but part 3 is terrible.

Jurassic park 3 is awful despite being a continuation of the story about a lab creating dinosaurs.

Bad movies don't get a pass. The prequels were not made well.

Gungans > Ewoks > orange old CGI yoda lady

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

"Caravan of Courage" is better than "Da Farce Awakens".
"Da Farce Awakens" is better than "The Battle for Endor".

:dunno

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

The biggest problem I had with TFA (other than being a remake) was Chewie's reaction to Han's death. He just saw his life long friend, His mate, The guy he went through so much, die at the hands of his son. And all he does is fire once and leaves town. Srsly. He should have shot that bowgunthingy until it was out of juice.

Why is that Gif reminding me of John Carpenters The Thing?

It's the head and neck movement. Legs are about to spring out from underneath.

Nah he was pissed off that Kylo didn't leave Han's head behind for him to skull **** it.

Then he went back to the rebellion to continue with his ruse.

  • I found Han's bad marriage and death-by-offspring overly cynical.
  • I found Even Bigger Death Star Now With MORE Genocide both cynical and unoriginal.
  • I found Chewbacca's reaction a little underwhelming; you can chalk up his acceptance of Han's death to his warrior ethos, but still.
  • I didn't hate the TFA stormtroopers but they were still just a tad too close to Clone armour.

Everything else -- acting, design, cinematography, was great. While the narrative suffered from a poor superstructure, the single red thread:

"Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence..." -- I found to be quite brilliant in its simplicity.

I find it overall more watchable than ROTJ; although I find TFA is a better (albeit flawed) film, of course it can't compete with the pop-cultural significance of ROTJ. The OT is a thing that pervades culture. A woman at work the other day told me she hadn't seen any Star Wars films but was able to tell me about the Skywalker family.

TFA feels like what it is; a set-up for something bigger. So I'm hoping that Episode 9 pays off. *Edit: I mean Episode 8. Geeze.

The PT feels like a very expensive missed opportunity, but as I've said elsewhere, realistically speaking I'd count myself lucky to fail like that.

I've worked on films and experiencing the process from inside, I find it amazing that anything ever gets made at all, much less good ones.

Little miss perfect escaping with the "help" of James Bond was terrible. Yoda 2.0 and cantina 2.0 are lame as well. CGI emperor 2.0 is also lame. The main villain getting his ass kicked in the first film is also a disappointment. And of course, Han'd rubber body being flushed down the giant space toilet. Goodbye, Han! Even Harvey Dent got a goodbye speech...twice.

BB8 is cute though, and I like Oscar Isaac.
