Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

Ok, you have completely lost me. Why do you hate a movie that you have not even seen and judged for yourself? This is supposed to be a different take on the Star Wars universe and I would think you would want to judge each completed movie on its own merits to see if you like it. Condemning it because of its first trailer makes no logical sense at all. But to each his own. I bought my IMAX tickets!!

Because I can't take this seriously as an actual movie. This is a story that never needed to be told. First and foremost it's a product. It's a product in the way that most movies are these days (building "cinematic universes" instead of just telling original, intriguing stories.) But worse than that, this is an agenda. It's out and out propaganda. It's taking something we all loved from childhood and cramming every last inch of it full of a committee's political views and outlooks.

This movie looks as lifeless, soulless, sterile, and assembled by number as TFA. And the horrible acting, dialogue, and tired story tropes evident in just the trailers alone was insulting.

Movies are getting dumber and dumber every year. They need to be easy to understand to appeal to larger and larger foreign markets. Movies were already pretty damn dumb, but now it's getting to a whole new level.

"But this movie has x-wings and TIE fighters!" So do Star Wars video games. Is that really all it takes to be willing to spend the $20 and sit there for two hours? A few scenes of some cgi x-wings zipping around?

Do you really think you're going to emotionally connect with Jyn Erso any more than you did with the two dimensional stiffs in the prequels?

"Oh she's rubbing the necklace her dead mom gave her and looking off wistfully in the distance...she's so lonely and tragic...but she's also such a badass!! I can really relate to her!"

I'm sure you'll all go and see this movie anyway, despite the lazy script and lifeless characters. It's going to have a hard time not making a billion dollars worldwide. And that's fine, if it makes you happy, do it. But I'm personally saving my money for films that reflect an artist's vision, not the whims of marketing departments, parents group, diversity committees, and most of all Kathleen Kennedy's personal crusade to "fix" the Star Wars brand.

While your not wrong it's the current cinematic landscape...... Whaddyado boycott everything.

Does Batman's story really need retelling every few years?

Queue my buddy Spindrift :)

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

One could say that of all the Star Wars films. And most if not all of entertainment.

Does Batman's story really need retelling every few years?

Absolutely!

Apparently Otomofan has seen the movie already.

If you think movies are getting dumber and dumber every year, you haven't had to sit through many movies from the 80's.

Actually, yes. I don't consider it a boycott really, but I don't support stuff with my money if I think it's dumb, a waste of time, or insulting to my intelligence. I only see maybe 1 or 2 movies a year in the theater. But I'm just one person. It doesn't make any difference.

Haven't you ever had a moment like that episode of the Simpsons where Homer got really smart, and he went to a movie and everyone in the audience was braying like jackasses at hackneyed one-liners, and he sat there thinking, "this isn't funny, why are they laughing?"

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

I have that experience in most Marvel movies.

That said, didn't Homer go back to being one of those happy, laughing jackasses in the end?

Right on! I won't waste two hours of my time watching crap that I know going in is crap- I'm more selective- give me a smart, original film and you have my attention. These days 90% of these mass-appeal product films are pretty bad. They can be much more - but Disney is making these paint-by-number demographic exercises

Exactly- which is why clearly stuff like the original IM film is better than almost everything we have seen since...

So just out of curiosity what is the last movie you did see because I don't think anything has fit that mold in about 20 years.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

I saw "The Hateful Eight." Tarantino is one of my all time favorites, even though he can be hit and miss. I enjoyed The Hateful Eight. I really loved Django. I thought Inglorious Basterds was terribly disappointing.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

When the 1960's batman series came on tv, even if it was aimed for kids, the very first episode straight up showed a character without a backstory that only tv characters show. I hate backstories in this day and age. 75% of movie is wasted on it

So this is what the fabled Nerd Virgins looks like. I thought their kind was all but extinct.

Yup, well said. It's what a lot of us are thinking but won't really go into lengthy details about without feeling ostracized. You nailed it perfectly with nice, eloquent post. People will diss you, call you cynical but **** em', you're right.

I didn't really think anything of it and just considered this another stupid movie . . . until both writers and the producer herself came forward and blatantly confirmed the assumptions most people already had about the crap they're trying to push. It was nice of them to give confirmation of what they're doing without having to be labeled a conspiracy theorist or whatever, so that was nice of them.

Still, I'm curious how they're going to handle Vader and Tarkin since I love those two characters. Then again, those two elements are probably only in there for a bit just to reel in folks like me. :lol

I think if the movie is made well then yes we can connect with Jyn and the other characters. Family Guy made a really funny joke in their ANH parody about believing in the Force after meeting someone just a few hours before and then criticizing Han for not being a believer.

The point is that if ANH is the base film that all others are judged from, then yes we can fall in love with characters after only a few scenes if the story overall is great and the movie is well made. A great comparison is the difference between the deaths of the Rebel pilots attacking the Death Star and the Naboo fighters in TPM. Even though Perkins only had less then two minutes of screen time, we still felt the pain of his death because the way the movie and script brought everything together to that emotional moment. TMP was just a mess. Bad script. Bad characters. And just plain boring. So no we did not feel or care when those secondary characters died.

So now we have Rogue One. Again if the script is good and the movie is well made, then yes we should end up caring for all the Rebels and actually feel something when and if they die. The same for Jyn. It all depends on the story and the characters coming to life in a great movie.

Just 12 more days and we will know if its great or not, but it's definitely worth the price of admission to find out.

Just my two cents.

MTFBWY and LLAP and Take Care,

Rick
