Edwards discussed the film's dramatic conclusion on the Empire Podcast (via Heroic Hollywood), shedding light on the bold decision to kill off every member of the Rogue One crew. "I think there was an early version - the very first version they didn’t [die] in the screenplay," he revealed, noting they all initially assumed the studio wouldn't allow them to kill off the entire team of heroes.

As such, they tried to create a story where not everyone died. "So we're trying to figure out how this ends where that doesn't happen," Edwards explained. "And then everyone read that, and there was just this feeling of like, 'They gotta die right?' And everyone was like, 'Yeah, can we?.'"

So they consulted Lucasfilm and Disney, and were given the green light to conclude the film with a tragic end for every member of Rogue One. "Kathy [Kennedy] and everyone at Disney were like, 'Yeah, makes sense,'" Edwards said, highlighting the fact that no member of the Rogue One team appears in subsequent Star Wars films.

Despite being given the go-ahead, the director was still anticipating that someone above would request they save at least a member or two of Rogue One. "I kept waiting for someone to go, 'You know what, can you just film an extra scene where we see Jyn and Cassian, they're okay, and they're on another planet and la la la…' And [that] never ever came, and no one gave us that note so we got to do it," Edwards concluded.

Rogue One director Gareth Edwards went through a lot effort to include two particular cameos in the film.

In the new film, Garven Dreis/Red Leader (the late Drewe Henley) and Jon Vander/Gold Leader (Angus MacInnes) show up looking exactly like they did nearly 40 years ago in the original Star Wars. While speaking to RadioTimes, Edwards revealed that he was able to pull these scenes off by finding unused footage from Star Wars discovered in the archives at Skywalker Ranch.

Explained Edwards, "We’re walking around, and doing all the cool things and looking at the Millennium Falcon and trying on Han Solo’s jacket and things like that, in the back at the bottom was all these cans of film. And we said ‘what are they?’ and they said ‘Oh, it’s Star Wars.’"

After being told no one had really looked through this footage and it wasn't fully digitized, Edwards was given access to the negatives, which opened the door to incorporate the footage into Rogue One. Ultimately, Edwards was able to include unused moments and dialogue from the Death Star assault at the end of A New Hope and integrate them into Rogue One's big space battle, giving both MacInnes (whose more recent credits include Vikings and Captain Phillips) and Henley, who passed away earlier this year, surprise returns to the Star Wars series.

“Through the magic of ILM [special effect studio Industrial Light and Magic] they cut round them and manipulated them and stuck them into our cockpits,” Edwards told RadioTimes.

Edwards admitted he had doubts about whether this was worth the time, and if audiences would even notice or care. But during Rogue One's LA premiere, the director explained that once Red and Gold Leader showed up, they were met with huge cheers.

“It was the only time during the premiere where I actually punched the air," Edwards said.

I didn't even know there was going to be a space battle (figured all the action would be on the beach) let alone that I'd be seeing Red and Gold Leader in action again. That was off the charts.

The space battle made it Star Wars for me. One knock on the film was always that it was too human centric, but having that space battle was great, so I'm glad it was included (they showed the X-wings on Galen's planet, but that was it, right?). I thought the final battle was maybe too busy at times, and the hammerhead was unnecessary, but it was still excellent and that always feels vital in a SW flick.

I'm not sure I believe that. There was a story on the Hollywood Reporter this weekend about the film's salaries, and it mentions that Felicity Jones was not only the highest paid actor and the only one to get a seven figure paycheck, but she was the only one to sign a multi picture deal, meaning she is the only one in the cast that has the option to come back for another film if Disney wants or needs her in another film. So either they HAD plans for her to survive and come back in some other film before the "infamous" reshoots or the plan was for her to die and she still will be back in some other way in an upcoming film.

I wouldn't be surprised if the infamous "reshoots" were deaths of the remaining characters who survived the first go around. I believe they said the reshoots were to add some extra emotion, and deciding to go for broke and kill everyone off would have certainly been in line with that desire.

I can't imagine that Disney will exercise the option to have Felicity reappear given how the final film turned out.

Force ghost ( we find out she was jedi all along)

Well we know she originally left the Imperial base (along with Captain Andor) and is seen running on the beach and shore against opposing AT-ACTs with the death star plans in hand. Who knows how the climax originally went down.

Maybe in another Star Wars story that takes place before RO. I can't imagine her showing up in some kind of flashback scene in the Skywalker series. That might be weird.

I'm glad your waiting payed off bud! this is how SW should be.

Imagine a Fett flick with this tone and gritty-ness. Hiding from gangsters, assassinations on Coracent. etc. He needs his own flick.

No doubt. In the timeline, it should be after his father's death. Maybe the intro can show a little of his childhood, leading up to his father's death, because we need to see what fuels his hatred towards Jedis. Then the bulk of the movie takes place after. I'm with you Zach. Boba needs a movie.

And then Trailer #2 had that TIE Fighter hovering at the end of the catwalk she was on. Who knows, maybe Bodhi originally survived and was her getaway driver. Clearly some major elements of the finale were changed.

Re: Rogue one: Spoilers confirmed! You are warned do no read these are real

That would be great.. It could be about how Brody kicked ass as a member of the NYPD and how he met Ellen. How kicking so much ass got exhausting and he went to Amity because one man can make a difference... All the while Bruce is trying to quite eating Fish by becoming friends with a clown Fish and deciding to take up eating humans instead off a small little island... Thus a great confrontation begins.

The only Jaws sequel we ever need is the story of the Indianapolis...

If they do a Boba Fett film they could have it take place over the course of his entire career. It could be his Moby D-ck story about the ultimate hunt that keeps getting away. The one he wants enough to risk death for.

Much of the film takes place in the years leading up to the OT without overplaying the historical markers. Then we meet Fett years later after the Sarlac left a few scars, almost Mythos styled.

Armor, weapons, marking always evolving.

Make it feel a bit like a Sergio Leone film.

Yeah, Disney is like the Bible, incredibly violent and yet totally acceptable for kids. :lol

She looked better in action.

I widened her face and color adjusted slightly. I think this helps fix the gaunt appearance. The lips still need work, esp. when she speaks.
